Head-to-head verdict

**Our pick: Employment Hero.** The verdict below says who should buy the other.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Winner: Employment Hero** for the typical Australian SME. It is built for Fair Work, modern awards and AUD payroll out of the box. Choose Rippling only if you run a multi-country scale-up that needs HR, IT and finance in one system.

Two platforms promise the same thing: one system to run your whole workforce. Both pitch all-in-one HR, payroll and AI to growing businesses. But they were built on opposite sides of the Pacific, and it shows.

Employment Hero was built in Sydney for Australian employers. It speaks Fair Work, modern awards and AUD as a first language. Rippling was built in San Francisco for the global market. It is more powerful across the full workforce stack, but lighter on the local detail that decides Australian payroll.

For an Australian business owner, that difference is not academic. It is the gap between software that interprets your award and software you have to interrogate before you trust it. Here is how the two compare, and who should buy which.

In our individual reviews, Employment Hero scored **22/25 (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent)** and Rippling scored **17/25 (⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good)**. We are not re-scoring here — this is a head-to-head for the Australian buyer trying to choose.

## What both tools actually do

Both platforms try to replace the five tools a growing business usually stitches together. Both cover HR records, onboarding, leave, payroll, performance and recruitment. Both thread AI through the system rather than bolting it onto one module.

Employment Hero is operated by an Australian company headquartered in Sydney. It runs the full employment lifecycle — core HR, payroll, time and attendance, rostering, performance, learning and recruitment — with employees self-serving through the Swag app. Its AI layer covers candidate matching, screening and an HR assistant. It also includes a human HR advisory service and Fair Work-aware award interpretation.

Rippling is a US platform founded in 2016\. It spans three pillars: HR, IT (device management, app provisioning) and Finance (corporate cards, expense and bill pay). Payroll sits inside HR but connects deeply to the rest. Rippling AI runs natural-language queries across all that data. That IT and finance breadth is something Employment Hero simply does not attempt — and it is Rippling's real edge.

The headline split: Employment Hero is an Australian HR and payroll platform. Rippling is a global workforce operating system that happens to do Australian payroll.

## Pricing in Australia

Employment Hero publishes its prices in Australian dollars. HR Essentials is **AUD $10 per employee/month with a $100/month minimum**. HR Engage is **AUD $14 per employee/month with a $140/month minimum**. HR Elite and Employment Unlimited are quote-only. Fees are GST-exclusive under its terms (clause 13.5), so budget the extra 10%. There is no free tier on the current pricing page.

The monthly minimums matter for small teams. A five-person shop on HR Essentials pays the $100 floor — effectively $20 a head, not $10\. But you can read the price off a page and budget against it.

Rippling does not publish AUD pricing. Its model is modular: a base platform plus each module you activate, with most figures quote-only. Independent industry reporting cites a base of around **US$8 per user/month (\~A$11 ex-GST at \~1.40 shown ex-GST (a GST-registered business quoting its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers add \~10%)** for core HR only; per-module add-ons require a quote. We could not confirm AUD billing on any Rippling AU page (checked 7 June 2026), so treat exchange-rate exposure and GST treatment as open questions to settle with their sales team.

The practical gap: at base rate for 50 staff, Rippling runs about US$400/month (\~A$560) before you add a single functional module. Add Australian payroll, IT and spend management and a realistic full stack pushes well past that — an estimate, per industry reporting, that you must verify with a line-item quote. Employment Hero's pricing is transparent and AUD-native. Rippling's is opaque and US-anchored.

## Where Employment Hero wins

- **Fair Work and modern awards out of the box.** Its product page states it provides Fair Work-compliant modern-award calculations and award interpretation. This is the platform's whole orientation, not a bolt-on.
- **AUD billing with ABN tax invoicing.** You are invoiced in the currency you bill your own customers in. No exchange-rate drift, no GST guesswork.
- **Data stored in Australia.** Its Help Centre states customer data sits on protected AWS servers in Australia — a primary statement we confirmed. For Privacy Act peace of mind, that matters.
- **Human HR advisory included.** Real HR support and employment-claims representation sit behind the software, across plans. Rippling does not match this.
- **Transparent entry pricing.** You can budget from a published page without a sales call.

## Where Rippling wins

- **Feature depth across the full stack.** HR, IT and finance in one system is unmatched in this category. We scored its feature depth 5/5\. Nothing else provisions a laptop and runs payroll from the same employee record.
- **Multi-country scale.** If you employ people across several countries, Rippling's global reach beats a Sydney-built SME platform.
- **Rippling AI queries.** Natural-language questions across workforce data — "show me all full-time NSW staff who haven't done compliance training" — return filtered answers in seconds.
- **Automated onboarding.** One hire triggers contract, payroll file, super nomination, device order and app provisioning automatically — a chain that normally spans five tools.
- **IT device management.** Built-in MDM alongside payroll is genuinely unusual and useful for tech-heavy teams.

## Australian fit: the criterion that decides it

This is where the contest is settled, and it is not close.

**Award interpretation.** Employment Hero is built for Fair Work and modern awards as its core purpose. Rippling's AU payroll page does confirm it automatically applies base pay, overtime, penalty rates and allowances, and submits STP Phase 2 to the ATO — both confirmed primary-source claims. But which modern awards it covers, across which industries, is not detailed publicly. With Employment Hero, award awareness is the product. With Rippling, it is a claim you must verify against your specific awards before you trust it.

**Data residency.** Employment Hero stores data on AWS in Australia, per its Help Centre. Rippling's security page is explicit that all data sits in US-based AWS data centres, with no Australian option. Australian employee data — tax file numbers, super details, bank accounts — processed offshore raises real Australian Privacy Act 1988 questions. Seek legal advice before moving payroll data onto US infrastructure.

**GST and billing.** Employment Hero is AUD-native; its fees are GST-exclusive, so add 10%, but the invoice is clean and local. Rippling does not publish AUD pricing or confirm AUD billing, leaving GST treatment and currency exposure as items to nail down in a contract.

**Support and local presence.** Employment Hero has an Australian operating entity and a local support presence. Rippling does not confirm Australian support hours on its public pages.

On the criterion that defines this publication, Employment Hero scored Australian Fit 4/5 and Rippling 3/5\. That one-point gap is the whole story. Under our Australian Fit gate, Rippling's 3/5 caps it at four stars regardless of raw score. [Read our Methodology](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/).

A note for both: neither platform replaces qualified professional advice. Treat award calculations, super handling and AI HR answers from either tool as decision-support. Have a qualified HR or employment-law professional check pay, termination and contract decisions before you act.

## Which to pick — decision framework

- **If you are an Australian SME (5–150 staff) and Fair Work compliance is your biggest worry**, pick Employment Hero. It is built for your awards, billed in your currency, stored onshore, and backed by human advisory.
- **If you employ people across several countries and need HR, IT and finance in one system**, pick Rippling. The feature depth and global reach justify the complexity and the offshore data trade-off.
- **If you have 50+ staff and a dedicated HR team that wants device management inside payroll**, Rippling earns a serious evaluation — but verify every award and super claim in writing first.
- **If HR is run part-time by a founder or office manager**, Rippling is the wrong tool. The setup effort alone will absorb more time than it saves. Employment Hero, or a simpler AU payroll platform, fits better.
- **If data sovereignty is a hard requirement**, Employment Hero wins by default. Rippling has no Australian data option.

## The verdict

For the typical Australian buyer — an SME that lives and dies by Fair Work compliance — **the winner is Employment Hero.** It is built here, billed here, stored here, and oriented around the exact compliance risk that keeps Australian owners awake: underpayment and award misclassification. It scored 22/25 against Rippling's 17/25, and the gap is almost entirely Australian fit.

Rippling is the better platform in absolute terms. Its feature depth across HR, IT and finance is exceptional, and for a multi-country scale-up it is the obvious choice. But for an Australian SME, that power comes with USD-anchored pricing, offshore data and award coverage you have to verify yourself. That is friction the local incumbent simply does not impose.

So the rule is clean. Unless you are a multi-country scale-up that needs IT and finance in the same system as payroll, pick Employment Hero. It does the hard part of Australian HR — Fair Work and modern awards — as its native purpose, not as a feature you have to interrogate. Buy the platform built for your market.
