> **Update — 20 September 2026:** Anthropic now bills Australians in Australian dollars, GST included. Claude Pro is **A$28/month** on annual billing (A$340 up front) or **A$34/month** monthly, and Max starts at **A$170.01/month**. The pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST". **Enterprise seats and API per-token rates stay in US dollars.** The USD figures in this piece were correct on the day it was published and are kept as the record. Anthropic announced today it will open a **Sydney office — its fourth in the Asia-Pacific.** Two details in the announcement matter more than the headline: the company **names coding as a top Australian use case**, and says it is **exploring local compute for data residency.**

## What changed

Until today, Anthropic was the major AI lab with the least Australian presence: no office, no local team, no local data story. The Sydney announcement changes the trajectory on all three. A fourth APAC office is not a token flag-plant — it's a statement about where Anthropic thinks its next enterprise customers are.

The "exploring local compute" line deserves the most attention. It's carefully worded — exploring, not committing — but it's the first time Anthropic has publicly connected Australia to data residency at all. For the banks, government agencies, and health organisations that have ruled out US-processed AI tools on principle, this is the sentence they've been waiting for someone to say.

## What it means for Australians

In the short term: not much changes at the keyboard. Claude billed in USD and processed offshore at the time of this announcement; the currency has since changed, the data location has not. But three groups should take note. **Developers** — Anthropic naming coding a top Australian use case means local developer experience is now someone's job. **Regulated industries** — "exploring local compute" is your cue to start the conversation with your risk team now, so you're ready if exploring becomes shipping. **Everyone choosing an assistant** — local presence historically precedes local pricing, local support, and local compliance work; today's announcement makes Anthropic's Australian story worth re-checking quarterly rather than annually.

## What we're watching

Whether "exploring local compute" matures into a real residency commitment, when the office actually opens, and whether AUD billing follows. Each of those would move Claude's standing for Australian business use — we'll reassess as they land.
