ClickUp Brain is the best AI baked into a project-management tool for Australian teams that already run on ClickUp. The pitch is real — chat across your workspace, run Super Agents that work 24/7, dictate at 220 words a minute into any field, and switch between GPT, Claude Opus and Gemini with a single click. The Brain² refresh on 12 May 2026 made it materially better. The catch is that Brain is a separately priced product on top of your ClickUp plan, in USD only, with a real data-residency asterisk on the AI side. If ClickUp is already where your team works, the Brain AI add-on at USD$9 per seat per month annual is the right move. If it isn't, buy Claude or ChatGPT instead and spend the rest somewhere else.

## What is ClickUp Brain?

ClickUp Brain is the AI layer built into ClickUp, the work-management platform run by San Diego-based Mango Technologies. It's a stack of features rather than a single product: Brain Assistant for workspace-aware chat across tasks, docs, chat and email; @Brain Agent for @-mentioning the assistant inside any task or doc; Super Agents — described by the vendor as "the world's first human-like AI agents" — that you can assign work to, DM, and run on schedules; Brain MAX, a desktop super-app for Mac and Windows with voice dictation and universal search; an AI Notetaker that transcribes and summarises meetings; AI Fields that autofill database columns from workspace data; and AI Cards that generate slide decks from a single prompt.

The whole thing was rebranded **Brain²** on 12 May 2026 — an agentic refresh that automatically routes prompts across GPT, Claude and Gemini, layers in workspace context without manual configuration, and ships persistent memory that learns your role and communication style. CEO Zeb Evans framed the relaunch directly at the general-purpose AI assistants: "General-purpose AI doesn't know anything about your work. Brain² fixes that."

ClickUp's bet — and it's a defensible one — is that the best AI for getting your work done is the one that already sees your tasks, your docs and your chat. Brain isn't trying to be Claude or ChatGPT. It's trying to be the AI that already knows what you're working on.

## What we like

**Brain² is a real step up, not just a rebrand.** The 12 May 2026 launch added genuine agentic behaviour — task routing across model providers, persistent memory across sessions, and one-prompt generation of slide decks, dashboards and executable code from your workspace data. It also folded in the Codegen acquisition (closed 22 Dec 2025, USD$60M valuation) and the Qatalog enterprise-search engine (USD$25.4M-funded, closed 12 Nov 2025) into a coherent product. Two acquisitions, two product launches, one rebrand inside six months — and the result actually hangs together.

**The multi-model switcher is the cleanest in the category.** Brain² lists GPT, Claude Opus, Gemini and ClickUp's own proprietary Brain m1 contextual model as accessible from a single interface. Brain m1 sits in front of the frontier-model calls and layers in your workspace context — so you don't have to re-explain who your customer is every time you switch from Claude to GPT.

**Talk to Text is the headline Brain MAX feature.** ClickUp claims 220 words per minute dictation versus about 45 wpm for keyboard input. It works in any text field inside ClickUp and (via the desktop super-app) across other apps too. For anyone who runs a lot of meetings and dictates notes between them, this is the single feature most likely to pay for the subscription.

**ISO 42001 (AI Management System) is a compliance lead.** ClickUp's security page confirms the AI Management certification with ClickUp Brain features explicitly in scope — alongside SOC 1/2/3 Type 2, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, ISO 27701, HIPAA, GDPR and PCI-DSS. ISO 42001 is still rare in the workspace-AI category; Notion AI, Coda AI (now Docs AI in Superhuman Docs) and Linear AI haven't published it. For an Australian buyer with a procurement checklist, this is one of the easier yes-boxes Brain gives you.

**AWS Sydney data residency on Enterprise — and it doesn't cost extra.** ClickUp has had a dedicated APAC region on AWS Sydney since 18 October 2023\. Enterprise customers can pin their core workspace data to Australia at no additional cost, with Singapore, US and EU (Ireland) also on the menu. Foxtel, Ego Pharmaceuticals and Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong are named AU customers. Of the workspace-AI peer set, only Atlassian Rovo beats this on Australian data posture.

## Watch out for

**The residency promise does not extend to AI inference.** This is the catch, and it's load-bearing. ClickUp Brain calls out to OpenAI, Anthropic and Google APIs to do the actual model work — and those calls leave whichever region you've chosen for your workspace. ClickUp asserts zero data retention with its AI subprocessors, but the inference traffic itself does not stay in Australia. A customer feature request titled "Respect data residency for ClickUp AI users" has been open since 15 September 2025; as of this review the vendor has made no public commitment to closing it. If you have a hard contractual or regulatory requirement for AI inference to stay onshore, ClickUp Brain doesn't meet it today.

**No IRAP.** ClickUp has SOC 2 Type 2 and the full ISO stack, but it isn't IRAP-assessed. For Federal Government and most state-government use, that rules it out. Atlassian Rovo, which inherits the protected-tier posture of Jira and Confluence, is the obvious alternative in that segment.

**Stacked pricing — Brain is a paid add-on on top of a paid plan.** ClickUp's marketing leads with USD$9/seat/mo for Brain AI, but you can only buy that on top of a paid core ClickUp plan. The cheapest real-world full-Brain configuration is the Unlimited plan at USD$7 plus Brain AI at USD$9, which lands at USD$16 per seat per month on annual billing. The Business plan at USD$12 plus Brain AI lands at USD$21 per seat per month. There's no Brain-only subscription.

**Monthly billing carries a 50-58% premium.** Brain AI is USD$9/seat annual but USD$18/seat monthly — a 50% premium for monthly billing. Everything AI is USD$28/seat annual versus USD$68/seat monthly — a 58% premium. Annual billing is strongly favoured; the published "monthly" price is barely a real option.

**ClickUp doesn't pin specific model versions.** The vendor product page at clickup.com/brain names the underlying models by family — GPT, Claude Opus and Gemini, plus ClickUp's own Brain m1 contextual layer — rather than by version number (re-verified against the live page, 2 June 2026). That's fine for switching models on the fly, but if you need a contractual guarantee of a specific frontier-model version, ClickUp isn't the vendor that gives you that.

**ClickUp itself can feel like an overstuffed app.** Brain doesn't fix that. If your team already finds ClickUp's surface area overwhelming, adding an AI layer that pulls from every corner of the workspace can amplify the noise before it reduces it.

## Pricing

Brain pricing is the part most reviews under-explain, because it's two stacked products: a **core ClickUp work-management plan** (Free / Unlimited / Business / Enterprise) and a **Brain AI add-on** (Brain AI or Everything AI). You pay both.

### Core ClickUp plans (annual billing)

| Plan | Price (USD/seat/mo) | Price (AUD est. + GST @ FX 1.40) | Brain entitlement |

| Business | $12 | \~AUD$16.80 | Trial only; full Brain requires the add-on |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Trial only by default; Brain add-on priced separately |

### Brain AI add-on (annual billing)

| Plan | Price (USD/seat/mo) | Monthly USD | Price (AUD est. + GST @ FX 1.40) | What's included |
| ----------------- | ------------------- | ------------- | -------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Brain AI** | $9 (annual) | $18 (monthly) | \~AUD$12.60/seat/mo | Unlimited Brain Assistant and @Brain Agent, chat across Claude/ChatGPT/Gemini, 1,500 AI Super Credits/month, Brain MAX trial |
| **Everything AI** | $28 (annual) | $68 (monthly) | \~AUD$39.20/seat/mo | Everything in Brain AI plus AI Notetaker, image generation, AI Fields, Automations, Super Agents, Enterprise Search, AI Cards, Talk to Text, full Brain MAX; 5,000 AI Super Credits/month |

**Brain add-ons (separately purchased):** AI Super Credits at USD$10 per 10,000 credits (top-ups when monthly allocation runs out); Talk to Text at USD$9/user/mo as a standalone (included in Everything AI); AI Notetaker from USD$12 for 60 hours/month; AI Live Training Workshop at USD$400 for a one-time two-hour session.

**Value verdict:** The cheapest real-world full-Brain configuration is Unlimited plus Brain AI at USD$16/seat/mo on annual billing — about AUD$22 per seat per month with GST. A five-person Melbourne agency on Business plus Brain AI is USD$21 per seat per month, about AUD$29 with GST. Everything AI is the upgrade that earns its keep: Super Agents, the Notetaker and full Brain MAX together justify the jump for any team running real meeting volume or trying to push agentic workflows into production. Buying Brain in isolation (without already paying for ClickUp) makes no sense.

## Australian notes

- **Available in Australia:** Yes — global product, no geographic restriction. ClickUp has had a dedicated APAC GTM team based in Sydney since October 2023.
- **Pricing in AUD:** No. All pricing is displayed in USD on both the core pricing page and the Brain pricing page. AUD appears only on the cardholder statement at the bank's prevailing FX rate. AUD figures above are calculated at US$1 ≈ A$1.40 as of 23 May 2026.
- **GST:** Added at checkout for Australian consumer accounts. Australian business accounts that enter a valid GST/ABN number in billing details are not charged GST. The ABN-exempt mechanism is documented in ClickUp's sales-tax help page.
- **Data residency (core workspace):** Yes — AWS Sydney on Enterprise at no extra cost. Singapore, US and EU (Ireland) are also available. Free, Unlimited and Business plans default to US (AWS us-east-1) and are not region-selectable. Customers must request the AU region via sales.
- **Data residency (Brain / AI):** No. Inference traffic for OpenAI, Anthropic and Google calls leaves the customer's chosen region. The "Respect data residency for ClickUp AI users" feedback request has been open since 15 September 2025 with no public vendor commitment.
- **Compliance:** SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3; ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27017:2015, ISO 27018:2019, ISO 27701:2019; **ISO 42001 (AI Management System)** with ClickUp Brain features in scope; HIPAA-compliant; GDPR-mapped; PCI-DSS. **No IRAP listing.**
- **Local support:** Sydney-based APAC customer-success team since October 2023\. Standard support is in-app chat plus email (Free, Unlimited, Business); Priority support on Business; dedicated Customer Success Manager on Enterprise. No documented 24/7 AU-time-zone hotline.
- **Named AU customers:** Foxtel, Ego Pharmaceuticals, Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong.
- **AU-aware outputs:** None advertised. Outputs default to US English; no AU-specific templates surfaced on vendor pages.

## Best for

- **Australian small-to-mid teams (5–50 people) already running on ClickUp.** The Brain AI upgrade pays for itself in saved context-switching and meeting time.
- **Operations leads and project managers** who want one AI surface that sees the whole workspace — tasks, docs, chats, meetings — without copy-pasting between tools.
- **AU mid-market teams on Enterprise** that need AWS Sydney for core workspace data and can tolerate AI inference leaving the region under a zero-retention commitment.
- **Heavy meeting environments.** The Notetaker plus Talk to Text combination is genuinely productivity-shifting for anyone who lives in back-to-backs.

## Not great for

- **Teams not already on ClickUp.** Brain is not worth migrating to ClickUp for. Buy Claude or ChatGPT instead.
- **Federal Government and IRAP-regulated buyers.** No IRAP listing rules ClickUp out for protected workloads. Look at Atlassian Rovo.
- **Anyone with a hard contractual requirement for AI inference to stay in Australia.** The residency gap is real and unresolved as of May 2026.
- **Small teams that want a simple AI experience.** ClickUp's surface area is large; Brain pulls from all of it. Notion AI is gentler for a two-to-five-person operation.

## Alternatives worth considering

| App | Why you might prefer it |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Atlassian Rovo | Strongest AU credentials in the peer set — Sydney-founded, AWS Sydney residency, IRAP PROTECTED on Jira/Confluence/JSM. Right pick for Government or regulated workloads. |
| Notion AI | Simpler small-team experience inside a less overstuffed workspace. Brain² has more features; Notion has less to learn. |
| Claude or ChatGPT | If you don't already live in ClickUp, a general-purpose assistant gives you most of what Brain² does at a fraction of the all-in cost. |

## Our verdict

ClickUp Brain earns the upgrade if you already run on ClickUp. The Brain² refresh on 12 May 2026 was a real step forward, the Super Agents are useful, Talk to Text and the Notetaker are genuinely productivity-shifting, and AWS Sydney residency on Enterprise lifts ClickUp above Notion AI on the Australian fit axis. The catch — that residency doesn't cover AI inference, plus no IRAP and no AUD pricing — keeps it out of Government and out of contention for any buyer with a hard data-sovereignty requirement on AI. For a private-sector AU team already paying for ClickUp, Everything AI at USD$28/seat is the right move; for a team paying for ClickUp but new to the AI layer, start with Brain AI at USD$9/seat annual and step up if Super Agents and the Notetaker pull their weight. If ClickUp isn't already your workspace, this isn't your AI — buy Claude or ChatGPT instead.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is ClickUp Brain available in Australia?

Yes — it's a global product with no geographic restriction, and ClickUp has had a Sydney-based APAC team since October 2023\. Named Australian customers include Foxtel, Ego Pharmaceuticals and Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong.

### Does ClickUp Brain charge in AUD?

No. All pricing is displayed in USD; AUD appears only on your card statement at the bank's FX rate. Brain AI is US$9/seat/month on annual billing. GST is added at checkout, but ABN-registered business accounts can be exempt.

### Is there a free plan or free trial?

The Free Forever core plan gives trial access to Brain across chat, tasks and docs, but full Brain needs the paid add-on on top of a paid core plan. There's no Brain-only subscription.

### Can I keep my ClickUp Brain data in Australia?

Partly. Core workspace data can pin to AWS Sydney on Enterprise at no extra cost. But AI inference (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google calls) leaves your chosen region — ClickUp asserts zero retention, but it isn't onshore, and there's no IRAP.

### Is ClickUp Brain worth the add-on?

Yes, if your team already lives in ClickUp — Brain AI at US$9/seat annual pays for itself in saved context-switching. If you're not already on ClickUp, buy Claude or ChatGPT instead; it's not worth migrating for.
