> **TL;DR:** Kiro, Amazon's spec-driven AI coding tool, is no longer a free toy. It launched in preview in July 2025, switched on paid plans in August, and reached general availability in November 2025\. There's still a genuinely useful free tier — 50 credits a month with Claude Sonnet 4.5 — but real work now sits behind paid plans from US$20 to US$200 a month, billed in US dollars. For Australians the appeal is the spec-first workflow, not local data residency. If you want structure over vibe coding, it earns a look.

## What changed

Kiro began life as a free preview with daily usage limits. That era is over. Pricing plans went live on 15 August 2025, and Kiro reached general availability on 17 November 2025 alongside a CLI, team plans and property-based testing.

Pricing now runs on a credit model. The Free tier gives you 50 credits a month at no cost, with access to Claude Sonnet 4.5 and several open-weight models. Paid tiers add premium models and far more headroom: Pro at US$20 a month (1,000 credits), Pro+ at US$40 (2,000), Pro Max at US$100 (5,000), and Power at US$200 (10,000). Run out and overage credits cost US$0.04 each, but only if you switch them on.

A credit is a unit of work. A simple prompt can cost less than one credit; running a full spec task costs more, and premium models burn credits faster than Kiro's default Auto agent.

## Why it matters for Australians

First, the money is in US dollars. Pro's US$20 is roughly A$28 at current rates, and Power's US$200 is around A$280 a month. Prices exclude tax, so factor GST into your real cost. Australia is a supported billing region, so signing up is straightforward.

Second, the data question. Kiro is built and run by AWS, but there is no published commitment to keep Australian users' code or prompts onshore. Your prompts are processed by Amazon's infrastructure, and the underlying models are largely US-hosted. If your firm has a hard rule that code cannot leave Australia, that rule applies here. Treat Kiro as a US-processed service until AWS says otherwise.

Third, the pitch itself. Kiro's whole identity is "spec-driven" development — you write a structured specification first, then the agent builds against it, with tests checking the code matches what you specified. That is the opposite of "vibe coding," where you prompt loosely and hope. For Australian small teams shipping real software, the spec-first discipline is the actual selling point, not another chat box.

## Does this change our recommendation?

Not on its own. Kiro moving to paid was always coming, and the free tier remains a fair way to try the spec workflow before you spend. The credit model rewards people who genuinely use it daily and punishes light, occasional users who forget overages are on. Our take holds: worth trialling for the spec-driven approach, with eyes open on US data processing and AUD-converted cost.
