> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Booke AI is the most literal "AI bookkeeper" we've tested. Instead of bolting suggestions onto a separate dashboard, it is invited into your Xero or QuickBooks Online file as a user and does the daily grind inside the ledger — categorising the bank feed, matching receipts and bills, chasing missing documents, and prepping reconciliation overnight. For an Australian bookkeeping practice or a hands-on business owner buried in bank-feed coding, that is a real time-saver, and it earns marks most US tools don't: native AUD pricing at A$179/business/month, a four-year-old Xero App Store listing rated 4.55/5, and a per-client model trained only on your own data. The catches are equally real: your client financial data sits in US data centres with no Australian residency option, Booke holds no IRAP and no SOC 2 of its own, there's no local support, and GST isn't spelled out on the invoice. And like every auto-bookkeeping tool — the AI posts the entries, but a human stays accountable for them. Worth a trial for practices and busy owners who will still review every batch; not for anyone who needs Australian data residency or a tool they never check.

## Who this is for (and who it isn't)

**Booke AI is for you if** you run an Australian bookkeeping or accounting practice with a stack of Xero or QuickBooks Online client files, or you're a hands-on business owner who does your own books and is sick of coding the bank feed line by line. If your week disappears into categorising transactions and chasing clients for receipts, this is built for exactly that pain.

**Booke AI is not for you if** you need your client data held in Australia for compliance or policy reasons, you want a tool with its own IRAP or SOC 2 certification on the shelf, or you're hoping to fully automate the books and never look again. None of those fit. And if you don't already use Xero, QBO or Zoho Books, there's nothing here for you — Booke works *inside* those platforms; it isn't a standalone ledger.

> **Finance caveat — read this first.** This review is general information, not financial, accounting or tax advice. Booke AI does not replace a qualified bookkeeper, BAS agent or accountant. Most importantly: an AI that auto-posts entries does not transfer accountability. Whoever signs off the books — you or your registered agent — remains responsible for every categorisation, GST treatment and reconciliation the AI proposes. Auto-bookkeeping changes who does the typing, not who is liable for the result. Review every batch.

## What Booke AI is

Booke AI is made by Booke AI, Inc., a US company based in Wilmington, Delaware. The product calls itself an "AI Bookkeeper," and the description is unusually accurate. Most tools in this category connect to your accounting platform by API and show you suggestions in their own dashboard — you still click, match and reconcile yourself. Booke does it differently: it is **invited into your Xero or QuickBooks Online organisation as a standard user**, and uses robotic process automation (RPA) to work directly in the ledger, the way a junior bookkeeper would ([Xero App Store listing](https://web.archive.org/web/20260602122646/https://apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai)).

The pitch is a three-step loop: "Invite Booke → it works daily → you review exceptions." Every morning it opens the bank feed, categorises new transactions, matches them to invoices, bills and receipts, requests any missing documents from the client, flags inconsistencies, and prepares the reconciliation — before you sit down ([booke.ai](https://booke.ai/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). You arrive to a file that's largely done, with a queue of exceptions to approve.

It is not a weekend project. Booke has been on the Xero App Store since February 2022 and currently holds **4.55 out of 5 from 129 reviews** ([Xero App Store](https://web.archive.org/web/20260602122646/https://apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai)) — a meaningful track record in the Australian accounting ecosystem. The vendor says it is "trusted by 10,000+ businesses and hundreds of accounting firms across US, UK, Canada, and Australia" (a marketing claim we couldn't independently verify), and it's backed by Alchemist Accelerator, Microsoft for Startups and Google for Startups.

## What it costs in Australia

Here's a pleasant surprise: Booke prices in Australian dollars natively. The AU site shows **A$179 per business per month** for the AI Bookkeeper (Business) plan when billed annually, or **A$195 per business per month** billed month-to-month; the US site shows US$129 for the same plan ([booke.ai/en-au/pricing](https://booke.ai/en-au/pricing?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).

*Pricing as of 2 June 2026\. Source:* [*booke.ai/en-au/pricing*](https://booke.ai/en-au/pricing?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)*. Billing is per business/entity, not per seat — so a firm pays per client file. The Annual/Monthly toggle works out to A$179/month on annual billing versus A$195/month month-to-month — roughly an 8% discount, or about A$192 a year, for committing annually. There is no free trial advertised; signup is via Xero/QuickBooks sign-in or a form, and Booke's terms specify a 14-working-day refund window from the subscription start date (no refunds after that), so treat the first fortnight as your effective trial (*[*booke.ai terms §17*](https://booke.ai/en-au/terms-and-conditions?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)*). The page shows the AUD price but says nothing about GST — confirm the GST line on your first tax invoice and check it carries an ABN, given Booke is a US vendor selling into Australia.*

**Value verdict:** A$179/business/month (annual) is fair-to-firm value for what it does — if it genuinely removes the bulk of daily bank-feed coding on a busy file, it pays for itself against an hour or two of charge-out time. Pay monthly and you're at A$195; the \~8% annual saving is modest, so only lock in once you've proven the tool on real files. But note the FX reality: A$179 converts to roughly US$115, yet the US headline is US$129 — so Australians aren't being penalised on the conversion, which is welcome. The sharper point is the per-business pricing model: a practice with 40 client files is looking at a serious monthly commitment, so the firm plan and its custom pricing will matter more than the A$179 sticker. Price it against the hours it actually saves on your messiest files, not your cleanest ones.

## How it works in practice

Setup is genuinely light. In Booke you click "Add business," choose Xero (or QBO/Zoho), and authorise the connection — Booke is then added as a user to that organisation ([Xero App Store](https://web.archive.org/web/20260602122646/https://apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai)). There's no Plaid, no second bank connection, no new dashboard to teach clients. It uses the bank feed you already have.

From there, the daily loop runs. The **auto-categorisation** engine codes new bank-feed transactions and, Booke claims, makes that work "80% faster" ([booke.ai](https://booke.ai/en-au/auto-categorization?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). The standout is **smart document matching**: rather than just picking a category, Booke checks how a vendor has been handled before, searches your QBO/Xero for the matching invoice or bill, and either matches it automatically or — if it can't find one — requests the document from the client and waits ([booke.ai](https://booke.ai/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). You set the rules: "all transactions over $50 need a receipt," for example, and it won't reconcile without one.

Around that core sit the supporting tools: a **Client Query Tool** to ask clients about transactions in one click, **inconsistency/error detection** to flag discrepancies, an **Activities Journal** that logs every change for an audit trail, a **performance dashboard** to track progress across many clients, and a Chrome extension that lets you bulk-reconcile categorised transactions inside Xero ([booke.ai/en-au/xero-reconciliation](https://web.archive.org/web/20260611001920/https://booke.ai/en-au/xero-reconciliation)). For a firm, that adds up to a single workflow that covers coding, chasing and reconciling without leaving the platforms staff already live in.

Underneath, each client gets what Booke calls an isolated, encrypted **"AI Brain"** — a model trained only on that client's own up-to-two-years of history and manual corrections, retrained before each session, with no cross-client learning ([booke.ai data handling](https://booke.ai/en-au/data-handling?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). In plain terms: it learns *your* coding habits on *that* file, and your data isn't used to train anyone else's.

## What it does well

- **It actually does the work, not just suggestions.** Logging into the ledger as a user and reconciling inside Xero/QBO is the real differentiator. For high-volume bank-feed coding, that's the difference between a tool that saves minutes and one that saves hours.
- **Smart document matching with client chasing built in.** Matching transactions to bills and receipts — and automatically requesting what's missing — targets the single most tedious part of practice bookkeeping.
- **Native AUD pricing.** A$179/business/month displayed directly, with no FX penalty versus the US figure. Rare among the US-headquartered tools we review.
- **A real Australian track record.** Four years on the Xero App Store, 4.55/5 across 129 reviews, AU a supported country, and AU tax rates and tracking categories sync through Xero ([Xero App Store](https://web.archive.org/web/20260602122646/https://apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai)).
- **Per-client data isolation.** Each client's "AI Brain" is separate and encrypted, trained only on their data, with no cross-client sharing and a stated 30-day delete-everything policy on cancellation ([booke.ai data handling](https://booke.ai/en-au/data-handling?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).

## What it doesn't do well

- **Your data lives in the US.** Booke's data-handling page states "Primary regions: US-based data centers," with only "Contact us for specific regional requirements" as an alternative ([booke.ai data handling](https://booke.ai/en-au/data-handling?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). For an Australian practice holding client financial records, that engages your cross-border disclosure obligations under the Privacy Act (APP 8). There is no advertised Australian data-residency option.
- **No IRAP and no Booke-held SOC 2.** Booke encrypts data (AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.3 in transit) and is GDPR-compliant, but it does not claim its own SOC 2 certification. Instead it relies on its hosting providers' SOC 2 and on annual partner audits by Intuit and Xero, which it frames as "equivalent to direct SOC 2 certification" ([booke.ai security](https://booke.ai/en-us/security?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). That's a weaker, more indirect assurance than a tool that holds the certification itself — worth understanding before you put a regulated client's books through it.
- **GST treatment is unclear.** The AUD price is shown, but there's no GST line or inclusive/additive statement anywhere on the pricing page or in the terms. Confirm it on your first invoice.
- **No local support.** Email and chat support, a US phone number on the Xero listing, and Calendly demos — but no Australian office or stated AU business hours ([Xero App Store](https://web.archive.org/web/20260602122646/https://apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai)).
- **It is not set-and-forget.** This is a feature as much as a flaw, but it bears repeating: the AI proposes and posts, and you remain accountable. Firms that treat the exception queue as optional will get burned. Budget review time into the workflow.

## Australian fit

- **Available in Australia:** Yes. Dedicated AU locale (booke.ai/en-au) and AU listed as a supported country on the Xero App Store. ([apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai](https://web.archive.org/web/20260602122646/https://apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai))
- **Pricing in AUD:** Yes — A$179/business/month (annual) or A$195/business/month (monthly), shown natively. No FX penalty versus the US$129 figure.
- **GST:** Not stated anywhere on the pricing page or in the terms. Confirm the GST line and ABN on your first tax invoice.
- **Data residency:** US-based data centres. No advertised AU region; "contact us for specific regional requirements" is the only stated path. ([booke.ai/en-au/data-handling](https://booke.ai/en-au/data-handling?ref=theaidirectory.com.au))
- **Compliance:** AES-256, TLS 1.3, GDPR-compliant, Standard Contractual Clauses for EU transfers. No IRAP, no ISO 27001, no Booke-held SOC 2 — security rests on SOC 2-certified hosting and Intuit/Xero partner audits. ([booke.ai/en-us/security](https://booke.ai/en-us/security?ref=theaidirectory.com.au))
- **Integrations:** Xero, QuickBooks Online and Zoho Books. AU tax rates, tracking categories and bank transactions sync through Xero. ([apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai](https://web.archive.org/web/20260602122646/https://apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai))
- **Local AU support:** None advertised. Email/chat (team@booke.ai), US phone, Calendly demos. No AU hours.

**Tax Practitioners Board guidance (final, 22 July 2026).** If a registered tax or BAS agent runs Booke.ai's AI features on your file, the TPB's Guidance Statement TPB(GS) 55/2026 applies to the agent, not the software: they stay accountable for the accuracy of every output, must exercise their own judgement rather than rely on the AI, and must not put your information into an AI model without your permission and a clear answer on where the data is stored. Nothing here changes those obligations — and none of it replaces advice from a registered practitioner. | **Dext** | The incumbent for receipt and bill capture, with deep OCR and a strong Australian market presence. Stronger on document capture; doesn't work *inside* the ledger as a user the way Booke does. |
| **Hubdoc** | Owned by Xero and bundled free with most Australian Xero plans. If you're on Xero, you may already be paying for capture and fetch — start here before adding cost. |
| **Xero (native rules + JAX)** | Xero's own bank rules and its AI assistant (JAX) handle a lot of categorisation natively, with the data-residency and local-support story of an AU-region platform. The conservative, lowest-friction option for Xero-only practices. |

## Bottom line

For an Australian practice or owner whose week is eaten by coding bank feeds and chasing receipts, Booke AI does something most "AI bookkeeping" tools only promise: it works inside the ledger and gets the daily file 80% done before you start. The native AUD pricing, the four-year Xero track record and the per-client data isolation are all genuine ticks, and the smart document matching is the kind of specific, tedious-task automation that earns its keep.

It scores 15 rather than higher because of where it sits on the things that matter most in Finance & Accounting: your client data lives in the US with no Australian residency option, Booke holds no IRAP and no SOC 2 of its own, there's no local support, and GST isn't clear on the invoice. For a regulated AU practice, those are not footnotes — they're the questions your own compliance obligations force you to ask. And the tool is emphatically not set-and-forget: a human stays accountable for every entry the AI posts.

Our recommendation: trial it on your messiest, highest-volume Xero or QBO files, where the time saving is largest, and keep the exception review disciplined. If Australian data residency or independent certification is a hard requirement for your firm or your clients, wait — or lean on Xero's bundled Hubdoc and native rules until Booke offers an AU region. We'd expect to refresh this review inside six months and will flag any change to data residency or certification in the monitor.

| Value for Money | 3/5 | A$179/business/month (annual; A$195 monthly) is fair for the work it removes, with no FX penalty; but per-business pricing adds up fast for a multi-client firm, and there's no free trial |

Update history
- **2 Jun 2026** — First reviewed.
- **21 Sep 2026 — ⚠️ Booke AI is no longer on the Xero App Store, and Booke no longer markets Xero at all. This review is built around Xero.** A citation-rot sweep found `apps.xero.com/au/app/booke-ai` returning HTTP 404\. It is not a bot block and not a URL change: **`apps.xero.com/au/app/dext-prepare` and `/app/hubdoc` both return 200 from the same machine in the same minute**, and the US listing (`/us/app/booke-ai`) 404s too. Booke has also disappeared from Xero’s own AU collection page *Optimise your bookkeeping practice* (`apps.xero.com/au/collection/bookkeeping-apps-with-ai`), which still lists GoCardless, Hubdoc, Stripe, XBert and Xero Practice Manager. **Booke’s own site tells the same story.** `booke.ai/xero` now returns “Page Not Found”, and the live Australian page (`booke.ai/en-au`) markets the product as an “AI Bookkeeper for QuickBooks Online” that will “seamlessly connect to QuickBooks or Zoho Books” — **Xero is not mentioned on it anywhere.** That contradicts this review’s title, its verdict, its “who this is for” section and several scored lines. **Australian Fit and Reliability & Support both lean on the Xero listing** — “four years on the Xero App Store, 4.55/5 across 129 reviews, AU a supported country” — and that evidence no longer exists as a live page. **Nothing has been re-scored or rewritten here.** The Xero App Store citations now point at the Wayback capture taken on **2 June 2026**, the day of the review, and the Xero reconciliation feature page at its capture of **11 June 2026** — both are a record of what was true in June, not evidence of anything today. Queued as a full re-review: whether Booke still supports Xero at all is now the first question the piece has to answer. No same-day capture — archive.org was returning “Temporarily Offline” and HTTP 429 on 21 September 2026.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Booke AI available in Australia?

Yes. It has a dedicated AU locale (booke.ai/en-au), is listed as a supported country on the Xero App Store, and AU tax rates and tracking categories sync through Xero. It works inside Xero, QuickBooks Online or Zoho Books — it isn't a standalone ledger.

### Does Booke AI charge in AUD, and how is GST handled?

Yes — Booke prices natively in AUD: A$179/business/month billed annually, or A$195 month-to-month, with no FX penalty versus the US$129 figure. Billing is per business file, not per seat. GST isn't stated anywhere on the pricing page or terms, so confirm the GST line and ABN on your first tax invoice.

### Is there a free trial?

No free trial is advertised. Booke's terms specify a 14-working-day refund window from the subscription start date, so treat the first fortnight as your effective trial.

### Where is my client data stored?

In US-based data centres. Booke's data-handling page lists no advertised Australian residency option — only "contact us for specific regional requirements." For an AU practice this engages your cross-border disclosure obligations under Privacy Act APP 8\. Booke also holds no IRAP and no SOC 2 of its own, relying on its hosts' certification and Intuit/Xero partner audits.

### Who is Booke AI best for?

Australian bookkeeping or accounting practices, and hands-on owners, buried in daily bank-feed coding and receipt-chasing on Xero or QBO files. It's not set-and-forget — a human stays accountable for every entry the AI posts, so keep the exception review disciplined. Avoid it if you need Australian data residency or independent certification.
