Head-to-head verdict

**No single winner.** The right choice depends on the job; the verdict below says who should buy which.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Winner depends on your problem.** Choose **Deel** if your main headache is paying overseas contractors and staff compliantly. Choose **Rippling** if you want HR, device management and payroll for a growing Australian team in one system.

Two platforms, two very different jobs. Deel and Rippling both promise to simplify the workforce admin that eats a growing business alive. But they solve opposite problems.

Deel exists to pay people across borders. It is an employer-of-record and contractor-payments platform first, built so you can hire in another country without setting up a legal entity there. Rippling exists to run your whole team from one login — HR, payroll, IT and spend — with AI threaded through the lot.

In our individual reviews, both scored **17/25 (⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good)**. We are not re-scoring here. This is a head-to-head for the Australian buyer trying to work out which one fits their actual problem.

## What each tool actually does

Deel is a US-headquartered global payroll and HR platform operating in more than 150 countries (Deel EOR guide, checked 26 June 2026). Its core job is compliant hiring across borders. You hire a developer in the Philippines or a marketer in Germany, and Deel becomes the legal employer through its local entity. It runs the payroll, handles the local compliance, and pays the worker in their currency. You send one consolidated payment.

For Australian businesses it works in two directions. Australian companies use it to hire overseas without setting up foreign entities. Overseas companies use its wholly owned Australian entity to hire here — Fair Work onboarding, superannuation and payroll tax handled. Alongside EOR, Deel runs contractor management: pay international freelancers in 120-plus currencies and collect their compliance documents in one place.

Rippling is a US platform founded in 2016\. It spans three pillars: HR (records, onboarding, performance), IT (device management, app provisioning, security) and Finance (corporate cards, expense, bill pay). Payroll sits inside HR but connects to everything. Rippling AI runs natural-language queries across all that data. Its AU payroll page states the platform submits STP Phase 2 to the ATO and automatically applies award base pay, overtime and penalty rates (rippling.com/en-AU/payroll, checked 7 June 2026).

The split is clean. Deel is a global payroll engine that happens to include an HRIS. Rippling is a whole-team operating system that happens to run Australian payroll.

## Pricing in Australia

Neither vendor makes AUD budgeting easy. Both bill in US dollars.

Deel publishes list prices in USD (Deel pricing page, checked 30 June 2026). Contractor management starts at **US$49 per contractor per month**. Contractor of Record starts at **US$325 per contractor per month**. Employer of Record starts at **US$599 per EOR employee per month**. Talent/ATS starts at US$14 per worker per month, and US PEO at US$125 per US employee per month. The EOR figure covers Deel's platform and employer liability only — it excludes the employee's salary, the 12% Superannuation Guarantee, and state payroll tax.

Rippling does not publish AUD pricing at all. Pricing is quote-only and modular: a base platform fee plus each activated module. Independent industry reporting puts the base at around **US$8 per user per month**, with payroll, IT and spend modules charged on top (Rippling pricing, checked 7 June 2026). Only the base figure is publicly cited; every functional module is quote-only.

Converted at roughly 1 USD = A$1.40 (September 2026), the picture looks like this. GST applies to imported digital services — confirm treatment with your accountant.

| Line item | USD list | Approx. AUD ex-GST |
| ------------------------------------------- | --------------------------- | ------------------ |
| **Deel** — Contractor management | US$49/contractor/mo | \~A$69 |
| **Deel** — Contractor of Record | US$325/contractor/mo | \~A$456 |
| **Deel** — EOR (employer of record) | US$599/employee/mo | \~A$841 |
| **Rippling** — Core platform (base) | \~US$8/user/mo (indicative) | \~A$11 |
| **Rippling** — Payroll / IT / Spend modules | Quote required | Quote required |

The two do not compare like-for-like, because they are not the same product. Deel's headline price is a per-hire fee for taking on the legal-employer burden in another country. Rippling's headline price is a low per-seat base that climbs steeply once you switch on the modules you actually need. A realistic full Rippling stack for a 50-person Australian team likely runs US$20–30 per user per month (indicative, per industry reporting — get a line-item quote).

Neither confirms AUD invoicing. For a business watching margins, that exchange-rate exposure is a real cost on both sides.

## Feature difference

The overlap is smaller than the category suggests.

**Where Deel is ahead:** cross-border hiring. Deel operates EOR in 150-plus countries and pays contractors in 120-plus currencies. If you are bringing on staff or freelancers outside Australia, nothing in Rippling's local-first payroll matches that reach. Deel's embedded AI compliance assistant answers country-specific employment-law questions quickly — useful for directional answers, not a substitute for a lawyer.

**Where Rippling is ahead:** running one team end to end. Rippling connects HR, payroll, IT device management and spend on a single employee record. Hire someone and the system can trigger the contract, the payroll file, the super fund nomination, the laptop order and the app provisioning in one chain. Deel's HRIS covers records, org charts and time off, but it does not touch device management or corporate spend. For an Australian business whose pain is "five disconnected tools," Rippling is the answer Deel is not built to be.

**On Australian payroll specifically:** this is where the split sharpens. Rippling builds STP2 and award interpretation into its payroll module for any Australian employer running it directly (rippling.com/en-AU/payroll, checked 7 June 2026). Deel only handles Australian payroll compliance through its EOR service — that is, when Deel is the legal employer. Deel has no self-service award-rate calculator for an Australian business managing its own existing workforce. If you employ Australians directly and need award and penalty-rate automation, that is Rippling's territory, not Deel's.

## Australian fit

Both platforms carry the same Australian Fit score in our reviews: **3/5**. The reasons differ.

**Data residency.** This is a shared weakness. Rippling's security page is explicit that all data sits in US-based AWS data centres, with no Australian option (rippling.com/security, checked 7 June 2026). Deel does not publish a specific Australian data-residency commitment for all data types, and employee data may be processed in the US (Deel review, 26 June 2026). Either way, employee records — tax file numbers, bank details, super fund details — likely leave the country. Under the Privacy Act 1988 your business stays liable for cross-border disclosure. Get a Data Processing Agreement reviewed before you move Australian employee data onto either platform.

**Superannuation and Fair Work.** Deel's wholly owned Australian entity handles Fair Work Information Statements and superannuation enrolment for its EOR hires — a stronger position than platforms relying on third-party local providers. Rippling claims super handling in its payroll module, but the specific guarantee-rate treatment is not confirmed on its public pages (verify directly). Both should be checked for payday-super readiness ahead of the July 2026 reform.

**GST.** Both bill in USD as overseas suppliers of digital services. Imported digital services generally attract 10% GST — neither vendor's public pricing makes the treatment clear, so confirm with your accountant before budgeting.

**Support.** Deel's support response times vary by time zone, and Australian users may wait outside US hours. Rippling does not confirm local Australian support hours on its public pages. Neither offers the local advisory presence an Australian-built platform would.

Neither reaches the 4/5 Australian Fit needed to lift the star rating or win a category Top Pick under our [Methodology](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/) (Australian Fit gate). Both are Very Good, not Excellent, for Australians.

## Who should buy which

**Buy Deel if** your core problem is paying people outside Australia. Hiring a contractor in Manila or an employee in Berlin without setting up an entity there is exactly what Deel is built for. At US$49 per contractor per month, its contractor management consolidates what would otherwise be a mess of international transfers and paperwork. The EOR is expensive at US$599 per employee per month, but cheaper than standing up a foreign entity and hiring local lawyers in each country. Deel is also the right call for an overseas company hiring into Australia through a compliant local entity.

**Buy Rippling if** you run a growing Australian team and want one system for HR, payroll, IT and spend. If you have 50-plus staff, a capable HR person, and the patience for a multi-week implementation, nothing here matches its feature depth. The device management alone — rare in an HR tool — justifies a look for businesses tired of provisioning laptops by hand. Just budget honestly: the modular pricing climbs fast, and the US data infrastructure needs a privacy review.

**Buy neither if** you are a small Australian business running a purely domestic workforce under Modern Awards. Deel's price floor is too high for that, and Rippling's complexity is unjustifiable under 50 staff. An Australian-built platform — Employment Hero, KeyPay or Xero Payroll — will serve you better and cheaper.

## The verdict

For the **typical Australian buyer** — a growing local team wanting to consolidate HR, payroll and IT — **Rippling** is the better fit. It does the everyday job Deel is not designed for: running one Australian team end to end, from onboarding to payroll to device management, on a single employee record.

But this is a genuine "it depends," not a hedge. The moment your problem becomes *paying people overseas compliantly*, Deel wins outright and Rippling is not in the conversation. Match the tool to the problem. If you are hiring across borders, Deel. If you are scaling one team at home, Rippling.

Update history
- **24 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 CORRECTION — the “if GST charged, +10%” column is gone.** This table printed **two Australian prices for every line**: a conversion at 1.4045 and the same figure grossed up 10% for GST. Our GST rule settled on 5 September 2026 that **we do not add GST to our own conversions** — the ATO does not charge GST to a GST-registered buyer who supplies an ABN on an imported digital service, so a grossed-up column overstates the cost for the business reader this comparison is written for, and says nothing the words cannot say once. Column removed; the ex-GST figures stay and two were re-rounded to the 1.4045 basis (A$455→A$456, A$839→A$841). Found by sentry 18 as `GST_GROSSUP`. **No USD figure changed.**
