Head-to-head verdict

[**15**/25Copy.aiWinner](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/copy-ai-review-australia-2026/)[**13**/25Writesonic](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/writesonic-review-australia-2026/)

**Our pick: Copy.ai.** The verdict below says who should buy the other.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

*Correction, 21 September 2026 — Copy.ai: the permanent free plan has been sunset by the vendor (“there is no longer a free plan (we had to sunset it)” — Copy.ai help centre, read 21 September 2026), and the US$1,000 Growth / US$2,000 Expansion / US$3,000 Scale tiers have been withdrawn from the published pricing page. A new Agents plan appears in Copy.ai's help centre at US$249/mo (about A$350 ex-GST) for up to 10 seats and 10,000 workflow credits. Copy.ai's score moves 16/25 → 15/25 (Value for Money 3 → 2, band ⭐⭐⭐⭐ → ⭐⭐⭐), which narrows but does not reverse this comparison's verdict. Copy.ai conversions below use USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rates, 18 September 2026). Writesonic's figures are unchanged and were not re-verified in this pass. See the* [*Copy.ai review*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/copy-ai-review-australia-2026/) *for the rebuilt table.*

> **Winner: Copy.ai** for the typical Australian small business — but by a narrower margin than when we first ran this. Both tools started as cheap AI writers and both have pivoted upmarket — Copy.ai into a go-to-market sales platform, Writesonic into an AI-search visibility engine. **Neither has a free plan any more:** Writesonic's disappeared first, and Copy.ai sunset its own in 2026\. What still decides it is the entry price — Copy.ai's Chat tier is US$29/mo (\~A$41 ex-GST) for five seats, against Writesonic's US$79/mo (\~A$111 ex-GST) floor for one. Copy.ai scores 15/25, Writesonic 13/25\. **Pick Writesonic only if you specifically want AI-search (GEO) tracking** built into the same tool that writes your articles. Both score Australian Fit 2/5, so neither is a category Top Pick.

If you signed up for an AI writing tool a couple of years ago, you may not recognise either of these now. Copy.ai and Writesonic both launched as cheap, cheerful copywriters — pick a template, type a few words, get a blog intro or ten ad variations. In 2026 both have rebuilt themselves into platforms aimed at marketing and sales teams, and both have raised their prices to match. The question for an Australian buyer is no longer "which writes better copy" — they're both fine for that. It's "which one still makes sense for a small business, and which has priced itself out of reach."

## What both tools actually do

Both still write. Underneath each platform is a capable AI writer that drafts blog posts, ad copy, product descriptions and long articles faster than you could by hand. Where they've diverged is the layer they've bolted on top — and that layer is now the headline pitch for each.

*Ownership note (6 September 2026): Copy.ai was acquired by Fullcast, a US revenue-operations company, on 15 October 2025 and is being positioned as "Fullcast Propel (powered by Copy.ai)". Its standalone product and pricing were unchanged when we re-checked on 6 September 2026, but the help centre has already moved to Fullcast's domain. Nothing in this comparison changes today; budget with the acquisition in mind. Detail in* [*our Copy.ai review*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/copy-ai-review-australia-2026/)*.*

**Copy.ai** calls itself "The First AI-Native GTM Platform" — GTM meaning go-to-market, the sales-and-marketing machinery of a business. Its four pieces are Chat (a ChatGPT-style prompting window with 90-plus templates), Workflows (multi-step chains that research a target account, find a contact and draft a personalised email, then repeat across a list), Brand Voice (stores your tone) and Infobase (a knowledge store so the AI stops inventing facts). It's model-agnostic — it routes to OpenAI's GPT, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini, and lets you pick per task. Its customer wall lists Siemens, Lenovo and ServiceNow, which tells you who it's built for now: enterprise revenue teams.

**Writesonic** calls itself "The AI Search Growth Engine". Its pitch is built around four jobs: Track (monitor how your brand appears across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot), Prioritise (an Action Center that ranks what to fix), Act (publish optimised content) and Prove (measure the change weeks later). The industry calls this GEO — generative engine optimisation, the AI-search cousin of SEO. The engine doing the writing is the AI Article Writer, which runs a multi-stage research-and-draft pipeline and returns a cited 3,000-word article with FAQs, schema and links in one pass.

In short: both are good writers. Copy.ai adds sales-team automation; Writesonic adds AI-search visibility tracking. Neither is the simple cheap writer it used to be, and which extra layer you actually need should drive the decision.

## Pricing in Australia

Neither tool bills in Australian dollars. Both charge in USD, and neither documents how it handles Australian GST. We convert at roughly 1.40 shown ex-GST to estimate the real AUD cost; treat the AUD figures as estimates that move with the exchange rate plus any card conversion fee.

**Copy.ai** is still the more forgiving line-up at the bottom, though less so than it was. The permanent free plan is gone — the vendor sunset it in 2026 — so the entry is the Chat plan at US$29/mo (\~A$41 ex-GST) for five seats, unlimited writing and model choice. The Workflows that are the entire 2026 pitch — the prospecting, the outreach automation — now start on the **Agents** plan at **US$249/mo (\~A$350 ex-GST)** for 10 seats, not the US$1,000 Growth plan we reported in June; Growth and everything above it has been withdrawn from the published pricing page. So the four-figure wall is gone, and so is the free way in.

**Writesonic** has moved the whole ladder upmarket. The entry Starter plan is US$79/mo (\~A$111 ex-GST) and tracks just one AI engine (ChatGPT). The real GEO capability — tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews — starts on Basic at US$199/mo (\~A$279 ex-GST), and the popular Growth plan is US$399/mo (\~A$559 ex-GST). There's a 7-day no-card trial, but we couldn't confirm a standing free plan on the vendor's pricing page or subscription docs — the old free tier appears to be gone.

The honest read: at the entry point Copy.ai is still cheaper — US$29 Chat for five seats beats Writesonic's US$79 floor for one. But that's not a like-for-like comparison — Copy.ai's cheap tier is *just writing*, while even Writesonic's cheap tier bundles some AI-search tracking. If all you want is to write, Copy.ai wins on price decisively. If you want the visibility tracking, the two are now much closer than they were: Writesonic's US$199 Basic against Copy.ai's US$249 Agents, where in June the gap was US$199 against US$1,000\. Neither offers a free way to find out.

## Where Copy.ai wins

- **Five seats at the entry price.** Chat is US$29/mo (\~A$41 ex-GST) for five people; Writesonic's US$79 floor buys one. Neither has a free plan any more — Copy.ai sunset its own in 2026 — so this is now the cheapest way for a small team to test either tool.
- **Model choice in one window.** Route the same task to GPT, Claude or Gemini and pick what works. Writesonic locks you to its own pipeline.
- **A clear "we don't train on your data" stance.** Stated plainly on its security page, with no prompt-sharing and no data-selling. Writesonic, by contrast, uses free-tier inputs to train its models per its privacy terms.
- **Cheaper to just write.** US$29/mo (\~A$41 ex-GST) for unlimited writing undercuts Writesonic's US$79 (\~A$111 ex-GST) floor by a wide margin.
- **The workflow tier is no longer out of reach.** Agents at US$249/mo (\~A$350 ex-GST) replaced the US$1,000 wall we reported in June, putting Copy.ai's automation within about US$50 of Writesonic's Basic plan.
- **Higher overall score.** 15/25 against Writesonic's 13/25 — better value at the bottom and stronger data-handling honesty. The margin narrowed in September 2026 when Copy.ai sunset its free plan.

## Where Writesonic wins

- **AI-search visibility tracking built in.** The GEO dashboard watches how often ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name your brand, your share of voice and the sentiment — a real, forward-looking feature Copy.ai doesn't offer at any price.
- **A true research-and-draft pipeline.** The AI Article Writer runs multiple stages and returns a cited, structured 3,000-word article in one pass, with FAQs, schema and links already in place — a genuine time-saver for SEO content.
- **The headline feature is still marginally cheaper.** Writesonic's marquee capability starts at US$199/mo (\~A$279 ex-GST); Copy.ai's Agents plan starts at US$249/mo (\~A$350 ex-GST). That was a US$800 gap in June and is now about US$50 — a real reason to prefer Writesonic then, a marginal one now.
- **SEO scaffolding out of the box.** Citations, schema markup and internal links come built into every article, saving manual SEO work.

## Which to pick — decision framework

- **You just want to write faster and spend little** → **Copy.ai**. Chat at US$29/mo (\~A$41 ex-GST) for five seats is the cheapest honest way in. There is no free plan on either side any more, so budget for the first month.
- **You want to know whether AI engines name your brand** → **Writesonic**. The GEO tracking is a real feature Copy.ai simply doesn't have.
- **You pump out long SEO articles** → **Writesonic**. The one-pass cited article pipeline is its strongest part.
- **You want model choice (GPT/Claude/Gemini) in one tool** → **Copy.ai**. Writesonic ties you to its own engine.
- **You run a sales team and want outreach automation** → **Copy.ai Agents** at US$249/mo (\~A$350 ex-GST) for 10 seats — a far easier case to make than the US$1,000 Growth plan this comparison originally pointed at. Anything larger is a quote.
- **You care that your data isn't used for training** → **Copy.ai**. It doesn't train on your data; Writesonic trains on free-tier inputs.
- **You want a free permanent tier** → **Copy.ai**. Writesonic no longer offers one.

## The verdict

**Winner: Copy.ai, for the typical Australian small business — on a narrower case than before.** Both tools have left their cheap-and-cheerful roots behind, and in 2026 both dropped their free plans. What Copy.ai still has is a fair US$29/mo (\~A$41 ex-GST) Chat tier that covers five people, model choice across GPT, Claude and Gemini, and a clean "we don't train on your data" position — where Writesonic charges US$79 for one seat and trains on free-tier inputs. At 15/25 against 13/25 it remains the better-value, more honest tool for someone who mainly wants to write, which is most readers of this site. But the gap closed on both ends this year, and neither tool now lets an Australian try it for nothing.

**Writesonic earns its 13/25, and its one clear reason to choose it is GEO.** If you specifically want to track how ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews talk about your brand — and want that in the same tool that drafts your long articles — Writesonic does something Copy.ai can't, and does it from US$199/mo (\~A$279 ex-GST). That used to undercut Copy.ai's automation by US$800; against the new US$249 Agents plan it undercuts it by about US$50, so the price argument for Writesonic is now much weaker than this comparison originally made it. Its floor has climbed to US$79 (\~A$111 ex-GST), its free plan has vanished, and free-tier inputs feed its training. For a small Australian business that just wants to write, it's the pricier, weaker-fit choice.

The honest framing: most Australians should start free on Copy.ai and stay there or on Chat. Reach for Writesonic only when AI-search visibility becomes a genuine, budgeted concern — and weigh it against a dedicated GEO monitor rather than assuming the bundled tool is the best one. Both bill offshore in USD with no GST invoice and no Australian data hosting, which is exactly why neither clears our Australian Fit bar.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are Copy.ai and Writesonic available in Australia?

Yes — both are web platforms open to Australian sign-ups with no regional lockout. Neither has an Australian office or local-hours support, and neither makes its outputs Australian by default — you'll need to set Australian English and context yourself.

### Do they charge in AUD?

No. Both bill in USD only. AUD figures are estimates at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB, 18 September 2026): Copy.ai's Chat plan is US$29/mo (\~A$41 ex-GST) and Writesonic's Starter is US$79/mo (\~A$111 ex-GST). Neither documents GST or issues an Australian tax invoice, so expect 10% GST added under ATO rules and check your invoice — you can generally claim it back if registered.

### Which is cheaper, Copy.ai or Writesonic?

Copy.ai — its Chat tier is US$29/mo (\~A$41 ex-GST) for five seats, where Writesonic's cheapest plan is US$79/mo (\~A$111 ex-GST) for one. Neither has a standing free tier: Writesonic dropped its first, and Copy.ai sunset its own in 2026\. Copy.ai's automation now starts at US$249/mo (\~A$350 ex-GST) on the Agents plan, close to Writesonic's US$199/mo (\~A$279 ex-GST) AI-search tracking.

### Which is better for AI-search (GEO) visibility?

Writesonic. Its GEO dashboard tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name your brand, your share of voice and sentiment — a feature Copy.ai doesn't offer at all. If that's your goal, Writesonic is the answer; if you just want to write, Copy.ai is the better-value tool.

### Will my data be used to train their models?

Copy.ai states it doesn't train on your data and doesn't share or sell prompts. Writesonic's privacy terms say it retains free-tier inputs, prompts and outputs to train its models; paid-tier treatment differs — confirm before uploading anything sensitive.
