- Description: Basedash started as an admin panel for non-technical teams to manage databases. It has since pivoted to an AI-native BI platform with natural language querying, dashboards, and automations. The pivot is credible — but the $1,000/month entry price for small teams is a genuine barrier.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Basedash has reinvented itself from a database admin panel into a credible AI-native BI platform. The natural language querying is genuinely useful, the governance model is thoughtful, and SOC 2 Type II compliance with self-hosting options addresses real enterprise requirements. The catch: at USD $1,000/month (approximately AUD $1,400 excluding GST) for the Startup plan, it is not cheap for 25 seats. Worth evaluating for data-forward Australian teams that want dashboards and AI analysis without hiring a dedicated data engineer — but check whether the AI usage credit system adds cost before committing.

## What Basedash is

Basedash originally launched as a no-code admin panel: connect your database and manage records through a clean UI, no SQL required. Teams used it to let customer support agents update user records, product managers query data, or operations teams manage back-end data without developer involvement.

At some point in 2024–2025, Basedash pivoted. It dropped the admin panel framing (and the free tier) and rebuilt itself as an AI-native business intelligence platform. The current product is more ambitious: connect your databases and data warehouses, ask questions in plain English, generate dashboards, set up automated data briefings, and share governed metrics across your team.

This is not a rebrand with new packaging. The product has genuinely changed. The admin panel still exists as a legacy product (the old app at app.basedash.com remains accessible), but the current Basedash — marketed at charts.basedash.com — is an analytics platform with AI at its core.

**Key capabilities (current product):**

- **AI data analyst** — ask questions in natural language, get SQL generated from your governed schema, and results returned as charts or data tables. The AI uses your defined business terms and column descriptions, not freeform hallucination.
- **Dashboards** — build and share visual reports from AI queries or manually defined charts.
- **Semantic layer** — define what "active user," "MRR," or "churn" means once, and every query uses the same definition. This is a meaningful governance feature.
- **Automated Insights** — AI-generated daily data briefings, surfaced to Slack or email.
- **Automations** — trigger workflows based on data conditions.
- **MCP server** — connect any AI client (Claude, ChatGPT) to your data via Basedash's MCP integration.
- **750-plus integrations** — PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Salesforce, HubSpot, Stripe, and many others.

Self-hosting is available for teams with compliance or network requirements, via Docker, Kubernetes, or Helm.

## What it costs in Australia

Pricing is confirmed directly from the Basedash pricing page (verified 26 June 2026; re-read in a browser 30 September 2026):

- **Startup plan:** USD $1,000/month. Up to 25 users. USD $1,000/month AI credits included. Additional AI usage billed on top.
- **Enterprise plan:** Custom pricing. Unlimited seats. Self-hosting, SSO (SAML and OIDC), SCIM, embedding, custom AI models.
- **Free trial:** 14 days, no credit card required, full feature access.

**Australian price estimates (indicative, not confirmed by vendor):**

| Plan | USD/month | AUD/month (excl. GST) |
| ---------- | --------- | --------------------- |
| Startup | $1,000 | \~$1,400 (estimate) |
| Enterprise | Custom | — |

The USD $1,000/month of AI credits included in the Startup plan covers "most AI actions" — generating dashboards, asking questions in chat, running analyses. If your team generates high query volumes, you will incur overage charges. Basedash's billing section tracks usage, but this is worth monitoring closely in the first month.

All pricing is in USD. There is no AUD billing option. GST is not disclosed by the vendor — standard for US SaaS at this tier, but confirm with your accountant.

A 14-day free trial with full feature access is a meaningful commitment: you can test whether the AI query quality is sufficient for your data before paying.

## How it works in practice

You connect Basedash to your data sources — a PostgreSQL database, a Snowflake warehouse, a Stripe account — and it ingests the schema. You then build a semantic layer: define your tables' business terms, add column descriptions, and set up governed metrics.

Once that foundation exists, the AI analyst works well. You type "what was our MRR last month by customer segment" and Basedash generates the SQL, validates it against your schema, runs it, and returns a chart. The SQL is visible and re-runnable, which means you are not trusting a black box — you can verify every answer.

The quality of answers depends heavily on how well you have documented your semantic layer. A database with no column descriptions or business term definitions will return more generic and less accurate results. Investment in governance upfront pays dividends in query quality.

Dashboards are built from query results — either AI-generated or manually defined. They are shareable, permissioned by role, and update as the underlying data changes. The Insights feature proactively surfaces anomalies and trends via Slack without anyone having to ask the right question.

For teams already using Claude Code or other AI clients, the MCP server integration is interesting: it allows your AI assistant to query your Basedash data directly during a conversation, which collapses the gap between asking a business question in chat and getting a verified data answer.

---

## What it does well

**Governed natural language querying.** This is the product's best feature. Defining what "active user" means once and having every query respect that definition solves a real problem in organisations where different teams answer the same question differently. The semantic layer is not just a chatbot feature — it is a governance tool.

**Self-hosting option.** SOC 2 Type II compliance plus self-hosting via Docker or Kubernetes means Australian enterprise and regulated-industry teams can keep data inside their own perimeter. This is a significant differentiator in the Australian market, where Privacy Act compliance and data sovereignty are genuine concerns.

**MCP server integration.** Connecting Claude or another AI client directly to your Basedash data is a practical capability for teams already running agentic AI workflows. No other tool in this review batch offers this.

**14-day free trial with full access.** No credit card required to evaluate. The pivot to AI BI means the product is genuinely different from what many teams may have heard about Basedash previously — the trial is the right way to form a current view.

**Security posture.** SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA support, SSO (SAML and OIDC), SCIM, RBAC, row-level security, and audit logs. AI never trains on your data. This is enterprise-grade, not bolted on.

---

## What it doesn't do well

**The pivot is not fully communicated.** Basedash markets itself as a BI platform now, but many people searching for it still expect the admin panel product. The legacy app.basedash.com product still exists, creating two Basedash products with overlapping branding. This is confusing.

**USD $1,000/month for 25 users is a steep floor.** At AUD \~$1,550 per month before GST, this positions Basedash above Metabase's open-source free tier, above Hex's entry price, and comparable to mid-market BI tools with much longer track records. For a startup with 10 people who want AI BI, this requires clear ROI justification.

**AI usage credits add unpredictability.** The USD $1,000/month of included AI credits is a generous allowance, but Basedash does not say how far it goes. High-query-volume teams could find themselves paying overages in the first month. The pricing FAQ describes monitoring in the Billing section but does not publish a per-query rate.

**No Australian data region confirmed.** Basedash's cloud infrastructure is not confirmed to include an Australian region (check with Basedash regarding cloud region and data processing locations). For teams not self-hosting, data is likely processed in US-based infrastructure. The Privacy Act implications apply: cross-border disclosure of personal information from Australian databases to a cloud service without an Australian region requires assessment. The self-hosting option resolves this, but adds operational overhead.

**The admin panel use case is now secondary.** Teams that wanted Basedash to let customer support agents edit database records will find the current product is oriented around analytics and querying, not operational data management. That use case still exists in the legacy product, but it is no longer where development focus sits.

## Australian fit

| Question | Answer |
| ------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| AUD pricing? | No — USD only |
| Australian data region (cloud)? | Not confirmed (unconfirmed) |
| Self-hosting in Australia? | Yes — Docker/Kubernetes on AU infrastructure |
| GST disclosed? | No |
| Privacy Act considerations? | Depends on deployment; self-hosting resolves most concerns |
| SOC 2 Type II? | Yes |
| HIPAA? | Yes |

Basedash's self-hosting option is the strongest Australian answer here. If you deploy Basedash on-premises or in an Australian cloud region, your data does not leave Australia — and the SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, and DPA documentation gives your legal team something to work with. This is meaningful for Australian healthcare, finance, and legal businesses that handle sensitive client data.

For cloud-hosted deployment, the absence of a confirmed Australian region is a concern that requires legal assessment before processing Australian personal information through the platform.

## Alternatives

- [**Hex**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-hex-australia-2026/) — collaborative SQL notebook and AI analytics. Similar AI-query positioning, comparable pricing for teams that need collaboration. Strong for technical data teams.
- [**ThoughtSpot**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-thoughtspot-australia-2026/) — enterprise natural language BI with longer track record, more enterprise deployment options. Significantly more expensive.
- [**Metabase**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/metabase-review-australia/) — open-source BI that can be self-hosted for free, with a cloud option. Less AI-native but more established for SMB database querying and dashboarding.

---

## Bottom line

Basedash has made a credible pivot from admin panel to AI-native BI. The governed natural language querying, semantic layer, and self-hosting option are genuine product strengths. The MCP server integration for AI clients is forward-thinking.

The barriers for Australian teams are pricing (USD $1,000/month is not trivial) and the uncertainty around cloud data region. If you are a data-forward team of 10–25 who can justify the price and are willing to either self-host or accept the cloud data region question, Basedash is worth a serious 14-day trial. If you need something cheaper to start with, Metabase's open-source version is the benchmark.

Update history
- **9 Oct 2026** — Housekeeping: replaced internal editing references in this history with plain wording. No fact, price or score changed.
- **30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; the price holds, the included AI credits are ten times what we said.** `basedash.com/pricing` on an Australian connection: Startup is still **$1,000 a month plus AI usage** for up to 25 users, Enterprise custom, 14-day free trial with no card. But the plan card and the pricing FAQ both say the Startup plan includes **$1,000 a month in AI credits**; this review said US$100\. Corrected in the pricing section, the weakness on AI usage and the pricing FAQ (body and schema), where a garbled GST sentence was also repaired. Bare `$`, no `A$`. `aud_native: false` already set. Score unchanged: the larger allowance eases the overage worry, but Basedash still publishes no per-query rate. - **24 Sep 2026** — **The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table.** The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. The ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule — the column headed *“AUD/month (incl. GST est.)”*: Startup **\~$1,540 (estimate)**. `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does Basedash cost in Australia?

Basedash's Startup plan costs USD $1,000 per month for up to 25 users, including USD $1,000/month in AI usage credits. At the \~1.40 AUD/USD exchange rate, that is approximately AUD $1,400/month excluding GST (a GST-registered business quoting its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers add \~10%). All pricing is in USD — there is no AUD billing option. Enterprise pricing is custom. A 14-day free trial with no credit card is available.

### Is Basedash still an admin panel or has it changed?

Basedash has pivoted from a database admin panel to an AI-native business intelligence platform. The current product — accessed at charts.basedash.com — focuses on natural language querying, dashboards, AI-generated insights, automations, and a semantic layer for governed metrics. A legacy admin panel product still exists at app.basedash.com, but active development is now focused on the BI platform.

### Can Basedash be self-hosted in Australia?

Yes. Basedash offers self-hosting via Docker, Kubernetes, or Helm, available on the Enterprise plan. Self-hosting on Australian cloud infrastructure (such as AWS Sydney or Azure Australia East) means your data does not leave Australia, which is the strongest data sovereignty answer available. The cloud-hosted version does not have a confirmed Australian data region, which creates Privacy Act considerations for Australian customer data.
