> **Verdict (TL;DR):** If your business runs on Shopify, Gorgias AI Agent is the most capable customer service tool in the market. Its Shopify integration is genuinely deep, its autonomous resolution works, and its proactive outreach actually reduces ticket volume. The problem is the billing model — AI-resolved conversations are charged twice, and the effective per-resolution cost is significantly higher than Gorgias advertises. ## What Gorgias is

Gorgias is a customer service platform built specifically for ecommerce merchants. It launched in 2015, is headquartered in San Francisco, and now serves more than 7,000 online stores — the majority of them on Shopify.

In early 2025, Gorgias released AI Agent v2.0\. This is not a basic chatbot. It reads your Shopify store data in real time and handles common customer questions autonomously: order status, returns, exchanges, product availability, discount codes. It can contact customers before they contact you — triggered by order events, shipping delays, or delivery windows. And it provides human agents with AI-drafted replies and pre-built macros when it does hand off a conversation.

It also supports proactive outreach — including cart-abandonment and shipping-update flows — across its supported channels. (Note: WhatsApp is not among the channels Gorgias lists publicly; see the channels section below.) For a Shopify merchant managing hundreds of support tickets a week, the pitch is compelling: install it, connect your store, and the AI starts resolving conversations without a human touching them.

The caveat is the pricing model. It is the most important thing to understand about Gorgias before you commit.

---

## What it costs in Australia

Gorgias prices in USD only. There is no AUD billing option. All prices below are USD, with AUD equivalents at 1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026), shown ex-GST. On GST, Gorgias's pricing FAQ states it "charges state sales tax where required by law… the exact amount depends on your billing address and local tax regulations". Gorgias operates an Australian affiliate entity (Gorgias Inc, listed on its subprocessor register), so an Australian merchant should expect tax to be assessed against their billing address; whether that line is labelled and charged as Australian GST on your specific invoice is the thing to confirm with your accountant before claiming input tax credits.

### Base plan pricing

Since September 2026 the plans bundle Helpdesk and AI Agent into one price, with an allowance of each built in.

| Plan | Monthly billing (USD) | Annual billing per month (USD) | AUD equivalent (annual) | Included | Overage rates |
| -------- | --------------------- | ------------------------------ | ----------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| Starter | US$40 | — (monthly only) | \~A$56/mo | 50 tickets, 30 automated interactions | US$0.40/ticket · US$1.50/interaction |
| Basic | US$90 | US$77/mo | \~A$108/mo | 300 tickets, 30 automated interactions | US$0.40/ticket · US$1.50/interaction |
| Pro | US$550 | US$471/mo | \~A$662/mo | 2,000 tickets, 190 automated interactions | US$0.36/ticket · US$1.50/interaction |
| Advanced | US$1,430 | US$1,227/mo | \~A$1,723/mo | 5,000 tickets, 530 automated interactions | US$0.36/ticket · US$1.50/interaction |
| Custom | Talk to sales | — | — | 5,000+ conversations | Negotiated |

The page also breaks each bundle into its two components, and the helpdesk halves are exactly the prices we recorded in June: Starter US$10, Basic US$50, Pro US$300, Advanced US$750\. The rest is AI Agent — US$30, US$27, US$171 and US$477 respectively. Read that way, the sticker price on Basic went from US$50 to US$77 because the AI you used to buy by the resolution now sits inside the plan.

There is no free tier. Gorgias offers a 7-day free trial.

### The AI resolution fee — the part that catches people out

Every plan now includes a fixed number of automated interactions, and Gorgias charges **US$1.50 (\~A$2.11) for each one past the allowance**. The allowances are small — 30 a month on Starter and Basic, 190 on Pro, 530 on Advanced — so any merchant actually leaning on the AI buys most of its work at the overage rate.

The bundled interactions are priced far lower. Gorgias's own feature table puts the in-plan rate at US$1.00 on Starter and US$0.90 on Basic and Pro, which is what the AI Agent component prices work out to: US$27 for 30 interactions on Basic is US$0.90 each, and US$171 for 190 on Pro is the same. Past the allowance the marginal price jumps to US$1.50 — a 67% step up from the US$0.90 this review costed in June. One important exception: if a customer contacts a human agent within 72 hours of an automated interaction, that resolution is not charged as an AI-resolved conversation. This partially mitigates the double-billing concern for merchants with high escalation rates, but does not eliminate it.

## The double-billing trap — what it actually costs

This is the most important section of this review. Read it before running a free trial.

When Gorgias AI Agent resolves a conversation autonomously, that conversation counts as a ticket against your base plan's monthly allowance AND you pay the additional per-resolution fee. You are billed twice for the same conversation.

Gorgias does not make this prominent in its primary marketing materials.

**Scenario: Australian Shopify merchant on Basic annual plan, 500 AI resolutions per month.**

The Basic annual plan includes 300 tickets and 30 automated interactions per month at US$77/month. If your AI handles 500 conversations, 470 interactions and 200 tickets fall outside the allowances.

| Cost component | Calculation | Monthly total (AUD approx.) |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------- | --------------------------- |
| Basic plan (annual, Helpdesk + AI Agent) | US$77 → \~A$108 | A$108 |
| Automated-interaction overage (470 past the 30 included × US$1.50) | US$705 → \~A$990 | A$990 |
| Ticket overage for 200 excess tickets | US$0.40 × 200 = US$80 → \~A$112 | A$112 |
| **Total** | US$862 | **\~A$1,211** |

At lower volume — say, 100 AI-handled conversations per month on the same plan — the maths is more manageable: A$108 (plan) + A$147 (70 interactions past the allowance) = about A$256/month, with tickets still inside the 300 included. But as AI volume scales, the overage rate does the damage the old per-resolution fee used to.

**The effective per-resolution cost** on an annual Basic plan at 500 conversations works out to roughly US$1.72 each (\~A$2.42), once the plan fee and both overages are spread across the volume. Gorgias's feature table still shows US$0.90 per automated interaction on Basic. The real number is nearly double that for any merchant who uses the AI at scale.

This is not an unusual structure in enterprise SaaS. What is unusual is that it is not clearly surfaced in Gorgias's primary marketing. Australian merchants comparing Gorgias to per-ticket-only competitors like Tidio need to run their own numbers before committing.

## How it works in practice

Setup for a Shopify merchant is fast. Connect your Shopify store, and Gorgias pulls in your products, orders, customers, and fulfilment data. The AI Agent reads this live data to answer questions autonomously — "Where is my order?", "Can I exchange this for a different size?", "Is this still in stock?" — without a human ever seeing the ticket.

The proactive triggers are a genuine differentiator. You can configure the AI to contact customers when a shipment is delayed, when a delivery window is approaching, or when an order has been unfulfilled for a set period. This reduces inbound ticket volume at the source — which matters for the billing model above.

For human agents, Gorgias provides AI-drafted reply suggestions and a macro library that learns from your store's historical responses. An agent handling an escalated ticket gets a pre-populated suggested reply. They edit and send, rather than write from scratch.

On channels, Gorgias's current public pages list email, live chat, SMS, phone/voice, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram. WhatsApp is not listed as a supported channel on those pages. If WhatsApp is a hard requirement for your store, treat it as unavailable unless Gorgias confirms otherwise in writing — do not assume it from marketing copy.

One firm limit: Gorgias AI Agent v2.0 is a Shopify product. Outside Shopify — WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce — the autonomous AI loses the order-data access that makes it useful. It can handle basic scripted responses, but you are paying Gorgias rates for a basic helpdesk. There are cheaper options for non-Shopify merchants.

---

## What it does well

- **Shopify integration is genuinely deep.** Gorgias reads live order data — not just static product information. The AI can look up a specific customer's order status, check return eligibility rules, and apply discount codes, all without human involvement.
- **Proactive outreach reduces ticket volume.** Contacting customers before they contact you is underutilised by most small merchants. This feature works.
- **AI-drafted replies save real time for human agents.** Even in hybrid workflows where the AI handles 30–40% of tickets autonomously, the drafted reply feature cuts handle time on escalations.
- **Multi-channel support.** SMS, live chat, email, phone/voice, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram are confirmed channels. WhatsApp is not listed as a supported channel.
- **Established platform.** 7,000+ merchants, Shopify Plus partner status, a decade in market. Not a startup risk.

---

## What it doesn't do well

- **The billing structure is opaque.** Charging both a resolution fee and a ticket against your plan limit per AI-resolved conversation is not standard. It is not prominently explained. High-volume merchants will be surprised by their invoices.
- **No AUD billing.** Every invoice arrives in USD. Exchange rate fluctuations affect your effective monthly cost. For AU businesses tracking expenses against AUD budgets, this creates ongoing accounting friction.
- **No free tier.** A 7-day trial is not a free tier. Tidio, a direct Shopify ecommerce competitor, offers a functional free plan. For small merchants testing AI-assisted support before committing, this is a real barrier.
- **Essentially Shopify-only for AI autonomy.** Outside Shopify, you are paying Gorgias pricing for a basic helpdesk. That is not good value — there are cheaper options.
- **Data residency is not Australia-specific for merchants.** Gorgias runs on Google Cloud Platform; its own subprocessor register lists GCP regions in the US, EU and Australia, but Gorgias's privacy policy states it "may process and store personal information both inside the United States and overseas". There is no published option to pin AU merchant data to the Australian region by default. Merchants handling personal customer data under the Australian Privacy Act should request the Data Processing Agreement (gorgias.com/legal/data-processing-agreement) before signing up.

## Australian fit

Gorgias has a meaningful Australian customer base — Shopify is the dominant ecommerce platform in Australia, and many mid-size AU merchants are already using or evaluating Gorgias. But the platform's Australian-market support is thin for a tool at this price point.

**Pricing:** USD-only. No AUD billing. No AUD pricing shown in the checkout flow or on the vendor's pricing page. This is an ongoing friction point for businesses managing AUD-denominated budgets.

**GST:** Gorgias's pricing FAQ states it "charges state sales tax where required by law… the exact amount depends on your billing address and local tax regulations". Gorgias operates an Australian affiliate entity (Gorgias Inc, on its subprocessor register), so tax is assessed against your billing address. Confirm with your accountant whether the tax line on your invoice is Australian GST and is claimable as an input tax credit — particularly on Pro plans or higher, where monthly spend can exceed the GST registration threshold.

**Data residency:** Gorgias runs on Google Cloud Platform. Its subprocessor register lists GCP regions in the United States, the European Union and Australia, but the privacy policy is explicit that data "may process and store personal information both inside the United States and overseas". In other words, there is GCP Australian infrastructure in the mix, but no published guarantee that an Australian merchant's data stays in Australia. (Note: the older privacy URL, gorgias.com/privacy-policy, now 404s — the live policy sits at gorgias.com/legal/privacy.) Merchants should request the current Data Processing Agreement (gorgias.com/legal/data-processing-agreement). Given that Gorgias stores customer conversation data — which can include personal information — this is a material issue for AU merchants under the Australian Privacy Act, not a footnote.

**Support:** Gorgias offers 24/7 live chat support on Pro plans and above. It does not publish AU-business-hours support commitments or response-time SLAs for Basic-plan customers — so if AU-hours support matters to you on a lower tier, confirm it directly with Gorgias before committing.

**AU market relevance:** High on paper. Australian ecommerce is predominantly Shopify-native. The use cases Gorgias solves — order status, returns, shipping queries — are universal. AI-drafted replies function in Australian English without reconfiguration, though reviewing template language for AU-appropriate tone before deploying is advisable.

The honest assessment: Gorgias's product is highly relevant for Australian Shopify merchants, but the company has not invested in AU-market localisation. No AUD billing, unconfirmed data routing, and an unclear GST position are gaps that better-localised competitors do not have.

---

## Alternatives

- **Tidio** — Consider Tidio if you want a free tier, simpler and more predictable pricing with no per-resolution fee, and multi-platform support beyond Shopify. Tidio's AI features are less deep for Shopify-native autonomous workflows, but total cost of ownership is easier to model. \[Review forthcoming on The AI Directory Australia.\]
- **Freshdesk** — Consider Freshdesk if you need a multi-channel helpdesk with AI assist features and are not primarily Shopify-native. Freshdesk has a free tier and more transparent per-seat pricing. Better suited to businesses running support across email, phone, and social simultaneously.
- **Zoho Desk** — Consider Zoho Desk if Australian data residency is a hard requirement. Zoho has AU data centre options and AUD billing, making it the stronger choice for merchants where the Privacy Act imposes real obligations on customer data handling.

---

## Bottom line

Gorgias AI Agent v2.0 is the best autonomous customer service AI for Shopify merchants. The Shopify integration is genuinely deep — not surface-level API access — and the proactive trigger system reduces inbound volume rather than just handling it. For a high-volume Shopify merchant who models the full billing cost before committing, this tool can deliver a real return on investment.

The billing model is the problem. Most merchants will not realise that AI-resolved conversations are charged twice — once against their ticket allowance and once against a much smaller automated-interaction allowance. Gorgias's marketing does not surface this clearly. At scale, the effective per-resolution cost is materially higher than the US$0.90 the feature table advertises. A Basic-plan merchant with 500 AI-handled conversations per month can expect a monthly bill of approximately A$1,211 — once you include the plan and both overages — not the A$108 "Basic plan" impression the pricing page creates.

For small Australian Shopify merchants with under 200 tickets per month, the economics are more manageable — but at that volume, a part-time support hire might outperform the AI on cost-per-resolution. The sweet spot is high-volume Shopify merchants who've done the full billing calculation.

The other flag is AU market support. No AUD billing, unconfirmed data residency under the Privacy Act, and unclear GST treatment add friction that competitors like Zoho Desk and Freshdesk have addressed. Gorgias needs to confirm its AU data routing for merchants with Privacy Act obligations.

**Who should sign up:** High-volume Shopify merchants (500+ tickets/month) who have modelled the full billing cost and need autonomous AI resolution at scale. Best suited to merchants on Pro plan or above where the per-resolution economics improve.

**Who should skip (for now):** Merchants under 300 tickets/month, any business prioritising cost predictability, merchants who need confirmed AU data residency before handling personal customer data, and any business not primarily on Shopify.

*Australian Fit gate note: A score of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent requires Australian Fit ≥ 4/5\. Gorgias scores 2/5 on Australian Fit. The four-star rating stands; the gate prevents an Excellent rating for a tool with unconfirmed data residency and no AUD billing. Update history
- **24 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 Re-verified by browser: the 20–21 September re-cut still holds.** Read on an Australian connection, 24 September 2026\. The live pricing page confirms the ladder recorded below — **Starter US$40/mo** is still the entry, AI Agent is still on every plan, and Gorgias still frames the model as *“pay only when it resolves a conversation”* with the helpdesk *“never priced per agent”*. The page states **USD** and carries **no AUD**, so `aud_native: false` stands. **No figure and no score changed** — this is a dated confirmation of someone else's recent work, recorded so the next pass does not re-check it. Closes this tool's row on the AUD claim queue.
- **21 Sep 2026** — **Value for Money re-scored 3/5 → 2/5, and the total 17/25 → 16/25.** The star band is unchanged (⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good, 16–20). Two things moved it, both re-verified at [gorgias.com/pricing](https://www.gorgias.com/pricing?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) on 21 September 2026\. First, the marginal price of an AI-handled conversation is now **US$1.50 past the allowance, was US$0.90 on annual billing** — a 67% rise — and the allowances are small enough (30 a month on Basic, against 300 included tickets) that a merchant leaning on the AI buys almost all of it at the overage rate. Second, the double-charge this review has argued since June is now **stated by Gorgias itself** in the structured data on its pricing page: "Each automated interaction also counts as one helpdesk ticket." A review headlined "watch the billing traps", whose worked example turns an advertised A$108 plan into an A$1,211 monthly bill, was carrying the most common Value for Money score in our corpus. It is not a typical case. No other criterion moved; Australian Fit stays 2/5 and the Australian Fit gate outcome is unchanged. Full reasoning: `Audits/contested-scores-2026-09-21.md`. - **20 Sep 2026** — Gorgias has folded AI Agent into every plan and re-cut the ladder. Headline prices are now **Starter US$40/mo (monthly only) · Basic US$90 monthly or US$77 annual · Pro US$550 or US$471 · Advanced US$1,430 or US$1,227**, **was helpdesk-only Starter US$10 · Basic US$60 / US$50 · Pro US$360 / US$300 · Advanced US$900 / US$750 with a separate US$0.90–US$1.00 per-AI-resolution fee**. Each plan now includes a small allowance of automated interactions (30 on Starter and Basic, 190 on Pro, 530 on Advanced) and charges **US$1.50 for every automated interaction past it, was US$0.90 on annual billing**. The helpdesk components inside the bundles (US$10 / US$50 / US$300 / US$750) are the prices we already carried. The worked cost model in this review has been rebuilt on the new numbers. AUD equivalents re-based at 1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026), ex-GST. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is Gorgias available in Australia?

Yes. It has a meaningful Australian customer base, since Shopify is the dominant ecommerce platform here. But its AU-market support is thin — no AUD billing, unconfirmed data routing, and unclear GST.

### Does Gorgias charge in AUD?

No. Gorgias prices in USD only — no AUD billing in the checkout flow or on the pricing page. Tax is assessed against your billing address; confirm with your accountant whether the line is Australian GST and claimable before claiming input tax credits.

### Is there a free plan?

No. There's only a 7-day free trial — not a free tier. Direct rival Tidio offers a functional free plan, which is a real barrier for small merchants wanting to test AI support first.

### What's the catch with Gorgias's pricing?

AI-resolved conversations are charged twice — once against your ticket allowance and once against the much smaller automated-interaction allowance — and interactions past that allowance cost US$1.50 each, well above the US$0.90 the feature table advertises. Run the full numbers before you sign up.

### Is my customer data stored in Australia?

Not guaranteed. Gorgias runs on Google Cloud (US, EU and Australia regions) but its privacy policy says data may be processed in the US and overseas, with no published AU-only option. Request the Data Processing Agreement if you handle personal data under the Privacy Act.
