Head-to-head verdict

[**21**/25Microsoft Power AutomateWinner](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/power-automate-review-australia-2026/)[**21**/25n8n](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/n8n-review-australia-2026/)

**Our pick: Microsoft Power Automate.** The verdict below says who should buy the other.

> **Winner: Power Automate** for the typical Australian business already paying for Microsoft 365\. It keeps data onshore by default, bills in AUD, and starts at no extra cost. **n8n wins** if you're technical and outside the Microsoft stack. Self-host it in an Australian cloud region and your data never leaves the country. Skip n8n if "deploy via Docker" means nothing to you.

Both tools scored 21/25 in our full reviews, with Australian Fit at 4/5 each. A tie on paper. In practice, the right pick depends almost entirely on what your business already runs.

## What both tools actually do

Both are workflow automation platforms. They move data between your apps without you writing glue code. A trigger fires — a new invoice, an inbound email, a schedule. Actions follow: save the attachment, create the CRM deal, post to the team channel.

**Power Automate** is Microsoft's entry, part of the Power Platform alongside Power Apps and Power BI. It does cloud flows (API-based, Zapier-style) and desktop RPA flows that drive legacy software by clicking its interface. Both tools offer 1,000+ connectors or integrations.

**n8n** is built by n8n GmbH in Berlin. It is a node-and-canvas builder: you wire triggers, logic and actions together visually, with code nodes when the canvas runs out. One correction to the common pitch — n8n is **source-available under its Sustainable Use Licence, not OSI open-source**. You can still self-host it free, forever, for internal business use. That self-hosting option is the hinge this whole comparison turns on.

## Pricing in Australia

The two vendors could not bill more differently. State of play, with GST basis spelled out.

**Power Automate** publishes AUD prices on Microsoft's Australian site, with GST shown separately and an ABN tax invoice issued. Standard-connector flows (Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, Excel) cost nothing extra on most Microsoft 365 business licences. **Premium is A$22.40 per user per month, billed yearly, ex GST — GST is added at checkout.** RPA is dearer: Process runs A$224.50 per bot per month and Hosted Process A$321.80 per bot per month, both ex GST with GST added.

**n8n** has a genuinely free path: the self-hosted Community Edition, with no per-execution charge at all. You pay only for your server. Paid plans are billed in **euros, with no AUD option**. Cloud Starter is EUR 20 per month billed annually — about A$32 at \~1.40 EUR-to-AUD. Cloud Pro is EUR 50 ≈ A$80 per month. Licensed self-hosted Business is EUR 667 ≈ A$1,074 per month. **n8n does not document its GST or ABN tax-invoice treatment — confirm at checkout and keep the invoice for your BAS.** Month-to-month Cloud billing runs about 17% dearer than annual.

The metering models matter more than the list prices. Power Automate counts **every action** — each connector call, loop iteration and retry burns a Power Platform Request. Premium users hit a 40,000-requests-per-day ceiling, and the penalty is throttling: flows slow or stop. A loop over 500 rows calling three connectors chews 1,500+ requests in one run. n8n counts **whole-workflow executions** — a 30-step automation costs the same one execution as a 2-step one. But Cloud allowances are tight — Starter gives you 2,500 executions a month. Overage comes in blunt buckets, like EUR 4,000 for an extra 300,000 executions on Business.

For multi-step, loop-heavy automation, n8n's metering is materially fairer. Self-hosted, it has no meter at all.

## Where Power Automate wins

- **Onshore data residency with zero effort.** Cloud flows for Australian-home tenants run in Microsoft's Australia East and Southeast datacentres. No server, no DevOps — residency is the default, not a project. n8n only matches this if you self-host.
- **AUD billing done properly.** Published AUD prices, GST shown separately, ABN tax invoice. n8n bills in euros with undocumented GST handling.
- **The free tier most businesses already own.** If you pay for Microsoft 365, standard-connector automation costs nothing more. Day one, zero spend.
- **Easier for non-technical operators.** Copilot builds, edits and explains flows from plain-English prompts, with multi-turn conversation. n8n's node canvas expects you to handle JSON and expressions.
- **RPA for legacy software.** Desktop flows automate old line-of-business apps with no API. n8n has no equivalent.
- **Mature, governed AI.** AI Builder handles invoice OCR, classification and GPT-powered text generation on Azure OpenAI, inside Microsoft's enterprise data-handling terms.

## Where n8n wins

- **True data sovereignty.** Self-host in AWS Sydney or Azure Australia East and every execution, credential and byte stays onshore — on infrastructure you control. Power Automate is SaaS only; even its on-premises gateway leaves execution in Azure.
- **Unbeatable value at the floor.** The Community Edition is free with unlimited executions. Power Automate's "free with M365" collapses the moment you touch a premium connector like Xero, HubSpot, SQL or HTTP.
- **Fairer metering.** One run is one execution, however many steps. No per-action meter quietly throttling your loop-heavy flows.
- **Native Xero and HubSpot nodes.** Power Automate's Xero connector is third-party (Magnetism), premium-gated, and needs a separate licence. n8n ships its own.
- **Provider-agnostic AI agents — including fully onshore AI.** n8n's LangChain nodes run OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and, crucially, local models via Ollama. Self-hosted n8n plus Ollama means AI automation with no data leaving Australia. Power Automate ties you to Azure OpenAI.
- **Predictable scaling cost.** A$0 forever self-hosted, versus per-user pricing that grows with headcount.

Neither tool has a first-party MYOB connector. Both reach MYOB only via HTTP-API plumbing or community/third-party workarounds — budget for build effort either way.

## Which to pick — decision framework

**If your business runs on Microsoft 365, pick Power Automate.** You already own the entry tier. Your data sits in Australian datacentres without you touching a server. Design lean flows and watch the per-action meter.

**If onshore data is a hard compliance requirement and you're not a Microsoft shop, pick self-hosted n8n.** It is the only option here that puts the engine itself on Australian infrastructure you control.

**If you're non-technical and outside Microsoft 365, pick neither yet.** n8n Cloud puts your data in Frankfurt and bills in euros. Power Automate without M365 loses most of its bundled value. **If you want AI agents on local models, or run loop-heavy flows, pick n8n.** The Ollama option and execution-based metering are decisive there.

## The verdict

**Winner: Power Automate** — for the default reader of this publication. Most Australian small businesses already pay for Microsoft 365\. For them, Power Automate is bundled, onshore by default, AUD-billed with a proper ABN tax invoice, and Copilot-assisted. That is the lowest-friction path to useful automation in this market. Go in clear-eyed about the per-action meter and the premium-connector gate. The "free" impression ends when you connect anything that actually runs your business.

**n8n takes the per-use-case win for sovereignty and value.** If you have technical capability — an in-house developer or a consultant on retainer — self-hosted n8n is the stronger tool. It is free at the floor, fairer on metering, and native to Xero and HubSpot. It is also the only pick that keeps your data and AI models entirely onshore. Both tools earned 21/25 with Australian Fit at 4/5\. The tie-breaker is your stack, not the scoreboard. Unless you can run a server and live outside the Microsoft tent, pick Power Automate.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Power Automate or n8n better for Australian businesses?

Power Automate, for most. If your business already pays for Microsoft 365, it is bundled, onshore by default in Australian Azure regions, and billed in AUD. n8n wins if you are technical and outside the Microsoft stack — self-host it in an Australian cloud region and your data never leaves the country. Both scored 21/25.

### How much do Power Automate and n8n cost in Australia?

Power Automate is A$0 with most Microsoft 365 business licences; Premium costs A$22.40 per user per month, billed yearly, ex GST. n8n's self-hosted Community Edition is free with unlimited executions. n8n Cloud Starter is EUR 20 per month billed annually — about A$32 — with GST treatment undocumented. Power Automate publishes AUD prices with an ABN tax invoice.

### Does Power Automate or n8n keep data in Australia?

Power Automate does, by default. Cloud flows for Australian-home tenants run in Microsoft's Australia East and Southeast datacentres — no setup needed. n8n Cloud stores data in Frankfurt, EU only. But self-hosted n8n can run in AWS Sydney or Azure Australia East, keeping every execution and credential onshore on infrastructure you control.

### Which connects better to Xero — Power Automate or n8n?

n8n. It ships a native Xero node, plus native HubSpot. Power Automate's Xero connector is third-party (Magnetism), premium-gated, and needs a separate licence. Neither tool has a first-party MYOB connector — both reach MYOB only via HTTP-API plumbing or workarounds, so budget for build effort either way.

### How did Power Automate and n8n score in your reviews?

Both scored 21/25, with Australian Fit at 4/5 each — a tie on paper. The tie-breaker is your stack, not the scoreboard. Power Automate takes the overall win for the typical Microsoft 365 business; n8n takes the per-use-case win for sovereignty and value if you can run a server.
