Head-to-head verdict

[**22**/25NotebookLMWinner](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-notebooklm-australia-2026/)

**Our pick: NotebookLM.** The verdict below says who should buy the other.

> **ℹ NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook.** Google renamed it in July 2026; it is the same product, and existing notebooks still work. This page uses the current name. *(Google's own FAQ, read at primary 23 September 2026.)*
>
> **ℹ Reflect is now Reflect Open.** Reflect rebuilt itself as a free, open-source Mac notes app with a paid iPhone and iPad app. This page compares Reflect Open, per our [8 October 2026 review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-reflect-australia-2026/).
>
> **Winner: Gemini Notebook** for most people — it's free, bills in AUD, and is the best tool going for getting answers out of documents you already have. Pick **Reflect** if you work on a Mac and want a private daily notebook whose notes stay on your own machine.

## What both tools actually do

They're both "AI notebooks," but they solve opposite problems. **Gemini Notebook** is Google's grounded research tool. You upload your sources — PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, even YouTube transcripts — and it answers questions *only* from those, with inline citations back to the exact passage. That grounding is the point: it hallucinates far less than a general chatbot because it's walled in to what you gave it. Its Audio Overviews (two AI hosts discussing your material like a podcast) are the rare gimmick that's genuinely handy. You don't write in Gemini Notebook — you interrogate documents with it.

**Reflect** is a single-user notes app built around backlinks. You write your own notes, and the AI layer helps you chat with them, transcribe, summarise meetings and fix grammar. Since its rebuild as Reflect Open, its signature is ownership: every note is a plain Markdown file in a folder you choose, Reflect holds no copy, and the code is open source. AI runs on your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or OpenRouter key. It's your personal knowledge base, not a research engine — and it's still beta software.

The plain split: Gemini Notebook helps you understand documents you've been given; Reflect helps you capture and connect your own thinking.

## Pricing in Australia

Both now have a real free way in, and both price in Australian dollars. **Gemini Notebook is free**, with real, usable limits and no credit card — and the higher limits come bundled into Google's AI plans, which **Google bills in Australian dollars with GST included** (AI Plus A$7.99/month, AI Pro A$32.99).

**Reflect is free on the Mac**, with no trial clock. The iPhone and iPad app, Reflect Pro, costs **A$14.99 a month or A$149 a year** on the Australian App Store, GST-inclusive. The catch is AI: Reflect doesn't charge for it, but your chosen provider bills you for usage, in its own currency.

So the June price gap has closed for Mac users. Gemini Notebook is still the cheaper all-round option, because its free tier includes the AI and works on any device.

## Where Gemini Notebook wins

- **It's free, and the free tier is genuinely usable** — 100 notebooks, 50 sources each, Audio Overviews included, AI built in.
- **Grounded answers with citations.** It only talks about your sources and shows you where each claim came from — far less hallucination.
- **No setup.** No API key, no sync to configure, no provider bill to watch.
- **Any device.** It runs in a browser, so Windows and Android users aren't locked out.
- **Audio Overviews.** Turn a pile of documents into a podcast-style briefing you can listen to.

## Where Reflect wins

- **Your notes stay on your machine.** Plain files in a folder you choose; Reflect holds no copy. Its App Store privacy label says the developer "does not collect any data from this app."
- **It's your notebook.** You capture and connect ideas with backlinks; Gemini Notebook can't be your daily note-taker.
- **No lock-in.** Open-source code and Markdown files mean your notes outlive the company.
- **Model choice.** You pick the AI provider and its privacy terms.

## Which to pick — decision framework

If your job is **making sense of documents** — reports, contracts, research papers, study material — pick Gemini Notebook. Nothing here does grounded, cited answering better, and it's free.

If your job is **capturing and connecting your own thinking** in a private notebook on a Mac, pick Reflect. Gemini Notebook isn't a daily note-taker, and Reflect keeps your notes where you control them.

If **you're not on a Mac, or don't want to manage an API key**, Gemini Notebook wins outright. Reflect Open has no Windows, Android or web app, and its AI needs your own key.

## The verdict

For most Australians, **Gemini Notebook is the pick**, and at 22/25 it's the higher-scoring tool in this pairing by six points — a genuine five stars. It's free, it bills in Australian dollars when you do pay, and it's the best tool we've tested for the specific, common job of getting straight, cited answers out of your own documents. The honest limit: it reads your sources but won't let you edit them, and consumer accounts get no Australian data region.

Reflect has closed some of the gap. At 16/25 it now clears our Australian Fit gate too: free on the Mac, real AUD on the App Store, and your notes on your own devices. It's held back by beta software, Apple-only platforms and an AI setup step that suits a tinkerer more than a busy business owner. But it isn't trying to do Gemini Notebook's job. If you're a solo writer or knowledge worker on a Mac who wants private, local notes, it's a strong free pick. For everyone else researching documents, start with Gemini Notebook — it's free, so there's nothing to lose by trying it first.

Update history
- **8 Oct 2026:** New edition, synced to our new Reflect review. **Reflect 15→16/25** (⭐⭐⭐ Good → ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good; Australian Fit 2→4). Reflect is now **Reflect Open**: free and open-source on the Mac, notes kept as local Markdown files, Reflect Pro on iPhone and iPad at A$14.99 a month or A$149 a year (Australian App Store, GST-inclusive), AI on your own provider key, Mac and Apple mobile only. The \~A$168/year USD plan, "no free tier", end-to-end encryption and five-platform claims are gone, and the title now says "Private Local Notebook". **Winner unchanged: Gemini Notebook** (22/25) still leads by six points; the price gap has narrowed because Reflect is now free on the Mac. Source: our [Reflect review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-reflect-australia-2026/) of 8 Oct 2026\. The previous edition is kept unchanged and linked above.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **A 10% GST uplift described in the text that is not in the figures.** The AUD figures here are plain conversions at 1.4045, and the note around them said we grossed them up for GST. Removed under our GST rule: a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service, and this publication stopped adding a notional 10% to its own conversions on 5 September 2026\. **No figure changed; only the description of them did. No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Gemini Notebook or Reflect better for Australians?

Gemini Notebook for most — it's free, bills in AUD, and is the best tool for getting cited answers out of your documents (22/25). Reflect is a private, local notebook, free on the Mac, with an iPhone app at A$149 a year, for solo Apple users who want their notes on their own machine (16/25).

### Can Gemini Notebook replace my note-taking app?

Not really. Gemini Notebook is built to interrogate sources you upload, not to be a daily notebook — it reads your documents but doesn't let you edit them. For writing and connecting your own notes, Reflect or a backlinked notes app is the better fit.

### Is Gemini Notebook free in Australia?

Yes. Gemini Notebook is free with usable limits and no credit card. Higher limits come bundled into Google's AI plans, which Google bills in Australian dollars with GST included (AI Plus A$7.99/month, AI Pro A$32.99).
