> **CORRECTION POSTED — 15 May 2026 · pricing re-verified 20 June 2026.** Our 9 May 2026 review priced AI Pro at A$19.99/month and listed a "Premium" tier at A$29.99/month. Both were wrong. Current verified pricing from [gemini.google/au/subscriptions](https://gemini.google/au/subscriptions/?hl=en-AU&ref=theaidirectory.com.au) is: **AI Plus A$7.99, AI Pro A$32.99, AI Ultra from A$149.99** (rising to A$329.99 for the top usage tier) — there is no "Premium" tier (it was renamed to "Pro" in May 2025). AI Plus dropped from A$12.49 to A$7.99 since the May rewrite. This review has been fully rewritten using verified primary sources. The original is preserved in our archive.

---

Google Gemini is Google's flagship AI assistant, currently running on the Gemini 3.1 Pro model and available in Australia with native AUD pricing across every paid tier. Of the five major AI assistants we test for Australian readers, Gemini has the strongest local fit by some distance — two Australian data centres (Sydney and Melbourne), IRAP certification, native AUD billing, and AI Plus at A$7.99/month, which is the cheapest fully featured paid AI assistant available to Australians as of May 2026\. If you already live inside Gmail, Docs, and Drive, Gemini slots in more naturally than any competitor.

## What it does well

**Native AUD pricing across the full ladder.** Plus, Pro and Ultra are all listed in Australian dollars on the Google account page, with the currency printed inside the figure — $7.99 AUD, $32.99 AUD, from $149.99 AUD a month. Google states **no tax position on that page at all**, so treat the figures as the consumer total and confirm the GST line on your invoice. No FX surprises, no surcharge surprises, and an actual local invoice your accountant can read.

**Australian data centres and IRAP certification.** Google has data centres in Sydney and Melbourne, and Gemini is IRAP certified. No other consumer-grade AI assistant in this lineup matches that combination on its standard plans.

**Workspace integration is class-leading.** Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, and Drive is genuinely useful — summarising threads, drafting replies, synthesising documents — without switching tabs or copying text. Plus-tier and above adds Gemini to Vids and several other Workspace apps.

**Developer features in AI Pro.** From A$32.99/month, the Pro plan includes Gemini Code Assist, the Gemini CLI, and Google Antigravity (Google's agentic developer platform). For developers and technical founders this is meaningful value at the price point.

**Search integration means current information.** Google's access to real-time search means Gemini is more reliably up-to-date on Australian businesses, news, and market context than models without live web access.

**The free tier is genuinely usable.** Gemini 3.6 Flash on the free plan handles a large share of everyday tasks. For many Australian readers, the free tier may be all you need.

## Watch out for

**Weaker than competitors for long-form writing.** Gemini is excellent for task-based work inside Google apps, but for generating long, polished standalone documents, ChatGPT and Claude tend to produce better output. Pair Gemini with one of those if writing is your main use case.

**The pricing jump from Plus to Pro is steep.** Plus at A$7.99/month covers most consumer needs. Pro at A$32.99/month is excellent value for developers and power users, but the jump may give pause to a small business owner who only needs a step up from Free.

**Ultra is pro-level territory.** AI Ultra now starts at A$149.99/month (rising to A$329.99 for the highest usage tier) and is genuinely high-end — agentic features, full Veo 3.1 video generation, and YouTube Premium included — but it's hard to justify for most Australian business users. Almost everyone reading this should be on Plus or Pro, not Ultra.

**Some Ultra-only features are US-only.** Deep Think and Gemini Agent are gated to Ultra and currently US-English only as of May 2026\. Australian users on Ultra are paying for some features they can't yet access.

**Privacy considerations apply.** Using Gemini inside Google Workspace means Google's standard data-handling policies apply. Workspace Enterprise plans offer data-region controls; consumer plans don't. Worth reviewing before using for sensitive commercial or client data.

**Value verdict:** AI Plus at A$7.99/month is the cheapest fully featured paid AI assistant available to Australians right now and represents excellent value. AI Pro at A$32.99/month is the right call for developers, technical founders, and power users — the Code Assist and Antigravity inclusion alone justify the step up. Ultra is power-user territory and very few readers will need it.

## Australian notes

- **Available in Australia:** Yes — full availability with native AUD pricing across all tiers
- **Pricing in AUD:** Yes — native AUD pricing on [gemini.google/au/subscriptions](https://gemini.google/au/subscriptions/?hl=en-AU&ref=theaidirectory.com.au). One of only two tools in this category (with Microsoft Copilot) that bills natively in AUD
- **GST:** Included in all listed AUD prices — no surprise GST at checkout
- **Data residency:** Two Australian data centres (Sydney and Melbourne). IRAP certified
- **Local support:** Google enterprise support available for Workspace customers. Consumer support is web-based
- **Local relevance:** Strong AU search awareness, native AUD billing, and Personal Intelligence available in Australia
- **Fair Work matters:** From **20 October 2026**, if you use Gemini to prepare an application, submission or witness statement for a Fair Work Commission case, you must disclose that use, verify every fact and authority yourself, and say in the document that you did ([fwc.gov.au/genai](https://www.fwc.gov.au/genai?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). The Commission names Gemini as an example of GenAI and says it is not a substitute for legal advice — see our [explainer](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/news-fwc-genai-disclosure-australia-2026/).
- **Fair Work matters — update 20 September 2026:** We have now read the Guidance Note itself. Paid plans are covered. The Commission's definition of "public GenAI" includes "both free and paid or subscription versions of ChatGPT, Claude, CoPilot and Gemini". A person must do the checking (para 31). You cannot ask Gemini, or any other AI tool, to verify what Gemini drafted. Using it only to check spelling or grammar, or to format a document, is out of scope (para 7). [Guidance Note PDF](https://www.fwc.gov.au/documents/resources/guidance-note-use-of-generative-ai-in-commission-cases.pdf?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)

## Best for

- **Google Workspace users** — if you live in Gmail and Docs, Gemini is the most natural AI fit
- **Budget-conscious Australians** who want a capable paid AI tool — AI Plus at A$7.99/month is the cheapest option in this category
- **Developers and technical founders** — AI Pro adds Code Assist, the Gemini CLI, and Antigravity for A$32.99/month
- **Australian businesses with data-sovereignty preferences** — Sydney/Melbourne data centres and IRAP certification matter

## Not great for

- **Deep document analysis** — Claude handles long, complex documents more reliably
- **Creative writing and nuanced long-form content** — ChatGPT and Claude produce stronger standalone written output
- **Microsoft 365 shops** — Copilot integrates far more naturally if your business runs on Teams and Office

## Alternatives worth considering

| App | Why you might prefer it |
| ----------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| ChatGPT | Broader feature set, voice mode, custom GPTs, stronger ecosystem |
| Claude | Superior for long-form professional writing and document analysis |
| Microsoft Copilot | Better choice if your business runs on Microsoft 365; IRAP PROTECTED |

## Our verdict

Google Gemini is the most AU-friendly AI assistant on the market — native AUD pricing across the full ladder, two Australian data centres, IRAP certified, and AI Plus at A$7.99/month is the cheapest paid entry point Australians have. For Google Workspace users, this is a no-brainer. For everyone else, it's still the best-value paid AI subscription in the category — particularly if you can live on AI Plus rather than stepping up to Pro. Pair it with Claude if you write long-form for a living. Otherwise, this is the assistant to start with.

Update history
- **21 Sep 2026 (currency attribution)** — **The “GST included” claim was attributed to a Google page that does not make it.** Verified today in a browser on an Australian connection, and again by a server-side fetch: `one.google.com/about/google-ai-plans/` renders **$7.99 AUD**, **$32.99 AUD** and **from $149.99 AUD** per month with the currency inside the figure — and contains **zero occurrences of “GST”, “tax” or “inclusive”**. The native-AUD half of our claim is solid. The GST half is not on that page, and this review said it was. **The claim is probably true** — a consumer price shown in Australia is normally the GST-inclusive total — **and that is precisely why it survived unchecked**. Probably true and sourced to the wrong place is still unsourced, which §15 forbids, and a reader who went to check would not have found it. Wording corrected throughout: the prices stand, the AUD claim stands, the attribution is removed, and the reader is told Google states no tax position and to confirm the GST line on the invoice. **No score changes** — Australian Fit rests on native AUD, the Sydney and Melbourne data centres and IRAP, none of which is in question. Also recorded from the same read: these plans bundle **Google Cloud credits denominated in US dollars** (USD 10 / 40 / 100 a month by tier) inside an AUD-priced plan — a benefit, not a price, so it is noted rather than converted. - **21 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 Currency verified by browser** — **native AUD, confirmed.** `gemini.google/au/subscriptions` renders the currency inside the figure: **$0 AUD**, **$7.99 AUD** (AI Plus), **$32.99 AUD** (AI Pro), **$149.99 AUD** and **$329.99 AUD** (Ultra tiers), with no strike-through on any (computed `textDecorationLine: none` throughout). Every figure in this review matches. One caveat worth stating: **neither Google page carries any GST or tax wording**, so where we say the AUD prices are GST-inclusive that is our reading of Australian consumer billing, not a vendor statement. `aud_native: true` set explicitly. No score change.
- **20 Sep 2026** — Pricing re-verified live on the Australian subscriptions page: **all AUD prices unchanged for the fourth consecutive check** — Free A$0 · AI Plus A$7.99 · AI Pro A$32.99 · AI Ultra from A$149.99, with A$329.99 for 20× AI Pro limits. The free tier still runs **Gemini 3.6 Flash** with varying access to 3.1 Pro, confirming the 2 September change from 3.5 Flash. Native AUD — no conversion. - **20 Sep 2026 🇦🇺** — Australia's app-store age checks became enforceable on 9 September 2026 and do not reach Gemini. The store gate covers only apps rated R18+. Worth knowing as a parent: nothing at the App Store or Google Play will stop a minor installing this one. The companion-chatbot half of eSafety's Age-Restricted Material Codes does not apply either. No score change. - **20 Sep 2026 🇦🇺** — Fair Work Commission Guidance Note (published 24 Aug 2026, commences 20 Oct 2026) read at primary; AU note extended with three details: "public GenAI" covers free and paid/subscription tiers of ChatGPT, Claude, CoPilot and Gemini (definitions); a person must do the checking and one AI tool cannot verify another's output (para 31); spelling, grammar and formatting use is out of scope (para 7). ## Frequently asked questions

### Is Google Gemini available in Australia?

Yes — full availability with native AUD pricing across every paid tier. Of the major AI assistants, Gemini has the strongest Australian fit by some distance.

### Does Gemini charge in AUD?

Yes. Plus, Pro and Ultra are all listed in AUD on the Australian Google account page, with no tax position stated — no FX surprises and an actual local invoice your accountant can read.

### Is there a free plan?

Yes, and it's genuinely usable. The free tier runs Gemini 3.6 Flash and handles a large share of everyday tasks — for many Australian readers it may be all you need.

### Is my data stored in Australia?

Google has data centres in Sydney and Melbourne, and Gemini is IRAP certified — no other consumer-grade AI assistant in this lineup matches that on standard plans. Note that consumer plans don't offer data-region controls (Workspace Enterprise does), so review before using for sensitive client data.

### Which plan should I buy?

AI Plus at A$7.99/month is the cheapest fully featured paid AI assistant available to Australians and suits most consumer needs. Step up to AI Pro at A$32.99/month for developer tools; almost no one needs Ultra.
