Head-to-head verdict

[**22**/25Google GeminiWinner](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/google-gemini-review-australia/)[**21**/25Claude AI](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/claude-ai-review-australia/)

**Our pick: Google Gemini.** The verdict below says who should buy the other.

> **Winner: Google Gemini** for most Australian readers. Native AUD billing from A$7.99/month, Sydney and Melbourne data centres, and IRAP certification — no other assistant matches that local package. **Pick Claude instead if your work lives in long documents** — contracts, reports, proposals — where it remains the stronger tool.

## What both tools actually do

Gemini and Claude are the two strongest challengers to ChatGPT available to Australians, and they take opposite routes there. Gemini is Google's flagship assistant, running Gemini 3.1 Pro on paid tiers. Its pitch is integration: it lives inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, sees the live web through Google Search, and bills in Australian dollars on an Australian invoice.

Claude is Anthropic's assistant, and the one most likely to surprise you if you've only used ChatGPT. It reads an entire contract or annual report properly rather than skimming the first pages. Its prose is less generic. And it flags uncertainty instead of bluffing — which matters when the stakes are real.

Both have genuinely usable free tiers. The question is which one deserves your money.

## Pricing in Australia

This comparison caught a fresh price move: as of 11 June 2026, Google's Australian subscriptions page lists **AI Plus at A$7.99/month** — down from the A$12.49 we verified in mid-May — and has restructured Ultra into **A$149.99 (5×) and A$329.99 (20×)** tiers \[Wayback snapshot TBC\]. AI Pro holds at A$32.99/month. All listed in AUD; Australian consumer pricing must include GST in the displayed price.

Claude's ladder moved to Australian dollars in September 2026: **Pro at A$28/month billed annually (A$340 up front) or A$34/month monthly**, Max from A$170.01, Team Standard at A$34/seat annually (A$43 monthly). Anthropic's pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST", so there is no exchange rate and nothing to add at checkout. Enterprise seats remain in US dollars \[Wayback cannot capture the geolocated AUD render — read live 19 September 2026\].

The arithmetic is still lopsided. Gemini's paid entry point is less than a third of Claude's, and both are now real Australian dollars on an invoice your accountant can read. Claude has closed the currency gap but not the price gap. On price alone, this contest is over.

## Where Gemini wins

- **Price, decisively.** A$7.99/month is the cheapest paid AI assistant an Australian can buy — and it's native AUD, GST included, no FX wobble.
- **Data sovereignty.** Sydney and Melbourne data centres plus IRAP certification, on standard plans. Claude's consumer data sits on US servers; residency options are Enterprise-only.
- **Workspace integration.** Summarising Gmail threads, drafting in Docs, synthesising Drive documents — no copy-paste, no tab-switching. If your business runs on Google, Gemini is simply where you already work.
- **Current information.** Live Search access keeps it reliably up to date on Australian businesses, news and market context. Claude has no equivalent.
- **Image generation.** Gemini makes images; Claude doesn't make any.

## Where Claude wins

- **Long documents.** Paste in a 90-page contract or an annual report and Claude actually reads it. This remains the single biggest practical gap between the two — and the reason document-heavy professionals pick Claude.
- **Professional writing.** Proposals, reports, client-facing communications — Claude's first drafts are consistently less generic and need less rework. Gemini is the weaker long-form writer of the two; our review said to pair it with Claude or ChatGPT if writing is your main use case.
- **Honesty under uncertainty.** Claude is noticeably less prone to confident wrong answers. For legal, finance or advisory work, that trait is worth real money.
- **Coding depth at the entry tier.** Claude Code ships with Pro at A$28–$34/month. Gemini’s developer kit (Code Assist, CLI, Antigravity) needs the A$32.99 Pro tier.
- **Local engagement, surprisingly.** Anthropic opened a Sydney office in March 2026, appointed an ANZ GM, signed an AI-safety MOU with the Australian Government, and counts Canva, Commonwealth Bank and Quantium as named customers. Australia ranks fourth globally on Claude.ai per-capita usage. It's not data residency — but it's a serious local posture.

## Which to pick — decision framework

- **Your business runs on Gmail and Google Docs** → Gemini. It's the natural fit and the cheapest paid tier in the category.
- **You read or produce long documents for a living** — legal, finance, consulting, property → Claude. Nothing else in this price range handles a full contract as well.
- **You handle data-sovereignty-sensitive material** on a standard plan → Gemini. Sydney/Melbourne residency and IRAP beat US servers, whatever the prose quality.
- **You write client-facing work daily** → Claude Pro annual at A$28/month, GST included.
- **You're budget-first and just want a capable paid assistant** → Gemini AI Plus at A$7.99\. There is no closer second at this price.
- **You genuinely need both** → Gemini AI Plus + Claude Pro annual totals about A$36/month — a little above what a single ChatGPT Plus subscription costs Australians.

## The verdict

For the default Australian reader — a small business owner who wants one capable, affordable AI assistant — **Gemini wins, and the June price cut widens the gap**. A$7.99/month in native AUD, Australian data centres, IRAP certification and class-leading Workspace integration is a local package nothing else matches. That's why it carries our top Australian Fit score (5/5) and the category's stronger overall score (22/25 vs 21/25).

But this is the rare comparison where the runner-up is the right answer for a large minority. If your working day is contracts, reports, research or serious prose, Claude is better at precisely those things, and its March 2026 Sydney expansion answered the "do they care about Australia?" question convincingly. 21/25 with a 4/5 Australian Fit is no consolation prize.

Unless your work is document-heavy or writing-led, pick Gemini. If it is, pick Claude — and treat the A$28/month as a professional tool, not a subscription.

Update history
- **20 Sep 2026** — **Claude closes the currency gap, not the price gap.** Anthropic's pricing page, as rendered to an Australian visitor on 19 September 2026, quotes Pro at **A$28/mo on annual billing (A$340 up front) or A$34 monthly** and Max **from A$170.01/mo**, and states "Prices include 10% GST". Now: Claude Pro A$28/mo annual (A$34 monthly), Max from A$170.01, Team Standard A$34/seat annual (A$43 monthly), all GST included; Gemini unchanged at A$7.99 AI Plus and A$32.99 AI Pro.
