Head-to-head verdict

[**20**/25QuickBooks](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/quickbooks-review-australia-2026/)[**20**/25MYOBWinner](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/myob-review-australia-2026/)

**Our pick: MYOB.** The verdict below says who should buy the other.

> **Winner: MYOB** for most Australian small businesses — the strongest local fit in the category, GST-inclusive AUD pricing, and genuinely local 24/7 support you can phone. **Pick QuickBooks** if AI automation is your priority and you want the most hands-off bookkeeping money can buy — just price it on the standard rate, not the promo.

This is a closer fight than the scoreboard suggests. Both QuickBooks and MYOB land on 20/25 in our reviews, both price in Australian dollars, and both lodge GST, BAS and Single Touch Payroll straight to the ATO. The tie breaks on two things: QuickBooks has the deeper, more complete AI; MYOB has the better Australian fit and the local-incumbent confidence that comes with it. For a time-poor owner the decision is genuinely about what you weight more — automation, or local grounding.

## What both tools actually do

Both are cloud accounting platforms for the everyday Australian business: send invoices and quotes, capture and pay bills, reconcile the bank feed, track and lodge GST and BAS, run payroll with Single Touch Payroll to the ATO, and produce real-time reports. For a non-technical owner, the day-to-day grind — code the transactions, match them off, watch the GST figure build — is broadly the same on either.

The 2026 difference is how far the AI goes. **QuickBooks** brought Intuit's full "virtual team of AI agents" — branded "Intuit Intelligence" in the AU product — live here in November 2025: an Accounting agent that categorises transactions and flags anomalies, a Finance agent that writes your P&L and cash-flow summaries, Customer and Project agents, and a GST agent (still in beta) that sense-checks your BAS. **MYOB** has built AI into the ledger too — AI BAS, Smart Reconciliation, AI Business Insights and Smart Invoice Reminders — but most of it still carries a Beta tag. Both are genuinely useful, and both should be treated as a sharp junior, not an autopilot: the work lands in a feed for you to review and approve before anything reaches the ATO.

## Pricing in Australia

Both bill in AUD, so there's no FX markup and no conversion games — a real advantage over the USD-only tools your accountant otherwise has to reconcile by hand. The catch on both is the same: the headline number is a teaser, and the running cost is the standard rate.

**MYOB is cheaper to start, especially for the smallest operators.** Solo runs $99/year — about $8.25/month, GST inclusive — for a mobile-first sole-trader plan with in-built AI and unlimited invoices (it tracks GST but doesn't lodge BAS). Lite is $315/year (\~$26.25/month) and adds BAS lodgement, inventory and a payroll add-on. The workhorse Pro plan is $70/month standard (advertised at $21/month for the first six), and payroll on Lite and Pro is a $3-per-employee, per-month add-on — so a Pro business paying five staff is really $85/month plus GST. AccountRight Plus ($165/mo) and Premier ($210/mo) fold unlimited payroll into the price. MYOB's standard figures were unchanged on its pricing page as of 18 June 2026.

**QuickBooks prices in four self-serve tiers, and pushes hard on a rotating promo.** Simple Start is $33/month RRP, Essentials $60, Plus $84, and Advanced $125 — all native AUD, read from Intuit's own AU pricing page on 5 and 8 October 2026\. Intuit's page does not say whether these include GST, so check the total at checkout. New customers are steered toward an aggressive discount: the pricing page runs "70% off for 6 months" ($9.90/month for Simple Start, $25.20 for Plus, $37.50 for Advanced), and at our first review the homepage banner advertised "90% off for 3 months." The exact offer rotates — confirm the current discount on the [QuickBooks AU pricing page](https://quickbooks.intuit.com/au/pricing/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) before you buy. Whatever the banner says, budget against the RRP, which applies from month seven, and remember **payroll is a paid add-on on top** on both platforms.

On sticker price for a sole trader, MYOB's $99/year Solo undercuts everything QuickBooks offers once the promo lapses. At the small-team end, the two sit in the same band. At the top, QuickBooks Advanced ($125) is the cheaper sticker against AccountRight Premier ($210), though Premier folds in unlimited payroll and QuickBooks bills payroll on top. So price the landed cost (subscription RRP plus payroll plus add-ons) for your actual staff count, and compare that, not the headline.

## Where QuickBooks wins

- **The AI is deeper and more complete.** This is QuickBooks' single biggest edge. The full agent suite is live in Australia today — Accounting (categorisation plus anomaly detection), Finance (plain-English P&L and cash-flow summaries), Customer and Project agents — scoring a full 5/5 on Feature Depth against MYOB's 4/5\. If you want the most hands-off bookkeeping on the market, this is it.
- **Anomaly detection earns its keep.** The Accounting agent doesn't just suggest categories; it flags things that look wrong in your books, ready for review. For anyone who dreads reconciliation, that's the feature that pays for the subscription.
- **A light CRM layer built in.** The Customer agent works your inbox for leads, prioritises them and drafts responses — useful for a business that doesn't run a separate CRM. MYOB has no equivalent.
- **Mature, well-resourced vendor.** Intuit is a large global fintech with SOC 2, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS — the platform will keep being improved, and Intuit ships fast.

## Where MYOB wins

- **The strongest Australian fit in the category, full stop.** MYOB scores a clean 5/5 on Australian Fit to QuickBooks' 3/5\. It's an Australian company (MYOB Australia Pty Ltd) with a product built around our GST, the ATO and Australian payroll law — AUD pricing inclusive of GST, ATO-native STP (including Phase 2), BAS and automated super. This is the decisive gap.
- **Genuinely local 24/7 support — including chat on every plan.** MYOB offers round-the-clock AU-based support on all MYOB Business plans, plus priority support on AccountRight. QuickBooks' AU support is good but business-hours only (Mon–Fri, 8:30 AM–6:30 PM AEST) — when your BAS is due at 11pm, that difference matters.
- **GST-inclusive pricing and a compliant tax invoice.** Every MYOB price is shown inclusive of GST with a proper AU tax invoice carrying its ABN — no mental arithmetic for your accountant.
- **It pays to switch you over.** MYOB will cover the cost (via its partner) of migrating current and prior financial-year data from Reckon, QuickBooks or Xero.
- **Payroll can be cheaper at headcount.** AccountRight Plus folds unlimited payroll into its price, which can make the pricier-looking plan the cheaper one once you have real staff.

## Australian fit: 5/5 vs 3/5 — and why it's decisive

This is where the two part company. **MYOB scores 5/5** — an Australian entity, AUD GST-inclusive pricing, ATO-native STP/BAS/super, and local 24/7 support. The only marks against it are that it doesn't publish an explicit data-residency location or a named IRAP assessment (though it is ISO 27001 certified — certificate 1103-I-2 — and PCI DSS compliant; you just have to dig into the Trust Centre to confirm it).

**QuickBooks scores 3/5.** The localisation is real and better than most US tools we review — native AUD pricing, GST tracking, BAS e-lodgement straight to the ATO, and an AU support line — but it's held back by three things: Intuit publishes no Australia-specific data-residency commitment (the only public statement is a general US one about home-country AWS hosting), it holds no IRAP, and its GST agent is still in beta. For a data-sovereignty-sensitive buyer, or anyone in a regulated or government-adjacent sector, that's a meaningful gap.

This matters beyond the star count. Under our editorial gate, a tool needs an Australian Fit of at least 4/5 to be named a category Top Pick. QuickBooks scores 3/5 — so even though it wins outright on AI capability (Feature Depth 5/5), **it cannot be the category winner for Australians.** It can absolutely be recommended, and for the right buyer it's the better tool — but the category crown goes to MYOB on local fit. ([Methodology](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/).)

*This comparison is general information, not financial, tax or accounting advice. Neither QuickBooks nor MYOB replaces a registered tax or BAS agent — you remain responsible for the accuracy of your books and anything you lodge with the ATO. Confirm the treatment for your circumstances with your registered agent.*

**Tax Practitioners Board guidance (final, 22 July 2026).** If a registered tax or BAS agent runs either tool's AI features on your file, the TPB's Guidance Statement TPB(GS) 55/2026 applies to the agent, not the software: they stay accountable for the accuracy of every output, must exercise their own judgement rather than rely on the AI, and must not put your information into an AI model without your permission and a clear answer on where the data is stored. Nothing here changes those obligations — and none of it replaces advice from a registered practitioner. ## Which to pick — decision framework

- **You're a sole trader or micro-business watching every dollar** → **MYOB**. Solo at $99/year is the cheapest credible option, and you get local support.
- **You want the most hands-off bookkeeping you can buy** → **QuickBooks**. The fuller AI agent suite — categorisation, anomaly detection, finance summaries, a light CRM — removes the most manual work today.
- **You run a regulated business, or onshore data confidence matters** → **MYOB**. It's an Australian company; QuickBooks publishes no AU data-residency commitment and holds no IRAP.
- **You want a local company you can phone or chat to at 2am** → **MYOB**. 24/7 AU support on every plan beats QuickBooks' business-hours line.
- **You're a bookkeeper or BAS agent running multiple client files and want automation first** → **QuickBooks**, with the caveat that you keep the human sign-off on every BAS.
- **You just want the safest, most defensibly local default** → **MYOB**.

## The verdict

**Winner: MYOB, for most Australian small businesses.** Both tools score 20/25, so this isn't decided on raw capability — it's decided on fit. MYOB is the deeply Australian choice: 5/5 on Australian Fit, GST-inclusive AUD pricing, ATO-native compliance, and local 24/7 support you can actually reach. Its AI is real and aimed at the right chores (BAS prep, reconciliation, chasing late invoices), even if most of it is still Beta. For the everyday owner who wants their compliance handled locally and correctly, it's the low-regret pick — and the only one of the two that clears our Top Pick gate.

**But QuickBooks is the better buy for a specific, growing group:** automation-first owners and the bookkeepers who service multiple clients. Its AI is genuinely deeper — a full agent suite live in Australia, scoring 5/5 on Feature Depth where MYOB scores 4/5 — and the anomaly detection alone can save real hours. It's let down for Australians by the data-residency and IRAP gaps and a still-beta GST agent, which is exactly why it scores 3/5 on local fit and can't take the category crown. If those gaps don't bind on you and automation is the prize, buy QuickBooks — just price it on the RRP, not the promo, and treat every AI output as a draft you approve before it reaches the ATO.

The honest truth: both are strong, both are far more localised than most software Australians get handed, and either will serve you well. Pick MYOB for local grounding and support; pick QuickBooks for the deepest automation. At 20/25 apiece, neither is "better" — they're better at different things.

Update history
- **8 Oct 2026:** New edition, synced to the [8 Oct 2026 QuickBooks review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/quickbooks-review-australia-2026/), which corrected our own pricing error. **Was:** QuickBooks Plus "around $90" and Advanced $200 a month RRP. **Now:** Plus **$84** and Advanced **$125** (promo $25.20 and $37.50 for the first six months). Intuit did not change its prices; our earlier Plus and Advanced figures came from third-party trackers and were wrong. Simple Start $33 and Essentials $60 are unchanged. At the top self-serve tier QuickBooks is the cheaper sticker ($125 against MYOB Premier's $210). Both scores hold at 20/25 and the winner (MYOB) is unchanged. ## Frequently asked questions

### Which is better for Australian small business?

MYOB, for most. Both score 20/25, but MYOB has the stronger Australian fit (5/5 vs 3/5), GST-inclusive AUD pricing, ATO-native compliance, and local 24/7 support — and it's the only one that clears our Top Pick gate. Pick QuickBooks if deep AI automation is your priority.

### Which is cheaper in AUD?

MYOB for sole traders — its Solo plan is $99/year (about $8.25/month, GST inclusive), undercutting everything QuickBooks offers once the promo lapses. At the small-team end they sit in the same band, so price the landed cost including payroll add-ons.

### Is there a free plan or free trial?

Neither offers a permanent free plan. QuickBooks offers a 30-day free trial and MYOB a 14-day free trial on its paid plans. QuickBooks also pushes an aggressive new-customer promo (the offer rotates), but budget against the standard RRP, which applies from month seven.

### Do both lodge BAS to the ATO?

Yes. Both lodge GST, BAS and Single Touch Payroll straight to the ATO. MYOB's STP includes Phase 2; QuickBooks' GST agent is still in beta.

### Does either store my data in Australia?

Neither makes a clear AU data-residency commitment and neither holds IRAP. MYOB is an Australian company and is ISO 27001 certified; QuickBooks publishes only a general US hosting statement. For regulated or data-sensitive businesses, MYOB is the safer default.
