Head-to-head verdict

[**20**/25Ignition](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/ignition-review-australia-2026/)[**20**/25MYOB](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/myob-review-australia-2026/)

**No single winner.** The right choice depends on the job; the verdict below says who should buy which.

People pit Ignition against MYOB as if you have to choose one. You usually don't. These two tools live in different parts of the same business and, for a lot of Australian practices, the right answer is "both." But they get compared constantly — partly because both are proudly Australian, both have bolted "AI" onto a mature platform in 2026, and both turn up on the shortlist when an accounting or bookkeeping practice decides to tidy up its software stack.

So this is less a cage match than a map. Ignition is the proposal-to-payment engine: it writes the quote, locks in the engagement letter, raises the bill and collects the money. MYOB is the accounting platform underneath: GST, BAS, payroll, super, and the books themselves. We've scored both at **20/25 — Very Good**, and both earn a perfect **5/5 for Australian fit**. The question isn't which is better. It's which job you're trying to fix.

## Quick look

| | **Ignition** | **MYOB** |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **What it is** | Proposal, engagement-letter, billing & payment-collection engine for practices | Australian small-business accounting platform (GST, BAS, payroll, super) |
| **Our score** | 20/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good | 20/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |

| **The real AI** | Price Insights (paid add-on) — pricing benchmarks | AI BAS, Smart Reconciliation, Insights, Invoice Reminders (mostly Beta) |
| **Best for** | Getting paid: agreements, billing, cash collection | The books: compliance, payroll, BAS, the ledger |
| **Data residency** | US servers | AU entity; physical location not publicly stated |

Same score, same top-tier local fit, opposite jobs. That tells you most of the story already.

## What it costs in Australia

Both price in AUD, which immediately puts them ahead of the USD tools your accountant reconciles by hand. The figures below are on our house basis — Ignition lists ex-GST, so we've grossed those up to ex-GST for a like-for-like read; MYOB already lists ex-GST.

| Plan / tier | Ignition (AUD, inc. GST) | MYOB (AUD, inc. GST) |
| ----------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Entry** | Solo — $42.90/mo (listed $39 ex GST) | Lite — $315/yr (\~$26.25/mo) |
| **Workhorse** | Pro — $273.90/mo (listed $249 ex GST) | Pro — $70/mo |
| **Top tier** | Pro+ — $548.90/mo (listed $499 ex GST) | AccountRight Premier — $210/mo |
| **The real cost** | Payment fees: direct debit 1% (capped $5); standard cards 1.95% + $0.30; premium cards 2.5% + $0.30 | Payroll add-on $3/employee/mo on Lite & Pro; online payments 1.8% + $0.25 |
| **AI feature** | Price Insights — $399/yr for 200 insights (ex GST) | In-built AI included in plans |

A note on each. Ignition's headline subscription is the *smaller* number — the part that matters is the payment processing fee on every dollar your clients pay through it. On direct debit (the natural default in Australian accounting) that's cheap; lean on Amex and premium cards at 2.5% and it climbs fast. MYOB's trap is the opposite: its advertised prices are introductory teasers that revert, payroll is a separate $3-per-employee add-on on the cheaper plans, and the standard Pro price ($70/month) sits higher than most people expect. Neither is hiding anything — both footnote it all — but in both cases the sticker is not the landed cost.

**Tax Practitioners Board guidance (final, 22 July 2026).** If a registered tax or BAS agent runs either tool's AI features on your file, the TPB's Guidance Statement TPB(GS) 55/2026 applies to the agent, not the software: they stay accountable for the accuracy of every output, must exercise their own judgement rather than rely on the AI, and must not put your information into an AI model without your permission and a clear answer on where the data is stored. Nothing here changes those obligations — and none of it replaces advice from a registered practitioner. ## Where they actually differ

They barely overlap, which is the whole point. Set side by side:

**Ignition owns the commercial chain.** You build a branded online proposal with good/better/best options, the client signs once, and that single signature accepts the proposal, executes the engagement letter and terms, and authorises billing. From there it bills — one-off or recurring, in advance or arrears — and collects automatically by card or direct debit, syncing the invoice to your ledger. Its standout feature is killing accounts receivable: it converts "we'll invoice you" into money in the bank and stops revenue leaking through forgotten or written-off work.

**MYOB owns the compliance chain.** GST tracking and BAS lodgement, Single Touch Payroll (including STP Phase 2) straight to the ATO, automated super, the actual ledger and reporting. It is built by an Australian company (MYOB Australia Pty Ltd, ABN 13 086 760 198) around Australian tax law — not retrofitted from an overseas template. That's the job Ignition explicitly does *not* do: Ignition prepares no BAS, lodges no return, and keeps no books.

The AI tells the same split story. Ignition's only genuine AI is **Price Insights** — a paid add-on that benchmarks your prices against aggregated, anonymised proposal data and suggests where you're undercharging. Everything else in Ignition is workflow automation, and very good automation, but not AI. MYOB's AI is broader and aimed squarely at the chores small businesses hate: **AI BAS** prepares an ATO-ready BAS for you to review and lodge, **Smart Reconciliation** matches transactions as you work, **AI Business Insights** reads your cashflow, and **Smart Invoice Reminders** chases late payers. The honest caveat: most of MYOB's AI is still **Beta** — treat it as a sharp junior that does the legwork while you sign off, especially on anything you lodge.

One place they genuinely touch: both chase late payers. Ignition prevents the problem upstream by collecting automatically on a schedule; MYOB's Smart Invoice Reminders nudges debtors after the fact. Ignition's approach is the stronger of the two if getting paid is your single biggest pain — but it only works on engagements you've put through Ignition's billing.

And the integration matters: Ignition syncs natively with MYOB (and Xero, XPM, QuickBooks Online, Karbon and FYI). They are designed to sit beside each other, not replace each other.

## Who should pick which

**Pick Ignition if** your pain is the commercial side — sending proposals, raising invoices, and chasing money. If you run an accounting, tax or bookkeeping practice that bills clients on an ongoing basis and writes off too much, Ignition is probably the single highest-leverage operational tool you can add. It does the unglamorous quote-to-cash work better than any single-purpose rival, and on direct debit the economics are excellent. **Ignition is our winner for getting paid.**

**Pick MYOB if** your pain is the books — GST, BAS, payroll and super done locally and correctly. For an Australian small business (or the BAS and tax agents servicing them) that wants compliance handled by software built here for our tax system, MYOB is the strongest Australian fit in the category and a low-regret choice. **MYOB is our winner for the books and compliance.**

**The honest answer for most practices is both.** Run MYOB (or Xero) as the ledger and compliance engine, and Ignition as the proposal-and-payment layer on top, syncing into it. They're priced for different problems and they solve different problems; owning both is normal, not redundant. If your budget forces a single choice, decide by which fire is bigger right now: leaking revenue and admin (Ignition) or shaky, manual compliance (MYOB).

On Australian fit there's nothing to separate them — both score 5/5, so the Australian Fit gate doesn't tip the verdict either way. The split above is about the job, not the local credentials.

**Honest limitations.** Neither is the whole stack. Ignition does no accounting and hosts your data on US servers with no AU-specific certification. MYOB's headline price isn't the real price, most of its AI is still Beta, and it publishes no IRAP assessment or explicit data-residency location — fine for most small businesses, worth a direct question if you're in a regulated or government-adjacent setting.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which is better for my Australian practice, Ignition or MYOB?

They do different jobs, so for most practices the answer is both. Both score 20/25 and 5/5 on Australian Fit. Pick Ignition to get paid (proposals, billing, collecting cash); pick MYOB for the books (GST, BAS, payroll, super). Ignition syncs natively into MYOB.

### Do both price in AUD?

Yes, both bill in AUD — a real advantage over the USD tools. Ignition lists ex-GST (Solo from $42.90/month inc GST); MYOB lists ex-GST (Pro $70/month). Watch the real costs: Ignition's payment processing fees and MYOB's $3/employee payroll add-on and reverting intro prices.

### Is there a free plan or trial?

Neither offers a permanent free tier in this comparison. Both are paid subscription platforms — Ignition from $42.90/month inc GST, MYOB Lite from $315/year. Confirm current pricing and any trial offer on each vendor's AU page before you buy.

### Which has the better AI?

MYOB's is broader, aimed at the chores small businesses hate — AI BAS, Smart Reconciliation, Business Insights and Smart Invoice Reminders, though most are still Beta. Ignition's only genuine AI is Price Insights, a paid add-on benchmarking your pricing. Treat MYOB's Beta AI as a junior you sign off.

### Do both store data in Australia?

Not clearly. Ignition hosts your data on US servers with no AU-specific certification. MYOB is an Australian entity but doesn't publish its physical data location or an IRAP assessment. Fine for most small businesses; worth a direct question if you're in a regulated setting.
