- Description: MarketMuse plans your whole content strategy by topic, not by keyword, and the depth is real. But since Siteimprove bought it, the price hides behind a demo call — and for Australians it bills in USD with no local hosting. Here's the honest read.

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** MarketMuse is a serious content-strategy tool, not a quick keyword toy. It maps an entire subject area, scores how thoroughly your pages cover it, builds detailed content briefs for writers, and shows where your competitors out-cover you. The topic modelling is the genuine article — it plans by topic, not by keyword. But two things hold it back for an Australian business owner. First, MarketMuse no longer shows a price: since Siteimprove bought it in October 2024, every paid tier is "book a demo," so you can't self-serve onto a paid plan without a sales call. Second, there's no Australian angle at all — billing is in USD, there's no native AUD or GST handling, no AU data hosting, and no local support. There is a genuinely useful **free plan** (one user, ten queries a month) and a **7-day trial** to test the engine before you talk to sales. For a busy Australian operator who just wants to brief and optimise a few articles a month, MarketMuse is heavier and more opaque than it needs to be. For a content team running a real publishing operation, it's worth the demo call.

## What MarketMuse is

MarketMuse is an AI content-planning and optimisation platform aimed at marketers and content teams. It was founded in 2013 and has been owned by Danish accessibility and SEO firm **Siteimprove** since the acquisition completed on 31 October 2024.

The tool is built around **topic modelling** rather than simple keyword counting. Feed it a subject and it analyses hundreds to thousands of pages on that topic, extracts the related sub-topics, and works out what it means for a page to genuinely be "about" that subject. Everything else is built on top of that engine:

- **Content Planning** — generates a roadmap of what to write or update across a whole subject area.
- **Competitive Content Analysis** — shows where rivals cover ground you've missed.
- **Content Clusters / inventory analysis** — maps your existing pages to find your real topic authority and the gaps.
- **Content Briefs** — detailed outlines (titles, subtitles, the related topics each section should hit) that you hand to a writer.
- **Optimize** — scores a draft for topical depth and comprehensiveness against the top 20 ranking pages, with a content score to chase as you edit.

It also ships a **generative AI** layer inside Optimize. MarketMuse describes its AI as **LLM-agnostic** — you're not locked to one model — and it can build outlines, expand or shorten passages, and draft sections. Its **First Draft** feature writes a section-by-section draft off the content brief and topic model, rather than from one short prompt. The company is clear that it's a "human in the loop" tool: it helps you write faster, it doesn't claim to write finished, publishable content for you.

That's the honest shape of it: a strategy and optimisation brain with a writing assistant attached, not a one-click article generator.

## What it costs in Australia

This is where MarketMuse has become harder to recommend to a time-poor Australian. **The pricing page no longer lists a single dollar figure.** Every paid tier now routes through a "Book a demo" button — a change that lines up with the Siteimprove acquisition. You can see the plan *names* and what each *includes*, but not the price, without a sales conversation.

Here is what the live pricing page does show, by tier:

| Plan | Price | What you get |
| -------------- | ------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Free** | **US$0** | 1 user, 10 queries/month, Topic Navigator, Keywords + SERP heatmap — no tracked topics or briefs |
| **Optimize** | **Quote only (book a demo)** | 1 user, 100 tracked topics, 5 Content Briefs/month, 1 Strategy Doc/month, 100 queries/month, 1 site inventory |
| **Research** | **Quote only (book a demo)** | 3 users, 1,000 tracked topics, 10 Content Briefs/month, 3 Strategy Docs/month, unlimited queries, 1 site inventory |
| **Strategy** | **Quote only (book a demo)** | 5 users, 10,000 tracked topics, 20 Content Briefs/month, 5 Strategy Docs/month, unlimited queries, all 9 brief types |
| **Enterprise** | **Quote only (contact sales)** | Custom volume, dedicated support, custom features |

*Pricing and tier features as shown on the MarketMuse pricing page, checked 3 June 2026\. MarketMuse does not publish a dollar amount for any paid plan — every paid tier routes through "Book a demo." The only dollar figures circulating for Optimize, Research and Strategy (commonly cited as roughly US$99, US$249 and US$499 a month) appear solely on third-party software-listing sites; MarketMuse itself publishes no such figures, so there is no vendor-confirmed price to convert to AUD or budget against. Get a written quote from the demo call.*

**Free tier and trial:** There is a genuine free plan — one user, ten queries a month — which is enough to run the topic engine over a handful of subjects and see whether the output is useful to you. The pricing page also carries a "Start my free trial" sign-up, but MarketMuse publishes no trial terms on its primary pages: the length of the trial and whether a credit card is required are not stated by the vendor, so you should confirm both at sign-up rather than rely on the figures repeated on third-party listing sites.

**Value verdict:** Hard to give a clean value call when the vendor won't show the number. The free plan is a real, no-risk way to test the engine, and that earns the tool credit. But quote-only paid pricing is friction for a small Australian business — you can't compare it against a Surfer or a Frase on a price list, you have to sit through a sales call first. If the legacy figures are anywhere near current, this is firmly an upper-mid-market tool, not a casual purchase.

## How it works in practice

The workflow is built for someone who runs content as an operation, not someone dashing off the odd blog post. You start at the strategy layer: point MarketMuse at a subject or a competitor, and it returns a plan — the topics worth owning, the gaps in your current coverage, the pages worth updating. From there you generate a **content brief**: a structured outline a writer can follow, with the sub-topics each section should cover so the finished piece reads as genuinely thorough rather than thin.

Then you write — in MarketMuse with the **First Draft** assist, or in your own tools — and run the draft through **Optimize**. Optimize scores the piece for topical depth against the top 20 ranking pages and shows, concretely, which related topics you've under-covered. You edit, the content score climbs, and you export to Word or Google Docs. That loop — plan, brief, draft, optimise, score — is the core of the product, and it's well thought through.

The strength is the topic model underneath all of it. Because the AI works from a model of the whole subject, not a single keyword, the briefs and the optimisation advice push you toward *coverage* rather than keyword stuffing. For a team that publishes regularly and wants every page to pull its weight in search, that's worth real money.

The catch is the learning curve and the weight. This is not a tool you open for five minutes. The interface assumes you understand content strategy, topic authority and SERP analysis. A 35-year-old Australian business owner who just wants help shaping three articles a month will find it more machinery than the job needs.

## What it does well

- **Plans by topic, not by keyword.** The patented topic-modelling engine maps a whole subject and scores true coverage — the genuine differentiator, and it's good.
- **Briefs writers can actually use.** Content briefs give a writer a clear, structured outline with the sub-topics each section must hit, which lifts the floor on draft quality.
- **Honest about its AI.** It's an LLM-agnostic "human in the loop" assistant — it helps you draft and optimise, and the vendor doesn't pretend it writes finished content for you.
- **A real free plan.** One user and ten queries a month is enough to test the engine before you ever speak to sales — rare for a tool at this level.
- **Competitive gap analysis is concrete.** It shows exactly where rivals out-cover you, which turns "write more content" into a specific to-do list.

## What to watch out for

- **The price is hidden.** No paid tier shows a dollar figure — everything is "book a demo." For a small Australian business that just wants to compare and buy, that's real friction.
- **No Australian fit at all.** No native AUD billing, no GST handling, no AU data residency or hosting region, no local support or business hours. It's a US-operated, USD tool.
- **It's heavy.** Steep learning curve, built for content teams and strategists — overkill if you publish only occasionally.
- **Generative output isn't the point.** First Draft and the Optimize AI are assists, not a finished-article engine — don't buy it expecting one-click blog posts.
- **Post-acquisition uncertainty.** Since Siteimprove took over in late 2024, pricing went quote-only. Siteimprove has stated publicly that it is folding MarketMuse into its all-in-one content, SEO and accessibility suite, so where a standalone MarketMuse subscription lands long-term is genuinely uncertain.

## Australian fit

- **Available in Australia:** Yes — it's a web app, accessible from Australia; listed on AU software directories.
- **Pricing in AUD:** **No.** Pricing is USD and quote-only; there's no native AUD plan or AU price list.
- **GST:** Not handled. MarketMuse's privacy policy and pricing pages make no mention of GST, AUD or an Australian tax invoice; as a US vendor billing in USD, GST treatment falls to you and your accountant.
- **Data residency:** US-based. MarketMuse's own privacy policy states it is "a US-based company" and does "all our tracking and analysis in the US" — there is no Australian hosting region and no AU data-residency option.
- **Local support:** None AU-specific. Support is via the vendor's standard channels; no AU office or business hours.
- **AU-aware outputs:** No. Topic models reflect whatever pages rank for your subject, not an Australian editorial lens; you'd steer AU spelling and context yourself.

## Alternatives

| -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Surfer SEO** | A lighter, price-transparent content optimiser with a published plan list — easier to buy and learn for a small AU business that just wants on-page guidance. |
| **Frase** | Cheaper, faster to brief-and-write, with clear pricing; less strategic depth than MarketMuse but far less machinery. |
| **Clearscope** | A premium optimiser with a clean content-grading workflow if your need is polishing drafts rather than planning a whole strategy. |

## Bottom line

MarketMuse is a strong tool doing a hard thing well: it plans content by topic, scores real coverage, and hands writers briefs that lift draft quality. If you run a content operation and you're serious about topic authority, it's worth the demo call.

But for the reader this publication is written for — a busy Australian business owner who wants a clear price and a tool they can buy this afternoon — MarketMuse has moved the wrong way. The price is now behind a sales conversation, it bills in USD with no GST or AUD handling, and there's no Australian data residency or support. The free plan is a genuine, low-risk way to test the engine, and you should use it before committing. Just go in knowing this is upper-mid-market software with a quote-only price tag, not a casual subscription.

It scores 14 for honest reasons. The core engine is good and the free plan is generous, but quote-only pricing, no Australian fit, and a steep learning curve all count against it for our audience. We'll revisit if MarketMuse restores public pricing or adds any AU-specific billing or hosting.

*Note: this review does not trigger the Australian Fit gate five-star gate — the raw total (14/25) sits well below the 21–25 band, so no star cap applies. Australian Fit (1/5) is the single biggest reason the score isn't higher.*

Update history
- **30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; negative confirmed, still quote-only.** `marketmuse.com/pricing` on an Australian connection shows no dollar figure for any plan: Free (1 user, 10 queries a month), Optimize, Research and Strategy with the same users, tracked topics, briefs and strategy documents as the table. Every plan's button, the free one included, now reads "Book a demo". No `A$`. `aud_native: false` already set. Score unchanged. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is MarketMuse available in Australia?

Yes — it's a web app accessible from Australia and listed on AU software directories. But there's no Australian fit at all: no AU data residency, no local support and no AU office or business hours.

### Does MarketMuse charge in AUD?

No. Pricing is in USD and, since Siteimprove bought it, quote-only — every paid tier routes through a sales demo. There's no native AUD plan and GST isn't handled, so that treatment falls to you and your accountant.

### Is there a free plan or trial?

Yes, a genuine free plan — one user and ten queries a month — enough to test the topic engine before you speak to sales. There's also a free-trial sign-up, but MarketMuse publishes no trial terms; confirm length and card requirements at sign-up.

### Does MarketMuse keep my data in Australia?

No. Its own privacy policy states it's a US-based company that does all tracking and analysis in the US, with no Australian hosting region or data-residency option.

### Who is MarketMuse best for?

Content teams running a real publishing operation that are serious about topic authority — the topic-modelling engine and writer briefs are the genuine article. It's overkill for a busy operator who just wants help with a few articles a month; look at Surfer SEO or Frase instead.
