Head-to-head verdict

[**18**/25Recraft](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/recraft-review-australia-2026/)[**17**/25Kittl](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-kittl-australia-2026/)

**No single winner.** The right choice depends on the job; the verdict below says who should buy which.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Winner: it depends on what you actually make.** **Pick Recraft** if you are a designer or founder who needs *generation* — real, editable vector logos, icons and illustrations that export as clean SVGs. It does the one hard thing in this category better than anyone, and its model ranks among the world's best. **Pick Kittl** if you are a small-brand owner or merch seller who wants AI *inside* a familiar design editor — templates, typography, t-shirt mockups — without learning a generator. Recraft scores 18/25 (Australian Fit 2/5); Kittl scores 17/25 (Australian Fit 3/5). Neither clears our Australian Fit gate, so neither is a category Top Pick.

These two tools both live in Design & Creative, but they answer different questions. Recraft answers "can an AI generate me a real, editable logo?" Kittl answers "can I lay out a t-shirt graphic, with AI helping, in a tool I won't fear?" One is an engine. The other is a studio with an engine bolted in. Get the question right and the choice is easy. Get it wrong and you'll either fight a bare generation tool that has no page layout, or wait for a design editor to make a vector it was never built to make.

Both are also offshore tools that bill in US dollars and host your work overseas. For an Australian buyer the trade-offs are real, and they're a big part of why neither earns five stars.

## What each one actually is

The cleanest way to understand these tools is to watch where the work starts.

In **Recraft**, you start by typing a prompt. It is a generation engine first. Ask for a logo, an icon set or an illustration, and the model makes it. What justifies Recraft over every other generator is the output: **true vector graphics** — editable SVGs with separated shapes you can open in Illustrator or Figma, scale and recolour, not a flat PNG that turns to mush when enlarged. A brand-style feature, mockups and a small editing suite sit around it, but the centre of gravity is generation. Our Recraft review scores it **18/25 (Very Good)** and calls it "the standout" for anyone making brand assets.

In **Kittl**, you start on a canvas. It is a design studio first — a browser editor between Canva and Illustrator, leaning hard into typography, vintage badges and merch graphics. The AI is a set of features *inside* that editor: text-to-image, text-to-vector, background removal, an upscaler, an auto-vectoriser. Crucially, Kittl runs no model of its own. It routes to third-party engines — FLUX, Google Imagen, Ideogram, OpenAI's image model — and lets you pick one per job. Our Kittl review scores it **17/25 (Very Good)** and calls it "one of the better browser-based design studios" for logos, merch and poster typography.

So: Recraft generates and hands you a file. Kittl generates, then keeps you in the editor to lay it out, set the type and drop it on a mockup. That difference is the whole comparison.

## What it costs in Australia

Recraft prices in **US dollars**; Kittl now shows Australian visitors **native AUD prices** (re-read 29 September 2026 — this comparison originally treated both as USD). Recraft's AUD figures are an approximate conversion at AUD ≈ 1.40 × USD; Kittl's are its own. Read the GST notes carefully — they differ.

| Plan | Recraft (USD) | Recraft ≈ AUD | Kittl (vendor) | Kittl AUD |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------ | ------------- | ------------------------------------------------ | --------- |
| **Free** | $0 — 30 credits/day, but public + non-commercial | $0 | A$0 — 100 tokens one-time, no commercial licence | A$0 |
| **Entry paid (monthly)** | $12/mo Basic, 1,000 credits | ≈ $17/mo | A$25/mo Pro | A$25/mo |
| **Entry paid (annual)** | $10/mo ($120/yr) Basic | ≈ $14/mo | A$17/mo Pro, billed annually | A$17/mo |
| **Next tier up** | $20/mo+ Pro (2,000–16,000 credits) | ≈ $28/mo+ | A$50/mo Expert (annual A$38) | A$50/mo |

*Recraft prices from Recraft's paid-plans docs (USD; annual saves \~20%); Kittl prices from Kittl's pricing page as shown in Australia (AUD; annual about a third cheaper than monthly). Both verified at the dates in Sources. GST: Recraft's Terms say fees exclude tax and it "may invoice you for such Taxes" — so GST lands at checkout, not on the sticker. Kittl does not say whether its A$ prices include GST; as an over-threshold imported digital service it is the kind of provider expected to charge 10% GST, so confirm the line on your own invoice.*

A few things matter here. Recraft runs a **credit** system: a raster image, a vector and an upscale each cost different amounts, credits don't roll over, and you can buy top-ups that never expire. Kittl runs an **AI-token** system: every AI action spends tokens, a single generation costs more than one, and heavy AI users get nudged toward the A$50/mo Expert tier fast. Neither is a flat "unlimited" plan, so neither is perfectly predictable.

On the free tiers, neither is a workhorse. Recraft's free generations are **public** in the community gallery, carry no commercial rights, and may be used to train its models. Kittl's free tier caps exports at 800px and 72 DPI with no commercial licence and a forced Kittl credit. Both are try-before-you-buy, not free working tools.

On headline cost, Recraft's Basic is the cheaper way in — roughly A$14–17 a month against Kittl's A$17–25 for Pro. But the comparison isn't quite like-for-like: Kittl's Pro buys you a whole editor and a 500,000-copy commercial licence; Recraft's Basic buys you a generation engine and the files it makes.

## Feature diff: engine versus studio

Where they overlap is generation. Where they diverge is everything around it.

**Vector quality.** Recraft wins outright. Its true SVG output — clean, separated, editable paths — is the best in the category, and almost no rival matches it. Kittl can vectorise an image too, via its auto-vectoriser, and the result is useful for badge and merch work. But Recraft's vectors are why designers reach for it; Kittl's are a convenience inside a wider workflow.

**Text and typography.** This splits cleanly. Recraft is unusually good at rendering **readable text inside a generated image**, where other generators produce gibberish. Kittl is the king of **editable typography**: 1,400+ licensed fonts, real OpenType controls, ligatures, and the curve-and-warp tools vintage-badge lettering depends on. Want AI to *draw* text into a poster? Recraft. Want to *set* type yourself with proper controls? Kittl.

**Layout, templates and workflow.** No contest — Kittl wins, because Recraft barely competes. Kittl gives you an infinite canvas, a deep template library, and a chained workflow: generate, vectorise, remove the background, drop it on a t-shirt mockup, all in one tab. Recraft hands you generated assets to take elsewhere and compose. For a small-brand owner who wants to start from a template and tweak, that's the whole appeal.

**The model.** Recraft runs its own engine, Recraft V4.1, top five on the public Artificial Analysis Image Arena — the highest-ranked text-to-image model outside Google and OpenAI. Kittl runs no model of its own. Smart design, but it means Kittl's generation quality is borrowed, not built.

In short: Recraft is the better *generator*; Kittl is the better *design tool*. Each wins the half of the workflow it was built for.

## Australian fit

This is where both tools lose points, and it's why neither wears five stars. Recraft scores **Australian Fit 2/5** and Kittl **3/5** in our reviews (Kittl rose from 2/5 on 29 September 2026, when we found it prices in AUD for Australians).

**Billing and currency.** Recraft bills in USD, so you carry exchange-rate risk every month; its Basic at US$12 lands near A$17\. Kittl shows Australians A$ prices, so there is no conversion: Pro is A$25 a month, or A$17 on annual billing. On price alone the two entry plans now land close together, and Kittl's is the one that doesn't move with the dollar.

**GST.** Recraft's Terms state fees exclude taxes and that it may invoice tax — so GST is added at checkout rather than shown up front. Kittl doesn't say whether its A$ prices include GST; as an over-threshold imported digital service it's the kind of provider the ATO's rules expect to charge 10% GST, but it's unconfirmed. Either way, if you're GST-registered, download the invoice and check it carries an ABN and a separate GST line before you rely on it for your BAS. Don't assume.

**Data residency.** Recraft is more transparent here, even though the answer isn't AU-friendly: it hosts on Azure in the US, replicated US-region to US-region, with no Australian region and no IRAP or ISO 27001 advertised. Kittl is worse on disclosure — a German company that publishes no Australian, or even named-region, data-residency, server-location or sub-processor list on its public legal pages. With Kittl you don't even know where your designs sit. For logos and merch art that's lower-stakes than client tax files, but it still counts.

**Support.** Neither has an Australian presence. Recraft is docs-and-channel, with 24/7 support reserved for its Teams plan. Kittl is online-only with no AU hours and no published uptime or SLA we could assess. If you want a local human, neither tool has one.

**The privacy trap.** Recraft's free tier trains on your images and makes them public — you must pay (and, on Pro, actively opt out) to keep work private. Kittl's free tier is simply too crippled to use. On both, "free" is not the same as "yours to keep quietly."

The honest read: both are offshore tools you pay for in a foreign currency with your assets hosted overseas. Recraft is the more transparent of the two and the cheaper to run, but neither serves an Australian as well as a native-AUD local-billing tool would. That's the Australian Fit gate doing its job — a tool that doesn't serve Australians well can't be crowned a category Top Pick, regardless of its raw score.

## Who should buy which

**Buy Recraft if** your actual job is *generation* — making logos, icon sets, editable illustrations and brand assets that need to export as clean, scalable SVGs. If you'd otherwise pay a designer to draw a vector logo, Recraft is the standout, its model is independently ranked among the world's best, and at US$12/month (≈ A$17) it's the cheaper entry point. Designers, illustrators and founders building a brand asset library should start here. Just go in clear-eyed on the USD billing and US hosting, and never do real work on the free tier.

**Buy Kittl if** you're a small-brand owner, merch seller or print-on-demand operator who wants AI *inside a design editor you can actually use*. If your day is laying out t-shirt graphics, vintage badges, labels and poster typography — starting from templates, setting type with real controls, dropping art on mockups — Kittl is built for exactly that, and the AI features speed it up rather than replacing the editor. At A$17 a month on annual billing, the Pro plan with its 500,000-copy commercial licence earns its keep for anyone selling what they make.

**Buy neither if** you want GST shown up front, Australian data hosting and local support. For that, our Kittl review points small businesses to Canva (AUD billing, AU presence, the better all-rounder), and our design roundup covers the local-fit options. Both Recraft and Kittl are good tools that ask you to wear an offshore trade-off.

## The verdict

There's no single winner here, because Recraft and Kittl aren't really competing — they're each the best answer to a different question. If you need an AI to *make a vector*, Recraft (18/25) is the clearer tool and the cheaper one, and it does the genuinely hard thing better than anyone. If you need AI *inside a design studio* for merch and branding, Kittl (17/25) gives you the editor, the typography and the templates that Recraft simply doesn't have.

The one-point gap in our scores reflects that Recraft does its one core job better and discloses more about where your data lives. But neither clears the Australian Fit gate, so neither is a category Top Pick. For the typical Australian buyer the deciding question is simple: are you generating assets, or designing layouts? Answer that, and the tool picks itself.

We'll refresh this if either adds AUD billing or an Australian data region.

Update history
- **29 Sep 2026** — **Kittl prices Australians in AUD; this comparison had treated both tools as USD.** Read on Kittl's pricing page from an Australian connection. Was: "Kittl US$15/mo (\~A$21) Pro monthly; US$10/mo (\~A$14) Pro annual; billing USD only", free tier "one-time grant, 800px, no licence". Now: Pro **A$25/mo monthly or A$17/mo annual**, Expert A$50 (A$38 annual), a new Max tier at A$95 (A$71 annual), free tier 100 tokens one-time with no commercial licence; GST inclusion not stated. Kittl's review was re-scored **16 → 17/25 (Australian Fit 2 → 3)** and the score cells, excerpt and the "charge in AUD?" FAQ here were synced. Recraft unchanged and USD-only: Basic US$12/mo (\~A$17), US$10 annual.

## Frequently asked questions

### Recraft or Kittl for an Australian designer?

Recraft if your job is generation — making logos, icons and editable SVG illustrations. It produces true vector output better than anyone and its model ranks among the world's best, from US$12/month (about A$17). Kittl if you want AI inside a design editor for merch, badges and typography. Recraft scores 18/25; Kittl 17/25.

### Do Recraft and Kittl charge in AUD?

Kittl does; Recraft doesn't. Kittl shows Australian visitors AUD prices — Pro is A$25 a month, or A$17 on annual billing. Recraft bills in US dollars, so Basic at US$12/month lands near A$17 and moves with the exchange rate. Recraft adds GST at checkout; Kittl doesn't say whether its A$ prices include GST, so check the line on your invoice before relying on it for your BAS.

### Which has better vector output, Recraft or Kittl?

Recraft. Its true SVG output — clean, separated, editable paths you can open in Illustrator or Figma — is the best in the category. Kittl can vectorise images via its auto-vectoriser, which is useful for badge and merch work, but Recraft's vectors are why designers reach for it.

### Where is my data stored with Recraft and Kittl?

Neither hosts in Australia. Recraft discloses US hosting on Azure with no AU region. Kittl, a German company, publishes no Australian or even named-region data-residency or server-location information, so the hosting region is undisclosed. For logos and merch art that's lower-stakes than client tax files, but go in knowing it.

### Is either Recraft or Kittl a category Top Pick for Australia?

No. Recraft scores Australian Fit 2/5 and Kittl 3/5 in our reviews, and under our Australian Fit gate a category Top Pick requires Australian Fit of at least 4/5\. Both remain Very Good tools (Recraft 18/25, Kittl 17/25) and are recommended for the right buyer, but neither can be crowned the category winner on current Australian fit.
