- Description: Gorgias is built for Shopify stores; Zendesk AI is built for everyone else. The right pick depends almost entirely on whether your world is e-commerce or general service. Here's the verdict for the typical Australian buyer.

Head-to-head verdict

[**16**/25Gorgias AI](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/gorgias-ai-review-australia/)[**17**/25Zendesk AI](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-zendesk-ai-australia-2026/)

**No single winner.** The right choice depends on the job; the verdict below says who should buy which.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

This is not a fight between a good tool and a bad one. Both Gorgias and Zendesk AI are **⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good** in our reviews — Zendesk AI at 17/25, Gorgias at **16/25 since we re-scored its Value for Money on 21 September 2026** (it was 17/25). Neither is a category Top Pick. Both are worth your money in the right hands.

The difference is shape. Gorgias is an e-commerce-native helpdesk. Zendesk is the general-purpose support giant with AI bolted on. One reads your Shopify order data and answers "where's my parcel?" without a human. The other handles every channel a bank or telco could throw at it.

So the decision is not really "which is better." It is "which is shaped like my business." If your world is online retail, one of these is built for you. If your world is broad service across many channels, the other is. Pick the wrong one and you will pay for capability you cannot use, or fight a tool that does not understand orders.

Here is how to tell which is which.

---

## The core tension

Gorgias exists for one reason: to resolve e-commerce support tickets. It launched in 2015, serves more than 7,000 online stores, and most of them run on Shopify. Its AI Agent reads your store data in real time — order status, returns, exchanges, stock, discount codes — and resolves common questions autonomously. It can even reach out before the customer does, triggered by a shipping delay or a delivery window.

Zendesk is the opposite of specialised. It is the most widely deployed support platform in the world, used by Australian banks, airlines, telcos and retailers. Its AI sits inside Zendesk Suite as three parts: **AI agents** that resolve tickets end-to-end, **Copilot** that drafts replies and suggests actions for human agents, and **QA** that reviews 100% of interactions for quality. It speaks every channel — email, chat, WhatsApp, SMS, voice, social.

That is the whole story in miniature. Gorgias goes deep on commerce. Zendesk goes wide on everything. The buyer who needs order-aware replies and the buyer who needs omnichannel coverage are not the same buyer.

## What it costs in Australia

Neither vendor makes AUD billing simple. Both price in USD. AUD figures below convert at roughly 1 USD ≈ A$1.40 (September 2026) and are approximate. Treat GST separately — see the Australian fit section.

### Gorgias

Gorgias prices in USD only, with no AUD billing in the checkout flow. Its plans bundle a ticket allowance, then charge overage. The AI Agent is a separate per-resolution add-on.

| Plan | Monthly (USD) | Annual per month (USD) | Approx AUD (annual) | Tickets/mo | Overage |
| ---------- | ------------- | ---------------------- | ------------------- | ---------- | ----------------- |
| Starter | US$10 | — | \~A$14.00/mo | 50 | US$0.40/ticket |
| Basic | US$60 | US$50 | \~A$70.00/mo | 300 | US$40/100 tickets |
| Pro | US$360 | US$300 | \~A$420/mo | 2,000 | US$36/100 tickets |
| Advanced | US$900 | US$750 | \~A$1,050/mo | 5,000 | US$36/100 tickets |
| Enterprise | Custom | — | — | 5,000+ | US$32/100 tickets |

The **AI Agent add-on** is charged per resolved conversation: **US$1.00** on monthly billing, **US$0.90** on annual — roughly **A$1.26–A$1.40 per resolution**. That is the line most Australian merchants miss. The ticket allowance and the AI resolution are billed separately, so an AI-handled conversation can cost you twice.

### Zendesk

Zendesk has an Australian pricing page, but the prices on it currently display in USD. They are per agent, per month, billed yearly.

| Plan | USD/agent/mo | Approx AUD ex-GST |
| ---------------------------- | ------------ | ----------------- |
| Suite Team | US$55 | \~A$77 |
| Suite Professional | US$115 | \~A$161 |
| Suite Enterprise (+ Copilot) | Custom quote | — |

On top of the seat price, the AI costs extra:

- **AI agents (automated resolutions):** included in every Suite plan with a pool of free resolutions per agent. Beyond the pool, Zendesk charges per verified resolution — at volume this is the line that grows fastest.
- **Copilot:** included at Enterprise. Below Enterprise it is an add-on at **US$50/agent/month** (\~A$70 ex-GST).
- **QA:** roughly **US$35/agent/month** (\~A$49 ex-GST) as an add-on.

A five-agent team on Suite Professional, adding Copilot and QA, lands near **A$1,545/month ex-GST** (\~A$18,500/year) before any resolution overages. The base plan looks reasonable; the full AI stack does not.

### Reading the two pricing models

These models are not comparable line-for-line, and that is the point. Gorgias charges by **ticket volume plus per-resolution** — there is no seat fee, so a two-person store pays for throughput, not headcount. Zendesk charges **per agent seat plus AI add-ons** — so cost scales with team size, and the AI is something you layer on top.

For a lean Shopify store with a handful of staff and high ticket volume, Gorgias's no-seat model is cheaper. For a larger service team where agent count is the real variable, Zendesk's per-seat model is more predictable. Run your own numbers; the cheaper tool flips depending on whether your bottleneck is tickets or headcount.

## Feature diff

| | Gorgias | Zendesk AI |
| ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| **Built for** | E-commerce, Shopify-first | General-purpose support, any industry |
| **Order-aware AI** | Yes — reads live Shopify data (order status, returns, stock) | Via integration; not native commerce logic |
| **Proactive outreach** | Yes — cart abandonment, shipping triggers | Limited; not its core strength |
| **Channels** | Email, chat, SMS, voice, Messenger, Instagram — **no WhatsApp** | Email, chat, **WhatsApp**, SMS, voice, social |
| **Agent-assist** | AI-drafted replies and macros | Copilot — drafts, suggestions, backend actions |
| **Quality review** | Not a core feature | QA reviews 100% of interactions |
| **Integrations** | Deep commerce stack | 1,000+ connectors across categories |
| **Best fit** | Shopify/WooCommerce stores | Multi-channel service operations |

The split is clean. Gorgias wins decisively on **commerce depth**: order-aware autonomous replies and proactive shipping flows are things Zendesk simply does not do natively. Our review rated Gorgias's feature depth as best-in-class for Shopify — and near-useless for a non-Shopify merchant.

Zendesk wins on **breadth**: omnichannel coverage including WhatsApp, Copilot for agent assist, QA across every ticket, and an integration library that connects to almost anything an Australian business already runs. Our review rated Zendesk as one of the most complete support AI stacks available.

Notice the gaps that matter for Australia. Gorgias has no WhatsApp — a real channel for many AU retailers. Zendesk has no native commerce intelligence — it can connect to Shopify, but it does not *understand* an order the way Gorgias does.

## Australian fit

This is where the two tools genuinely separate, and it is the most important section for an Australian buyer. Both score the same overall, but their Australian Fit scores are far apart: **Gorgias 2/5, Zendesk 4/5.**

### Data residency

This is the decisive gap. **Zendesk offers Australian data hosting on AWS Sydney** — customers can request their data be hosted in Australia, which satisfies many Privacy Act 1988 and Australian Privacy Principles requirements. Confirm in your contract which data types (ticket content, customer PII, bot conversations) the Australian region covers.

**Gorgias has no such guarantee.** It runs on Google Cloud, and while its subprocessor register lists Australian GCP regions, its privacy policy is explicit that data "may process and store personal information both inside the United States and overseas." For a tool storing customer conversation data, that is a material issue under the Privacy Act, not a footnote. If Australian data residency is a hard requirement for you, Gorgias likely cannot meet it today.

### GST

Neither vendor bills in AUD, so neither shows a clean GST line. **Gorgias** assesses tax against your billing address and operates an Australian affiliate entity; whether the tax line on your invoice is Australian GST and claimable as an input tax credit is something to confirm with your accountant — especially on Pro and above, where monthly spend can clear the GST registration threshold. **Zendesk** publishes an Australian page and base AUD pricing context, but with prices currently in USD you should likewise confirm GST treatment on the invoice. Either way, do not assume the displayed price includes GST.

### Support and market presence

**Zendesk** has operated in Australia for years, with business-hours support at higher tiers and a deep install base across AU banks, airlines and retailers — which simplifies procurement and legal review. **Gorgias** offers 24/7 live chat on Pro and above but publishes no AU-business-hours commitment or response-time SLA on lower tiers. For a tool at Gorgias's price point, that localisation is thin.

The honest summary: Zendesk is the safer choice for any Australian business where compliance, data residency or procurement scrutiny matters. Gorgias is highly relevant to AU e-commerce — Shopify is dominant here — but its vendor-side localisation has not caught up to its market relevance.

## The scorecard

One point apart, by very different routes. Gorgias moved from 17/25 to 16/25 on 21 September 2026, when we cut its Value for Money to 2/5 — Gorgias now charges **US$1.50 per automated interaction past an allowance of 30 a month, was US$0.90**, and its own pricing schema confirms each of those interactions also counts as a helpdesk ticket.

| Criterion | Gorgias | Zendesk AI |
| --------------------- | -------------------------- | -------------- |
| Value for Money | **2/5** (was 3/5) | 3/5 |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | 3/5 |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | 4/5 |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | 4/5 |
| Reliability & Support | 4/5 | 3/5 |
| **Total** | **16/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐** (was 17/25) | **17/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐** |

Gorgias buys its points with **ease of use and reliability** — fast Shopify-native setup and a decade-deep market position — but gives three back on Australian Fit (USD-only, no data-residency guarantee) and now another on price. Zendesk buys its points with **breadth and Australian Fit** — Sydney hosting, Privacy Act terms, local presence — but loses on a steeper learning curve and per-resolution unpredictability.

Neither clears five stars. Gorgias is gated under the Australian Fit gate regardless of total, because its 2/5 Australian Fit falls below the 4/5 threshold an Excellent rating requires. Zendesk's 4/5 meets that gate, but its raw 17/25 still places it at four stars. Two Very Good tools, two different reasons — and the one-point gap is not what decides this comparison. The verdict below is shape-based, and it has not moved.

---

## Who buys which — the verdict

The decision is store-shaped, and it comes down to a single question: **is your world e-commerce, or is it general service?**

**Buy Gorgias if you are a Shopify (or WooCommerce) retailer.** If most of your tickets are "where's my order," "can I return this," or "is this back in stock," Gorgias resolves them autonomously by reading your live store data — and Zendesk cannot do that natively. The proactive shipping and cart flows genuinely cut ticket volume. Accept the trade-offs going in: USD billing, no WhatsApp, and no Australian data-residency guarantee. If customer data leaving Australia is a dealbreaker for you, Gorgias is out regardless of how well it handles orders.

**Buy Zendesk AI if your support is broad, multi-channel, or compliance-sensitive.** If you run service across email, chat, WhatsApp, voice and social — or you are a bank, telco, healthcare or government-adjacent operator where AWS Sydney residency and Privacy Act terms matter — Zendesk is the safer, more complete choice. It is also the better fit if your bottleneck is a growing agent team rather than raw ticket volume. The catch is cost discipline: the base seat price is reasonable, but Copilot, QA and per-resolution overages stack fast. Model your full stack before signing.

**The pick for the typical Australian buyer.** Our reader is a 35-year-old business owner, and in Australia a very large share of those owners run Shopify stores. For that specific buyer — an Australian online retailer wanting order-aware AI replies — **Gorgias is the better-shaped tool**, provided they have confirmed they can live without Australian data residency and without WhatsApp. The order intelligence is the whole point, and it is the thing Zendesk cannot match.

But the moment the buyer is *not* primarily an e-commerce store — the moment they need omnichannel breadth, sit in a regulated industry, or require data to stay onshore — **Zendesk AI is the clear winner**, and its 4/5 Australian Fit is exactly why.

There is no universal champion here. There is only the question of whether your business is shaped like a store or shaped like a service desk. Answer that honestly, and the choice makes itself.

Update history
- **21 Sep 2026** — **The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table.** The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: under the ATO rule our GST treatment rests on, a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. **Nothing was re-cut** — the ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule: the column headed *"Approx AUD if GST charged, +10%"* (Suite Team **\~A$85**; Suite Professional **\~A$177**). The GST position is stated in words once in the note above the pricing table. No USD price moved and no score changed. `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.
