**The gate:** Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Ideogram is the image generator to reach for when the words inside the picture matter — posters, logos, social tiles, menus, book covers, event flyers. Its in-image text rendering is the best in the consumer field, and the 3.0 model plus Canvas, Magic Fill and Style References make it a genuine production tool, not a toy. Buy the Plus plan at USD$20/month (about AUD$28 with GST); it unlocks the two things most Australians will need — private generations and the editing tools. The Free plan has a sting in the tail: everything you make is public and can't be deleted. The Australian fit is also weak — USD-only pricing, no local data residency, no AU support. If you specifically need legible text in generated images, this is the pick. For everything else, your existing Canva or Adobe stack may already cover it.

## Who this is for (and who it isn't)

Most image generators can paint a convincing sunset. Almost none can write the word "SUNSET" across it without producing something that looks like a ransom note. That single gap is the reason Ideogram exists, and it's the reason to consider it.

**Ideogram is for you if** you make things with words on them. A café owner mocking up a menu board. A real estate agent building "Just Listed" social tiles. A marketer producing event posters, ad creative or a quick logo concept. A self-publisher designing a book cover. If your image needs legible, deliberately styled text, Ideogram is the tool in this category that delivers it.

**Ideogram is not for you if** you want a general image model for text-free art, photography or concept work — Midjourney and others are stronger there — or if you already have a Canva or Adobe subscription that handles your typography in a layout editor. Ideogram generates the whole composition, text and all, in one go. That is its trick, and also its limit.

With that framing set, here is how it performs and where the Australian caveats bite.

## What Ideogram is

Ideogram is a text-to-image generator built by Ideogram AI Inc., a company founded in 2023 by Mohammad Norouzi with William Chan, Jonathan Ho and Chitwan Saharia — former Google Brain researchers who worked on Google's Imagen text-to-image system ([Ideogram launch announcement](https://ideogram.ai/launch?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). That pedigree matters, because the team set out to solve the one problem Imagen and its rivals were worst at: rendering readable text inside a generated image. The company raised USD$16.5 million in seed funding in August 2023 and an USD$80 million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz in February 2024 ([Bloomberg, 28 February 2024](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-28/startup-ideogram-raises-80-million-for-ai-image-generation?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) — secondary, for context).

The current flagship is **Ideogram 3.0**, which the vendor describes as its most capable model — "photorealistic images, legible text, and precise style control in a single generation" ([Ideogram 3.0 features page](https://ideogram.ai/features/3.0/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). In Ideogram's own human evaluations it leads the field on ELO rating ahead of Imagen 3, Flux Pro, Recraft V3 and DALL-E 3\. That is a vendor-run benchmark, so treat it as a claim rather than independent fact — but the underlying strength, accurate text, is visible in seconds the first time you generate a poster.

You reach Ideogram through a web app, an iOS app, an API and an MCP server. Around the core generator sit a set of design tools — Canvas, Magic Fill, Extend, Style References and Batch Generation — that turn it from a single-image novelty into something you can actually produce client work with.

## What it costs in Australia

Ideogram bills in US dollars only on the web, so the figures below are estimates at US$1 ≈ A$1.40 with around 10% GST assumed at checkout for Australian accounts. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this line previously said there was no AUD pricing anywhere. The iPhone app prices in AUD, about 60% dearer; see below the table.)*

*Pricing as of 2 June 2026\. Source:* [*Ideogram — Available Plans*](https://docs.ideogram.ai/plans-and-pricing/available-plans?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)*. Annual billing saves up to 20% (Plus drops to \~USD$15/mo, Pro to \~USD$42/mo). Ideogram publishes no AU-specific GST guidance, so confirm the GST line on your first invoice and check the tax invoice carries the vendor's tax details for your accountant.*

**The iPhone app prices in Australian dollars — and charges roughly 60% more.** The [Australian App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/id6476790495?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) declares `"priceCurrency":"AUD"` with Ideogram as seller of record and sells **Basic A$19.99/month or A$199.99/year, Plus A$49.99 or A$399.99, Pro A$129.99 or A$1,299.99**, GST included on an Apple tax invoice. Plus works out about A$45.45/month ex-GST against the \~A$28 above, and Pro about A$118.17 against \~A$84\. Note also that the App Store is still selling **Basic**, the legacy plan the web has closed to new buyers. **Subscribe on the web.** Read 21 September 2026.

Two things in the fine print catch people out. First, **the Basic plan is now a legacy plan and can no longer be purchased** — existing subscribers are grandfathered, but new Australians choosing a paid plan start at Plus. Second, **unused monthly priority credits expire at the end of each billing cycle**; only credits you buy as a top-up roll over. And the vendor's headline "up to 40 / 8,000 / 28,000 images" figures are calculated on the older, cheaper 2a model at Turbo speed. On the newest 3.0 model at Quality, a generation of four images costs 6 credits, so your real-world image count is a fraction of the advertised number. Read the credit meter, not the marketing.

**Value verdict:** Plus at roughly AUD$28/month is fair value and the tier most Australians should buy — it is the cheapest plan that gives you private generations and the editing tools, and the slow queue is unlimited, so light users rarely run out. Free is genuinely useful for trying the text rendering, but the public-by-default catch makes it unsuitable for any client or business work. Pro at \~AUD$84 only earns its keep if you need Batch Generation for high-volume, templated output.

## How it works in practice

The first generation tells you everything. Ask most image models for "a vintage travel poster that says VISIT TASMANIA in bold serif lettering" and you get a beautiful poster with mangled, dreamlike text. Ask Ideogram and the words come out crisp, correctly spelled and styled to match the design. That is the whole pitch, and it holds up — including on harder cases like multi-word headlines, small captions and stylised logo type that other models reliably butcher ([Ideogram 3.0 features page](https://ideogram.ai/features/3.0/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).

Beyond raw text, the design tools are what make it usable for real work. **Canvas** is an infinite board where you generate, arrange and combine images. **Magic Fill** is inpainting — select a region and replace an object, swap a background, fix a hand or add text. **Extend** is outpainting, growing an image beyond its original frame. **Style References** let you upload up to three images so new generations follow a consistent look — useful when you are producing a set of social tiles that all need to feel like one brand. **Character Reference** keeps the same person or mascot consistent across images. For high-volume work, **Batch Generation** on the Pro and Team plans takes a CSV and produces many variants in one session — the difference between making one poster and making fifty localised versions of it.

The model offers three rendering speeds — Turbo, Default and Quality — trading credits for detail. In practice you draft on Turbo and finalise on Quality. The catch, again, is that Quality on 3.0 burns credits fastest, so a heavy day on the newest model moves you toward the slow queue (which is unlimited on paid plans but can mean a wait of minutes per generation).

For developers and agencies, there is an API priced at roughly USD$0.03–0.09 per image depending on render tier ([Ideogram API docs](https://docs.ideogram.ai/plans-and-pricing/ideogram-api?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)), plus an MCP server for plugging Ideogram into other AI tooling.

## What it does well

- **Best-in-class text rendering.** This is the headline and it is real. Legible, correctly spelled, deliberately styled words inside images — posters, logos, signage, book covers — where almost every rival still fails. It is the single reason to choose Ideogram over a general image model.
- **Genuine design tools, not just generation.** Canvas, Magic Fill (inpainting) and Extend (outpainting) mean you can edit and compose, not just roll the dice on a prompt. Style and Character References keep a set of images on-brand and consistent.
- **A strong, current flagship model.** Ideogram 3.0 handles photorealism and complex layouts well, and leads the vendor's own quality evaluation. For brand graphics — logos, promo posters, product shots — it produces production-grade output, not just drafts ([Ideogram 3.0](https://ideogram.ai/features/3.0/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).
- **Unrestricted commercial rights on every tier.** Ideogram states "We do not restrict your rights in your output" on all plans, including Free ([Available Plans](https://docs.ideogram.ai/plans-and-pricing/available-plans?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). For an Australian small business, that removes a common licensing headache other tools impose.
- **Batch Generation for volume.** On Pro and Team, a CSV upload produces dozens of templated variants in one pass — the practical tool for an agency or marketer producing many localised tiles or ads.

## What it doesn't do well

- **Everything is public by default — and undeletable on Free.** On the Free plan your generations are posted to Ideogram's public gallery, prompts and all, and free accounts cannot delete images ([Ideogram Privacy Policy](https://ideogram.ai/legal/privacy?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). Private generation is locked behind Plus and Pro. For any client, confidential or brand work, this alone means you must pay — do not use Free for anything you would not publish.
- **Your inputs may train the model.** Ideogram's privacy policy states user inputs may be used to train its models ([Privacy Policy](https://ideogram.ai/legal/privacy?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). For sensitive briefs or proprietary brand material, factor that in.
- **USD-only pricing on the web.** You are charged in US dollars at your bank's FX rate, with GST added at checkout, so the landed cost runs higher than the headline figure and varies with the exchange rate. The iPhone app charges Australian dollars with GST included, but about 60% more. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026.)*
- **The credit model is easy to misread.** Monthly priority credits expire each cycle, and the advertised image counts use the cheapest old model. On 3.0 at Quality you get far fewer images than the marketing implies. Watch the meter.
- **Thin Australian and enterprise posture.** No AU data residency, no advertised SOC 2, ISO 27001 or IRAP certification, and no local support — help docs and a Discord community only. For regulated AU work, that is a real limitation.

## Australian fit

- **Available in Australia:** Yes — no geographic restriction. Web and iOS self-serve signup work globally. ([ideogram.ai](https://ideogram.ai/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au))
- **Pricing in AUD:** **On the web, no** — USD only, so expect roughly AUD$28/month landed on Plus after FX, ex-GST. **In the iPhone app, yes**, at A$49.99/month for Plus with GST included — about 60% dearer, so use the web. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this line previously read "No. USD only.")*
- **GST:** Not stated on the site. Expect 10% added at checkout under Australia's imported-digital-services rules — confirm on your first invoice and check it is a compliant tax invoice for your accountant.
- **Data residency:** None advertised. US/Canada-based vendor, no AU hosting region. ([Privacy Policy](https://ideogram.ai/legal/privacy?ref=theaidirectory.com.au))
- **Privacy default:** Generations are public by default; private generation requires Plus or Pro. Inputs may be used to train Ideogram's models. This is the single most important thing for an Australian business to understand before signing up.
- **Compliance:** No SOC 2, ISO 27001 or IRAP certification advertised on the public site as at 2 June 2026.
- **Local AU support:** None. Documentation and Discord community only. No AU office, no AU hours, no phone line.

| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Midjourney** | Stronger for text-free artistic and photographic imagery, with a distinctive aesthetic. Weaker at legible in-image text — the opposite trade-off to Ideogram. |
| **Canva (with AI)** | If you want to generate images and lay out text in a proper design editor with AU billing and a mature brand-kit workflow, Canva covers more of the job for a small business. |
| **Adobe Firefly** | For teams already in Adobe, Firefly integrates with Photoshop and Express and carries Adobe's commercial-safe training and enterprise compliance story. |
| **ChatGPT / Gemini image tools** | If you only occasionally need an image and already pay for a general assistant, the bundled image generation may be enough without a separate subscription. ([Read our ChatGPT review →](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/chatgpt-review-australia/)) |

## Bottom line

If the words in your images matter, Ideogram is the clear pick — there is no consumer tool that renders text more reliably, and the 3.0 model plus Canvas and Magic Fill make it a real production environment rather than a prompt-and-pray toy. For an Australian café owner, real estate agent, marketer or self-publisher producing posters, social tiles, logos and covers, Plus at about AUD$28/month is money well spent. Skip the Free plan for anything you wouldn't publish — public-by-default and no deletion makes it a liability for business work — and go straight to Plus to get private generations and the editing tools.

It scores 16 rather than higher for reasons that are mostly Australian and mostly about scope. The AU posture is weak — USD-only web pricing whose AUD alternative costs about 60% more, no data residency, no compliance certification, no local support — and the public-by-default privacy model is a genuine trap for the unwary. And Ideogram does one thing brilliantly rather than everything adequately: if your work has no text and you already own Canva or Adobe, you may not need it at all.

We would expect to refresh this review inside six months — Ideogram ships quickly, the model line moves fast, and the pricing and privacy posture are the areas most likely to change. We will flag any material movement in the monitor.

| Value for Money | 3/5 | Plus at \~AUD$28/mo is fair and unlimited slow credits help; expiring monthly credits and the misleading "up to X images" math (cheapest old model) hold it back |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Sign up and generate a usable poster in minutes; Canvas and Magic Fill are intuitive. The credit/rendering system takes a moment to understand |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Class-leading text rendering, Canvas, Magic Fill, Extend, Style/Character References, Batch Generation, API and MCP — deep for an image tool, narrower than a full design suite |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | No AU data residency, no advertised compliance, no local support, public-by-default privacy. USD-only on the web, and the App Store's AUD alternative charges roughly 60% more (Plus A$49.99/month) on a ladder that still includes the retired Basic tier, so it earns no credit. Update history
- **21 Sep 2026** — **Ideogram's Australian App Store listing prices in AUD — including a plan closed to new buyers on the web — and every tier is dearer. No score moves.** The bullet above is right about ideogram.ai. The [Australian App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/id6476790495?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) declares `"priceCurrency":"AUD"`, names **Ideogram** as seller and sells **Basic A$19.99/month or A$199.99/year, Plus A$49.99 or A$399.99, Pro A$129.99 or A$1,299.99**, GST included, on an Apple tax invoice. **Every row is worse than the web.** Plus is about A$45.45/month ex-GST against our published \~A$28; Pro about A$118.17 against \~A$84\. And the listing still sells **Basic**, which this review's own pricing section records as *"now a legacy plan and can no longer be purchased"* — the same legacy-ladder pattern found on Tana and Luma the same day. **Australian Fit holds at 2/5 and Value for Money at 3/5.** An AUD checkout that charges roughly 60% more than the web, on a ladder that includes a retired tier, is not Australian fit — it is a warning to print. The review now gives both prices and says to buy on the web. **Was: "Ideogram bills in US dollars only. There is no AUD pricing anywhere."** Found by the app-store pricing pass, `Audits/app-store-pricing-2026-09-21.md`. - **21 Sep 2026** — *Currency re-checked — still USD.* Read in an Australian browser: $0 / $4 / $15 / $20 / $30 / $42 / $60 across monthly and annual tiers, and neither `AUD` nor `A$` in the rendered page. No change to the review or the score. Wayback capture pending (archive.org unavailable 21 Sep 2026).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Ideogram available in Australia?

Yes — there's no geographic restriction. Web and iOS self-serve signup work globally. The Australian posture is thin, though: no local data residency, no advertised compliance certification and no AU support beyond docs and a Discord community.

### Does Ideogram charge in AUD?

On the web, no — Ideogram bills in USD there, and the Plus plan is USD$20/month, roughly AUD$28 landed after FX, ex-GST. The iPhone app does bill in Australian dollars with GST included, at A$49.99/month for Plus, but that is about 60% dearer, so subscribe on the web. Expect about 10% GST added at checkout under imported-digital-services rules; confirm it's a compliant tax invoice for your accountant.

### Is there a free plan?

Yes, but with a serious catch: on the Free plan everything you generate is public in Ideogram's gallery, prompts and all, and free accounts can't delete images. Private generation is locked behind the paid Plus and Pro tiers.

### What makes Ideogram different from other image tools?

Best-in-class in-image text rendering. Where almost every rival mangles words inside a generated image, Ideogram produces legible, correctly spelled, deliberately styled text — making it the pick for posters, logos, social tiles, menus and book covers.

### Which plan should an Australian buy?

Plus at about AUD$28/month. It's the cheapest tier that unlocks private generations plus the editing tools (Magic Fill, Extend, Style References), and the slow queue is unlimited. Skip Free for any business work, and only go to Pro if you need Batch Generation for volume.
