- Description: OpenAI has switched off DALL-E 3. It left the API on 12 May 2026 and stopped being ChatGPT's image generator back in March 2025. Here's what replaced it and where Australians should go now.

If you still see "DALL-E 3" named in tutorials, social posts, or third-party tools and you're wondering whether to use it: don't. OpenAI has retired the model. There is no live, supported way to reach it through OpenAI anymore, and any new project built on its name is a dead end.

Here is what actually happened, and where Australians should go instead.

## What happened, and when

DALL-E 3 ended in two stages.

First, it lost its place in ChatGPT. On **25 March 2025**, OpenAI launched native image generation inside GPT-4o and made it the *default* image generator in ChatGPT for Free, Plus, Pro and Team users. From that day, when you asked ChatGPT for a picture, you were no longer using DALL-E 3 — you were using GPT-4o. OpenAI was blunt about the upgrade, calling the new system "significantly more capable than DALL·E 3," with better photorealism, image-to-image editing, and far more reliable text inside images.

Second, it left the developer side. OpenAI announced on **14 November 2025** that both `dall-e-2` and `dall-e-3` would be deprecated in the API, with the standard six-month notice. That window closed on **12 May 2026**, when the models were switched off. OpenAI's deprecations page now directs developers to `gpt-image-2`, `gpt-image-1`, or `gpt-image-1-mini` instead.

So as of today, 3 June 2026, DALL-E 3 is gone from both surfaces — the consumer app and the API. The name survives in a legacy "DALL·E" GPT and in third-party wrappers, but the product itself is retired.

## What replaced it

OpenAI's own replacement is its **GPT Image** line. Inside ChatGPT, that's the GPT-4o image generation built into a normal subscription. For developers, it's the `gpt-image` family of API models. If you specifically liked DALL-E 3's chat-and-refine workflow — describing an image in plain English and tweaking it by conversation — that workflow still exists. It's the same place (ChatGPT), just a newer, stronger model underneath.

The catch for Australians is unchanged from the DALL-E days: this is a US vendor with global processing. There's no native AUD billing, no Australian data-residency region, and no local support line. You'll pay a US-dollar card charge whether you use ChatGPT or the API. That's fine for plenty of small businesses — but worth knowing before you commit.

## What Australians should use instead

If you want an image generator we've actually put through our Australian-fit testing, these are the live options on the directory:

- **Leonardo AI** — an Australian-founded platform (now part of Canva) with deep control over style and consistency. The local angle is a genuine point of difference.
- **Recraft** — strong on vector output, brand kits, and design-system work, which suits anyone producing repeatable marketing assets rather than one-off pictures.
- **Stable Diffusion** — the open option. More setup, but maximum control and the ability to run it without sending prompts to a US consumer service.
- **Flux** — a capable newer model family worth a look if you want high-quality output and are comfortable working through a hosting provider.

For most non-technical Australian business owners, the honest shortcut is still the design tool you already pay for. If image generation lives inside Canva or Adobe alongside the rest of your work, that's usually a better starting point than standing up a separate AI image account.

## The bottom line

DALL-E 3 was a good model in its day — it was the one that finally got text-in-images and prompt-following right. But "its day" ended over a year ago, and the model is now switched off. If you want OpenAI's image generation, you'll get GPT Image inside ChatGPT or the API, billed in US dollars with no Australian hosting. If Australian fit matters more, start with Leonardo AI or a tool your business already runs.

We've left this note up as a signpost so nobody wastes an afternoon following a 2023 tutorial to a tool that no longer exists.
