Head-to-head verdict

[**17**/25Intercom Fin AIWinner](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/intercom-fin-ai-review-australia/)[Sierra](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/compare-intercom-fin-ai-vs-sierra-australia/)

**Our pick: Intercom Fin AI.** The verdict below says who should buy the other.

**By Adam**

> **Winner: Intercom Fin AI** for the typical Australian buyer — almost anyone who isn't a Fortune-50-scale enterprise. It bolts a capable resolution bot onto an inbox you can sign up for today, at a price you can start testing for the cost of a 14-day trial. Sierra is the better *agent*, but it's sales-led, six figures a year, and built for organisations Sierra chooses to take on. Pick Sierra only if the AI agent is becoming your support operation, not an add-on to it.

These two tools answer the same question — "can AI resolve my customers' queries without a human?" — from opposite ends of the market.

Intercom Fin AI is a feature you switch on inside a help desk you may already run. Sierra is a company you hire to build you an agent. That difference governs everything below: the price, the effort, the contract, and who each one is actually for.

We've reviewed both. Fin scored **17/25 (Very Good)**; Sierra scored **14/25 (Good)**. The gap isn't about which is the cleverer piece of software — Sierra arguably is. It's about which one an Australian buyer can actually buy, budget, and deploy. This piece is about choosing between them, not re-scoring them.

## What both tools actually do

Both promise the same outcome: a customer asks a question, the AI answers it well enough that no human gets involved, and your team only sees the hard cases.

**Fin** sits on top of Intercom's messenger and help desk. You point it at your existing content — help articles, FAQs, PDFs — and it composes conversational answers rather than pasting a link. When it isn't confident, it escalates to a human agent. Intercom cites resolution rates up to 65% (from a customer testimonial), though your real number depends entirely on how good your help content is. Out of the box Fin answers questions; making it *take actions* — issue a refund, update an account — needs custom integrations.

**Sierra** is built to do the whole job. A Sierra agent is wired into your back-end systems — order management, CRM, billing — so it can process the return, save the cancellation, change the booking, and resolve the conversation end to end, within guardrails your business sets. It's not a bot you configure in an afternoon; it's an implementation you stand up with Sierra's team. Co-founded in 2023 by Bret Taylor (ex-Salesforce co-CEO, OpenAI board chair) and Clay Bavor, Sierra has Fortune 50 customers and a roughly US$15.8 billion valuation. It is the category benchmark — for the organisations it's built for.

The simplest framing: Fin is the resolution bot you bolt onto your inbox. Sierra is the autonomous agent you build your support operation around.

## Pricing in Australia

This is where the two genuinely diverge, and where Australian buyers need to do the maths.

**Fin** is published and self-serve. Base plans run Essential US$29, Advanced US$85, and Expert US$132 per seat per month (roughly A$41, A$119 and A$185 at USD→AUD 1.4045, ECB reference rate 18 September 2026, ex-GST). On top of that sits the part that catches people out: **US$0.99 per autonomous resolution** — about A$1.39 — with a 50-resolution monthly minimum. That fee is charged every time Fin resolves a query, on top of your seat fee.

The trap is volume. On Fin's claimed 50% resolution rate, a team fielding 1,000 tickets a month pays around A$695 in resolution fees alone, plus the base plan. At 2,000 tickets it's about A$1,390 a month in fees. Predictable if your volume is flat; a budgeting hazard if a billing bug or a product launch spikes your support load. Intercom's pricing page lists USD only, so confirm AUD billing, GST treatment and any spend cap with their sales team before you commit. (Full volume tables are in our [Intercom Fin AI review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/intercom-fin-ai-review-australia/).)

**Sierra** doesn't publish a price at all. It uses **outcome-based pricing**: you pay when the agent achieves a defined successful outcome, not per seat or per message. Unresolved queries and human escalations typically don't trigger a charge. It's a genuinely fairer model in theory — the vendor only wins when you do.

The catch is the floor. There's no free tier, no self-serve sign-up, and no AUD price list. Independent reporting puts typical contracts at **US$150,000 to US$350,000-plus a year** — roughly A$211,000 to A$492,000-plus. You negotiate the currency, the GST treatment, the data terms, and crucially the *definition* of a "resolved outcome", because that definition is the whole pricing model and it lives in your contract.

So: Fin is a tool you can start testing this afternoon for the price of a trial. Sierra is a procurement project with a six-figure annual commitment. For most readers, that single fact settles it.

## Where Fin wins

- **You can actually buy it.** Self-serve sign-up, published pricing, a 14-day free trial with no credit card. You can have it answering customers this week.
- **It's the easy add-on if you're already on Intercom.** No migration, no new platform. Switch it on, point it at your help centre, set escalation rules — a non-technical team can deploy in a day.
- **The cost scales down as well as up.** A small team paying for 50–200 resolutions a month spends hundreds, not hundreds of thousands. Sierra has no equivalent entry point.
- **Broad integrations out of the box.** Shopify, Salesforce, HubSpot and more via Intercom's library — strong for e-commerce order queries in particular.
- **Established reliability.** Intercom is a mature platform with a solid uptime history and responsive support, reflected in Fin's 4/5 for Reliability & Support.

## Where Sierra wins

- **It resolves, it doesn't just respond.** Agents complete the task across your systems — process the refund, change the booking — where Fin out of the box answers the question and needs custom work to act.
- **Outcome-based pricing aligns incentives.** You pay for results delivered, not seats filled or messages sent. At enterprise scale, that maths can beat per-resolution fees.
- **Built for brand and guardrail control at scale.** Designed for large brands that need the AI on-message and compliant across thousands of simultaneous conversations.
- **Serious pedigree and proven deployments.** Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor, named Fortune 50 customers, a US$15.8B valuation. It sets the direction the whole category is following.
- **Depth.** Sierra's 4/5 for Feature Depth reflects genuinely agentic behaviour that the bolt-on tools are still chasing.

## Which to pick — decision framework

- **If you already run Intercom** — Fin, almost without thinking about it. It's the lowest-friction way to add AI resolution to a stack you've already paid for. Just run the per-resolution volume maths first.
- **If you want AI support but aren't on Intercom yet** — Fin is still the pragmatic starting point, but compare it against Tidio Lyro, Freshdesk Freddy and Zendesk AI before you adopt a new platform. (Our [customer-service roundup](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/best-ai-customer-service-chatbots-australia/) covers the buyable field.)
- **If support volume is huge and the AI agent is becoming your support operation** — Sierra earns the evaluation. Put it on a shortlist with other enterprise agents (Decagon and similar), and negotiate hard.
- **If you handle sensitive data under the Privacy Act** — neither tool gives you Australian data residency off the shelf. With Fin, data defaults to US servers and there's no confirmed AU option. With Sierra, residency is unpublished but negotiable in the contract — an advantage only if you have the procurement weight to insist on it.
- **If budget predictability is non-negotiable** — be wary of both. Fin's per-resolution fee is variable; Sierra's outcome pricing is variable *and* six figures. A flat-fee competitor may suit you better.

## Australian fit

Neither tool is built for Australia, and our scores say so plainly: Fin took **2/5 on Australian Fit**, Sierra **1/5**. Both fall under the Australian Fit gate that reserves five stars and category Top Pick status for tools scoring at least 4/5 on local fit — so neither can be crowned the category winner here, regardless of how the rest of the maths lands.

**Data residency.** Fin stores conversation logs — customer queries, account details, support history — on US servers by default, with no confirmed AU or APAC data centre. Competitors like Freshdesk and Zoho Desk already offer Asia-Pacific options. Sierra publishes nothing on residency; for the enterprises it serves, that becomes a contract term to pin down rather than a setting to choose. Either way, if you're in health, finance, legal or telco, this needs explicit sign-off before deployment.

**Currency and GST.** Fin's pricing page lists USD only. If your account bills in USD you'll wear conversion fees every cycle, and GST treatment differs between AUD and USD invoicing — confirm both with Intercom AU before signing. Sierra is USD enterprise contracting end to end; an Australian buyer should make AUD pricing (or the exchange basis), GST treatment and data residency explicit written terms in the deal.

**Support and local context.** Both lean on imported support structures rather than AU-specific teams or hours. Neither natively understands Australian consumer law or business context — Fin answers only from the content you feed it; Sierra behaves only within the guardrails you define. Australian nuance is your job to encode in both.

For most Australian readers the residency and currency flags are the deciding constraint, not a footnote. Budget GST on top in both cases and get the data terms in writing.

## The verdict

For the buyer this publication is written for — a 35-year-old Melbourne business owner, a professional services firm, a growing e-commerce brand — **Intercom Fin AI is the pick, and it isn't close**. Not because it's the better piece of AI; on raw capability Sierra is arguably ahead, and its outcome-based model is the fairer idea. Fin wins because you can buy it, budget it, and have it live in a week, on a platform you may already run. That accessibility is the whole game for our readers.

Sierra is the right answer for a genuinely narrow audience: large Australian enterprises with enormous support volume, treating the AI agent as the core of their support operation rather than a bolt-on. If that's you, Sierra belongs on the evaluation list — and you should negotiate the data residency, currency, GST and outcome definitions as hard as the price. If it isn't you, Sierra's six-figure floor and sales-led process make the decision for you.

So: unless you operate at enterprise scale and are rebuilding support around the AI itself, pick Fin — run the per-resolution volume maths on your real ticket numbers before you commit to a paid plan, and confirm the AUD and data-residency terms with Intercom first. Sierra is the tool to watch, because outcome-based pricing and resolve-the-whole-task agents are coming to the tools you can actually afford. It just isn't the tool to buy today.

Update history
- **21 Sep 2026** — **Every AUD figure in the FAQ and the at-a-glance row was on the retired 1.55 basis while the body was on 1.40.** Fin's per-resolution fee read **A$1.53** in the FAQ and its JSON-LD twin and **A$1.39** in the pricing section — same US$0.99, two Australian prices. Sierra's reported contract band read **A$230,000–A$540,000** in three places, described in the FAQ as being "at \~1.40" when it is US$150,000–US$350,000 at 1.53–1.54; it is now **A$211,000–A$492,000**. Fin's base seat read **\~A$45** against the A$41 the body derives from US$29 (A$45 is that figure grossed up 10% for GST, which our GST rule retired) and is now **\~A$41**. The two volume examples that rest on the fee move with it: 1,000 tickets at a 50% resolution rate **A$765 → A$695**, and 2,000 tickets **"over A$1,500" → about A$1,390**. **No USD figure moved** and none of Sierra's or Intercom's own statements changed. Basis USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule, and the FAQ's "budget GST on top" replaced with the actual GST position in words. No score change: the piece turns on Fin being self-serve and Sierra being a six-figure sales-led contract, which is if anything clearer at the corrected numbers. Superseded figures kept visible per our price-history rule; `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Should an Australian support team pick Intercom Fin AI or Sierra?

For almost every Australian buyer that isn't a Fortune-50-scale enterprise, Intercom Fin AI is the pick. It has published pricing, self-serve sign-up and a 14-day trial, and bolts onto an inbox you may already run. Sierra is the stronger agent but is sales-led, six figures a year, and built for large enterprises making the AI agent the core of their support operation.

### How does Sierra's pricing compare to Intercom Fin AI's in AUD?

Fin charges a per-seat base (from \~A$41/seat/month) plus US$0.99 (about A$1.39) per autonomous resolution, with a 50-resolution monthly minimum. Sierra publishes no price; it uses outcome-based pricing on sales-led contracts independently reported at roughly US$150,000–US$350,000+ per year (about A$211,000–A$492,000+ at 1.4045). Our AUD figures are conversions shown ex-GST: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; an unregistered buyer should allow \~10% on top.

### Do Intercom Fin AI or Sierra offer Australian data residency?

Neither offers Australian data residency off the shelf. Fin defaults to US servers with no confirmed AU or APAC option. Sierra doesn't publish residency details, so an enterprise buyer must make data residency, currency and GST explicit contract terms. Both scored low on Australian Fit (Fin 2/5, Sierra 1/5).
