**The gate:** Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Veo 3.1 is the best text-to-video tool an Australian can actually sign up for and pay for in AUD today. It generates short clips (8 seconds in Flow, 10 seconds in the Gemini app) at 1080p with synchronised native audio — dialogue, sound effects and ambient noise in one pass — which is the trick that puts it ahead of most rivals. You reach it through a **Google AI Pro** plan at **$32.99 AUD/month** (limited video quota) or **Google AI Ultra** from **$149.99 AUD/month** (the serious creator tier). Pricing is GST-inclusive at the Australian checkout, which is rarer than it sounds. The catches: there's no standalone Veo subscription (you're buying a whole Google AI bundle), generations are quota-limited and reset against opaque daily caps, every clip carries an invisible SynthID watermark, and you'll still hit the occasional warped hand or melting object. For most Australian creators, **start on Pro; only move to Ultra if you're generating video daily.**

## Who this is for (and who it isn't)

**Get Veo 3.1 if you're** a small-business owner, marketer or content creator who wants short social clips, product teasers or explainer snippets with sound — without a camera, a crew or a stock-footage subscription. It's also the obvious pick if you already pay for Google One storage or use Gemini daily, because the video sits inside a plan you half-own already.

**Skip it if you** need long-form video (anything past \~10 seconds in one shot), frame-perfect brand consistency across a 60-second ad, or guaranteed Australian data residency for sensitive footage. It's also wrong for you if you want to pay only for video — there's no Veo-only plan, so a light user is subsidising a big Gemini/storage bundle they may not touch.

## What Google Veo 3.1 is

Veo 3.1 is Google DeepMind's text-to-video and image-to-video model, released **14 October 2025** ([Google DeepMind — Veo](https://deepmind.google/models/veo/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). You type a prompt — or feed it up to three reference images — and it generates a short clip with **natively generated audio**: speech with lip-sync, sound effects and ambient sound, all produced in the same pass as the picture rather than dubbed on afterwards.

Australians reach it three ways: the **Gemini app** (the simplest path), **Google Flow** (Google's dedicated AI filmmaking editor, with scene extension, "ingredients to video" and insert/remove tools), and the **Gemini API / Vertex AI** for developers ([Google DeepMind — Veo](https://deepmind.google/models/veo/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). For a non-technical creator, the Gemini app is where you'll live.

The "3.1" matters: versus Veo 3, it brought richer native audio, finer camera-movement presets, and the "ingredients" system that lets you lock a character or product across shots ([Times of Cinema / TechRadar coverage — Veo 3.1 launch, Oct 2025](https://www.techradar.com/ai-platforms-assistants/veo-3-1-is-coming-soon-and-googles-clearly-aiming-it-right-at-sora-2-with-longer-video-support?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).

## What it costs in Australia

There is no standalone Veo subscription. Video generation is bundled into Google's AI plans, and the prices below are exactly what Google shows on its Australian subscriptions page — **GST-inclusive**, which is the headline for local buyers.

| Plan | Price (AUD, GST-incl.) | US price (ref.) | Veo / video access |
| ------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- | --------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Free** (Google Account) | **$0/month** | $0 | Everyday Gemini help; effectively no/limited video generation |
| **Google AI Pro** | **$32.99/month** | \~USD$19.99 | Video generation with limited quota; \~4× free-tier usage limits; Flow credits; 2 TB storage |
| **Google AI Ultra** | **From $149.99/month** (higher tier $329.99/month) | \~USD$249.99 | Full Veo 3.1 access; up to \~20× Pro usage limits; most Flow credits; 20 TB+ storage |

Source: [Google — AU subscriptions page](https://gemini.google/au/subscriptions/?hl=en-AU&ref=theaidirectory.com.au). USD reference figures are the published US-region prices for the same plans; at AUD ≈ 1.40 × USD, USD$19.99 ≈ AUD$28 so Google's $32.99 is close to a straight conversion plus GST — fair, not gouged.

**GST and tax invoice:** Because Google bills through an Australian entity, the price you see is the price you pay (no surprise +10% at checkout, unlike most US-only SaaS), and Google issues a GST-compliant tax invoice with an ABN from your Google payments centre — claimable if you're registered. That's a genuine Australian-fit win and worth saying plainly.

**Value verdict:** Pro at **$32.99/month** is the sweet spot — you get real Veo 3.1 video with sound for less than a couple of stock-footage clips, GST handled, invoice claimable. Ultra at **$149.99/month** only makes sense if you generate video most days and keep hitting Pro's quota ceiling; otherwise you're paying a 4.5× premium largely for storage and headroom you won't use.

## How it works in practice

In the Gemini app, you pick the video tool, type a prompt (or attach up to five photos to animate), and wait. A clip lands in roughly one to three minutes. In the Gemini app the output runs to **10 seconds**; via Flow the native model output is **8 seconds** at **1080p** ([Google — Gemini video generation, AU](https://gemini.google/au/overview/video-generation/?hl=en-AU&ref=theaidirectory.com.au); [Google DeepMind — Veo](https://deepmind.google/models/veo/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).

The native audio is the part that genuinely surprises people: ask for "a barista steaming milk in a busy Melbourne café," and you get the hiss of the steam wand and café chatter, not a silent loop you have to score yourself. For longer or more controlled pieces, **Flow** lets you extend scenes, carry an "ingredient" (a character or product) across shots, and insert or remove objects — closer to an editing suite than a single prompt box.

First value in under 15 minutes? Yes, comfortably — if you already have a Google account, you're one upgrade and one prompt away.

## What it does well

- **Native, synchronised audio in one pass.** Dialogue with lip-sync, sound effects and ambient sound generated with the video — not bolted on. This is the clearest reason to pick Veo over silent-output rivals.
- **Genuine 1080p output.** Clean enough to drop straight into social or a client deck without looking like a 2024 AI clip ([Google DeepMind — Veo](https://deepmind.google/models/veo/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).
- **Image-to-video with up to three reference images.** Lock a product or character and animate it, rather than re-rolling the dice on a fresh prompt each time.
- **Flow gives real directorial control.** Camera-movement presets (pans, zooms, drone shots), scene extension and object insert/remove move it past one-shot novelty.
- **It's reachable and billable in Australia — properly.** AUD pricing, GST-inclusive, ABN tax invoice. For a tool of this calibre, that combination is uncommon.

## What it doesn't do well

- **No standalone Veo plan.** You can't just buy video — you buy a whole Google AI + storage bundle. Light video users overpay for Gemini and terabytes they don't need.
- **Quota-limited generations with opaque caps.** Both Pro and Ultra meter video against usage limits Google describes only as multiples ("4×", "up to 20×"), not as a clear "X clips per day." You discover the ceiling by hitting it.
- **Short clips.** 8–10 seconds per generation. Longer narratives mean stitching in Flow — workable, but not the one-click long-form some expect.
- **Every clip is SynthID-watermarked.** An invisible AI provenance marker is embedded in all Veo output ([Google DeepMind — Veo](https://deepmind.google/models/veo/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). Sensible for disclosure, but you can't produce "unmarked" footage.
- **Artefacts still appear.** Warped hands, melting edges and physics glitches turn up on a meaningful share of generations — budget re-rolls into your time.

## Australian fit

- **Available in AU:** Yes — fully, via the Gemini app, Flow and the API. No VPN, no invite code, no workarounds.
- **Pricing in AUD:** Yes — $32.99 (Pro) / from $149.99 (Ultra), shown natively in AUD ([Google — AU subscriptions](https://gemini.google/au/subscriptions/?hl=en-AU&ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).
- **GST:** Included in the displayed price; GST-compliant tax invoice with ABN issued via Google payments. Strong mark.
- **Data residency:** No Australian data-residency guarantee for consumer Gemini/Veo use — processing runs on Google's global infrastructure. Don't feed it confidential or regulated footage.
- **Compliance/provenance:** SynthID watermarking on all output aids AI-disclosure obligations.
- **Local support:** Google's consumer support is global, not AU-hours dedicated — self-serve help centre first, no local account manager on these tiers.

**Net:** Availability, AUD billing and GST treatment are excellent. Data residency and local support drag it down. AU Fit lands at **4/5** — clearing the gate, but only just.

## Alternatives

| --------------------------- | -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **OpenAI Sora 2** | n/a in AU | The headline rival — but the consumer app shut down 26 April 2026 and was never officially available in Australia anyway. Not a real option here. |
| **Runway (Gen-4.5)** | from \~USD$12/mo (\~AUD$17 +GST) | Runway's own Gen-4.5 model with the deepest editing toolkit in the category. Credit-metered; USD-billed, GST added at checkout. |
| **Kling AI (VIDEO 3.0)** | from \~USD$10/mo (\~AUD$14 +GST) | Cheap entry with a free daily-credit tier; first-month promo runs lower. Weaker native audio; USD-only billing, no AU entity. |
| **Google Flow (same plan)** | included with Pro/Ultra | Not a separate buy — it's where you go for longer, edited Veo pieces once you're already paying for a Google AI plan. |

Runway figures: [Runway pricing](https://runwayml.com/pricing?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) (Standard USD$12, Pro USD$28, Max USD$76 per seat/mo). Kling figures: [Kling membership plans](https://kling.ai/app/membership/membership-plan?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) (Standard list \~USD$10/mo, first-month promo lower).

## Bottom line

Sora was the model everyone wanted to compare against — and as of 26 April 2026 its consumer app is gone, and it never officially worked in Australia to begin with ([OpenAI — Sora discontinuation](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001152-what-to-know-about-the-sora-discontinuation?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). That leaves Veo 3.1 as the genuine answer to "what's the best text-to-video tool I can actually use here?" It generates 1080p clips with synced native audio, you buy it in AUD, the GST is sorted, and you get a claimable tax invoice. **For most Australian creators, start on Google AI Pro at $32.99/month** and only step up to Ultra at $149.99/month if you're generating video daily and hitting the quota wall. Just go in clear-eyed: short clips, opaque quotas, an unavoidable SynthID watermark, and the odd warped frame are the price of admission.

## Score

| --------------------- | --------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Value for Money (AUD) | 4/5 | Pro at $32.99 GST-incl. is fair; no Veo-only plan and the Ultra jump to $149.99 cost it the fifth star. |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | First clip in under 15 min via the Gemini app; Flow has a learning curve. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Native audio, image-to-video, reference images, Flow editing — held back by 8–10s clip length. |
| Australian Fit | 4/5 | AUD pricing, GST-inclusive, ABN invoice — excellent; no AU data residency and no local-hours support pull it back. |
| Reliability & Support | 2/5 | Google stability is high, but consumer support is self-serve/global and generation artefacts persist. |
| **Total** | **18/25** | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |

Update history
- **21 Sep 2026** — *Currency re-verified — and a directory data error fixed.* Google's Australian subscriptions page was read in an Australian browser: **A$32.99/month (Google AI Pro)** and **A$149.99/month (Google AI Ultra, higher tier A$329.99)**, GST-inclusive, exactly as this review states — the figures have not moved. What was wrong was the **directory**: the manifest carried `has_aud: false` for Veo while the review asserts native AUD billing in nine separate places, because the flag is inferred from body text and this review's rivals table names Runway and Kling as USD-billed. That is the same inference failure that mis-flagged Zoho Desk earlier today. Worse, the price extractor had read the table's **USD reference column** rather than its AUD column, so the directory tile for Veo was publishing "A$32.99/mo — **ex-GST · billed in USD**" against a review whose whole Australian-fit argument is that the price is **GST-inclusive and billed in AUD**. Both halves of that note were wrong, and in the two ways that matter most to an Australian buyer. `aud_native: true`, `billed_in: AUD`, `price_from` and `price_note` are now pinned in frontmatter, which overrides both inferences. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is Google Veo 3.1 available in Australia?

Yes — fully, via the Gemini app, Google Flow and the API. No VPN, no invite code, no workarounds. It's the best text-to-video tool an Australian can actually sign up for today.

### Does Veo charge in AUD?

Yes. There's no standalone Veo plan — video is bundled into Google AI Pro ($32.99/month) or Ultra (from $149.99/month), shown natively in AUD and GST-inclusive, with a GST-compliant ABN tax invoice from your Google payments centre.

### Is there a free way to use it?

Not really. The free Google Account tier gives everyday Gemini help but effectively no or very limited video generation — you need a Pro or Ultra plan for real Veo 3.1 access.

### Is my video data stored in Australia?

No. There's no Australian data-residency guarantee for consumer Gemini/Veo use — processing runs on Google's global infrastructure. Don't feed it confidential or regulated footage. Every clip also carries an invisible SynthID watermark.

### Which plan should I start on?

Pro at $32.99/month for most creators — real Veo 3.1 video with sound, GST handled, invoice claimable. Only move to Ultra at $149.99/month if you're generating video most days and keep hitting Pro's quota ceiling.
