Head-to-head verdict

[**21**/25Xero](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/xero-review-australia-2026/)[**20**/25Ignition](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/ignition-review-australia-2026/)

**No single winner.** The right choice depends on the job; the verdict below says who should buy which.

Put "Xero vs Ignition" into a search box and you'll get a misleading premise. These two are not really rivals. Xero is the accounting platform — the ledger your business and your accountant both live in. Ignition is the proposal-to-payment engine that turns a signed quote into money in the bank. One keeps the books; the other gets you paid. Plenty of Australian practices run both, and Ignition plugs straight into Xero.

So why compare them? Because the budget question is real. If you're a small business owner or a practice principal deciding where the next subscription dollar goes, you want to know which problem each tool solves, which is the genuinely AI one, and where each leaves you exposed. Here is the honest split — for Australians, in AUD, with GST treated properly.

## Quick look

Both reviews were last checked 2 June 2026\. We're citing those scores here, not re-scoring.

**Update — 2 Sep 2026:** Re-verified pricing against [xero.com/au](https://www.xero.com/au/pricing-plans/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) — the 1 July rise confirmed live; the Xero figures below are the current post-rise prices.

## What it costs in Australia

Both publish native AUD pricing, which already puts them ahead of most software we review. The catch is different for each: Xero's prices rose on 1 July 2026 (the figures below are the current, post-rise prices), and Ignition's real cost is the payment processing fees, not the subscription.

| Tool | Plan | AUD/month | GST basis | Who it suits |
| ------------ | ------------- | ------------------------------- | --------------------- | ----------------------------------------------- |
| **Xero** | Ignite | $37 (was $35 before 1 Jul 2026) | GST included | Sole traders; capped at 20 invoices/mo |
| **Xero** | Grow | $78 (was $75) | GST included | Growing businesses, unlimited invoicing |
| **Xero** | Comprehensive | $107 (was $100) | GST included | Established: payroll for 5, multi-currency |
| **Ignition** | Solo | $39 (ex GST → \~$43 inc.) | GST added at checkout | One-person practices under $200k revenue |
| **Ignition** | Core | $99 (ex GST → \~$109 inc.) | GST added at checkout | Bulk proposals, set-up help |
| **Ignition** | Pro | $249 (ex GST → \~$274 inc.) | GST added at checkout | Most practices land here; 15 users, 350 clients |

*Xero prices are stated GST-inclusive on its AU pricing page. Ignition lists prices excluding tax; the ex-GST figures shown are the listed price ex-GST for comparison. Both figures are AUD. Xero pricing re-verified against its live AU pricing page 2 September 2026; Ignition pricing as cited in our 2 June 2026 reviews.*

The number that catches Ignition buyers out isn't the subscription — it's the payment fees on every transaction: **1.95% + $0.30** on standard cards, **2.5% + $0.30** on premium cards (Amex, corporate), and **1% + $0.30 capped at $5** on direct debit. Steer clients to direct debit and Ignition is cheap; lean on Amex and it adds up fast. Xero's catch is simpler: every plan went up on 1 July 2026, and the multi-organisation discount was removed.

**Value verdict:** They're not substitutes, so "cheaper" is the wrong lens. Xero is fair value for a full accounting platform at roughly $78–$107/month for most businesses. Ignition pays for itself differently — in recovered fees and write-offs avoided, with the true cost set by your payment mix.

## What each one actually does

This is the heart of it. The two tools solve different problems, and the overlap is almost zero.

| | **Xero** | **Ignition** |
| -------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Invoicing & bank reconciliation | Yes — core | No (collects on invoices, doesn't keep the ledger) |
| GST tracking & BAS lodgement | Yes — native to the ATO | No |
| Payroll & Single Touch Payroll | Yes — native | No |
| Proposals & engagement letters | No | Yes — core |
| Automated billing & payment collection | Basic invoicing; payments via add-on | Yes — the whole point |
| The AI feature | JAX Chat (free now) | Price Insights ($399/yr add-on) |
| Replaces the other? | No — Ignition sits beside it | No — needs a ledger like Xero |

**On the AI, be clear-eyed about both.** Xero's JAX lets you ask your books a plain-English question — "show my gross profit trend" — and get a chart back, included at no extra cost right now. Its flagship "just done" auto bank reconciliation is still labelled Beta on Xero's own pricing page, and the bolder "superagent" vision is roadmap Xero explicitly says not to buy on. Ignition's one true AI feature is Price Insights, which benchmarks your prices against aggregated, anonymised proposal data and suggests an optimal price — genuinely useful for chronically under-charging Australian practices, but a paid add-on ($399/year for 200 insights), not part of the core plans. Strip it away and Ignition is excellent workflow automation, not AI.

So: today's most usable, no-extra-cost AI sits in Xero; the more decision-grade AI feature (pricing benchmarks) sits in Ignition but costs extra. Neither is a reason to switch ledgers, and neither replaces a human's judgement before anything reaches the ATO.

## Australian fit and data residency

Both score 5/5 on Australian Fit, and both earn it — so the Australian Fit gate (which caps a star rating or a category Top Pick when Australian Fit falls below 4/5) doesn't separate them here. Xero is trans-Tasman but its AU product is the deepest local fit in the category, with native ATO/BAS/STP and the largest accountant network in the country. Ignition is the genuinely Australian-founded option — Sydney, 2013 — with AU development, AEST support and AUD pricing.

The shared weakness is data residency. **Neither hosts your data onshore.** Xero's AU Privacy Notice contemplates processing in Australia, New Zealand and the United States; Ignition states its servers are in the USA. For most small businesses that's immaterial, but if you serve government or operate under strict data-sovereignty obligations, confirm your specific requirements with each vendor directly before you commit.

**Tax Practitioners Board guidance (final, 22 July 2026).** If a registered tax or BAS agent runs either tool's AI features on your file, the TPB's Guidance Statement TPB(GS) 55/2026 applies to the agent, not the software: they stay accountable for the accuracy of every output, must exercise their own judgement rather than rely on the AI, and must not put your information into an AI model without your permission and a clear answer on where the data is stored. Nothing here changes those obligations — and none of it replaces advice from a registered practitioner. [Our explainer of the guidance](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/news-tpb-ai-tax-practitioners-australia-2026/).

## Honest limitations

This comparison can't tell you your own payment mix or your data-sovereignty obligations — and both decide the answer. Xero's headline AI automation is still in beta and its prices rose on 1 July 2026; Ignition's "AI" is one paid add-on bolted onto an automation platform, and its real cost is the transaction fees, not the sticker price. Model both against your own numbers before you buy.

## Who should pick which

There's no single winner here, because they don't compete — but the data points to clear picks for each situation.

- **You need to run the books — invoicing, GST, BAS, payroll.** Buy **Xero**. This isn't close: it's the higher-scored tool (21/25), the AU accounting default, and Ignition can't keep a ledger. For most Australian small businesses, Xero is the answer to "what accounting software should I use?"
- **You run a practice and your pain is the commercial side — proposals, billing, chasing debtors.** Buy **Ignition**. It turns "yes" into "paid" without manual invoicing, and on direct debit the fees are genuinely cheap. Xero won't solve this problem; Ignition was built for exactly it.
- **You're a growing accounting or bookkeeping practice.** Buy **both**. This is the intended setup. Xero is the ledger; Ignition sits on top, syncs invoices back, and kills your accounts-receivable headache. They're complements, and the pair is more than the sum.
- **You want the most usable AI today at no extra cost.** Edge to **Xero** — JAX Chat is included and useful now. If it's pricing confidence you're after, Ignition's Price Insights is the more decision-grade tool, but budget the $399/year.

The bottom line: if you can only buy one and you don't yet have accounting software, start with **Xero**. If you already have a ledger and you're leaking revenue through slow billing, add **Ignition**. Most established practices end up running both — and that's the right answer, not a cop-out.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which is better for Australians?

They don't really compete. Xero (21/25) is the accounting ledger — invoicing, GST, BAS, payroll. Ignition (20/25) is the proposal-to-payment engine that gets practices paid. Both score 5/5 on Australian Fit. If you only buy one and have no accounting software, start with Xero.

### Which is cheaper in AUD?

Different jobs, so "cheaper" misleads. Xero runs roughly $78–$107/month for most businesses, following its 1 July 2026 price rise. Ignition's subscription is from $39/month plus GST, but its real cost is the per-transaction payment fees (1.95% + $0.30 standard, cheaper on direct debit).

### Do both bill in AUD with GST?

Yes — both publish native AUD pricing, which puts them ahead of most software. Xero's prices are stated GST-inclusive; Ignition lists ex-GST and adds 10% at checkout.

### Can I use both?

Yes, and growing practices should — it's the intended setup. Xero is the ledger; Ignition sits on top, syncs invoices back, and kills your accounts-receivable headache.

### Do they store data in Australia?

No — neither hosts onshore. Xero processes data in Australia, New Zealand and the US; Ignition's servers are in the USA. Immaterial for most small businesses, but confirm with each vendor if you have strict data-sovereignty obligations.
