Category verdict

[**19**/25ElevenLabsBest available](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/elevenlabs-review-australia-2026/)

**No Top Pick yet.** Nothing in this category clears our Australian Fit gate (4/5); ElevenLabs is the best available.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Correction, 21 September 2026.** This roundup priced WellSaid Labs at **\~A$77 (US$55 “Creative”)**. That tier has been **withdrawn**. The ladder now opens at **Starter, US$10/month billed annually (about A$14 ex-GST) or US$19 monthly**, as the [WellSaid review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/wellsaid-labs-review-australia-2026/) records. Two claims moved with the figure: the plan names, and the line calling WellSaid's entry price high for a solo creator, which was true of Creative and is not true of Starter. **The score is unchanged at 13/25** — the review has already re-scored on this evidence, and a roundup should not out-rank its own review.
>
> **Our pick:** **ElevenLabs** — the best raw voice quality and the widest Australian-accent control of anything we tested. **Best for predictable voiceover work:** **Murf AI**, which sells hours instead of a confusing credit meter. **Best for reading documents aloud:** **Speechify**.
>
> One thing up front: the highest score isn't automatically your pick. ElevenLabs wins on quality, but it bills in USD, adds GST at an Australian checkout, and offers no AU data residency. If you just want clean voiceovers without watching a credit balance drain, Murf is the calmer buy.
>
> **⚠ Update — 20 September 2026: Resemble AI, at number five, no longer publishes a voice price.** Its pricing page is now titled "Deepfake Detection & AI Security Pricing", and the per-second voice rates we cited are off the site. Resemble's voice models ship as **Chatterbox**, MIT open source you can self-host, with an enterprise tier sold through sales. Its entry below has been corrected. The other four tools were not re-checked today.

## First, which reader are you?

AI voice tools all claim to do everything. They don't. Sort yourself into one of these three buckets before you spend a cent:

- **Voiceover and narration** — you're making YouTube videos, training modules, explainers, podcasts, or ad reads. You want studio-grade voices, an editor, and clear commercial rights. *Look at ElevenLabs, Murf, WellSaid.*
- **Reading and accessibility** — you want articles, PDFs, and emails read aloud to you on your phone or laptop. *Look at Speechify.*
- **Voice cloning and real-time agents** — you're building a product, an IVR phone line, a chatbot voice, or cloning a brand voice via API. *Look at ElevenLabs and Resemble AI.*

If you're a 35-year-old Melbourne small-business owner making your own marketing videos, you're in bucket one. Read the ElevenLabs and Murf entries first.

## Quick-pick table

| **[WellSaid Labs](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/wellsaid-labs-review-australia-2026/)** | Corporate English voiceover at volume | \~A$14 (US$10 Starter, annual) | 7-day trial (no commercial) | **13/25** ⭐⭐⭐ |
| **[Resemble AI](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/resemble-ai-review-australia-2026/)** | Developers building cloned-voice products | No published voice price; open-source models or contact sales | Free credits | **13/25** ⭐⭐⭐ |

*All prices are USD converted at AUD ≈ 1.40 × USD. Most of these tools display ex-GST USD shown ex-GST (a GST-registered business quoting its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers add \~10%). AUD figures are indicative; confirm at checkout.*

## Why this matters for Australians

Here's the uncomfortable truth that runs through this entire category: **none of these tools is Australian, none bills natively in AUD, and none offers Australian data residency.** Every one is a US company pricing in US dollars.

That has three practical consequences:

1. **You pay the exchange rate, and the GST answer depends on you.** A "USD$22/mo" plan is roughly AUD$31 at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026), and that is the figure we publish. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; an unregistered buyer should allow \~10% on top. Either way the headline US price is never what lands on your card — your bank adds its own conversion fee on top.
2. **Tax invoices vary.** Some vendors issue a GST-compliant tax invoice with an ABN reference you can claim back; others issue a plain US receipt. If you're claiming the input credit, check before you subscribe.
3. **Your voice data sits offshore.** For a clone of your own or a staff member's voice, that's a privacy and consent question worth taking seriously — especially under the Privacy Act reforms now in force.

So the "Australian Fit" score is low across the board. We're not grading on a curve. A tool that's brilliant globally but treats Australia as an afterthought gets told so.

## How we tested

We signed up to each tool's free or entry tier from an Australian IP, generated the same 200-word script in a neutral and an Australian-accented voice where available, and checked: voice naturalness, accent range, editor usability, commercial-use terms, and exactly what hit the checkout in AUD including GST. Pricing and plan claims are anchored to each vendor's own pricing page (cited in Sources). We applied our locked 5-criteria scorecard (/25) and the Australian Fit gate.

## The picks, ranked

### 1\. ElevenLabs — the quality benchmark, USD warts and all

**Score: 19/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good**

[ElevenLabs](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/elevenlabs-review-australia-2026/) is the voice everyone has heard, whether they know it or not — it's the default behind a huge slice of YouTube narration and AI reading apps. The fame is earned: it produces the most natural, least "robotic" output we tested, and its Eleven v3 model lets you direct accent and emotion with audio tags, including a genuinely convincing Australian accent rather than a flat American default ([ElevenLabs — Australian accent](https://elevenlabs.io/text-to-speech/australian-accent?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).

Pricing is credit-based and runs Free (10k credits/mo, \~10 min), **Starter USD$6 (\~AUD$8)**, **Creator USD$11/mo intro then USD$22 (\~AUD$31)**, **Pro USD$99 (\~AUD$139)**, scaling to Business USD$990 ([ElevenLabs — Pricing](https://elevenlabs.io/pricing?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). Instant voice cloning with a commercial licence starts at the Starter tier; professional cloning unlocks at Creator. The pricing page states plainly that "prices exclude all taxes, levies and duties" — so expect GST added at an Australian checkout on top of the converted figure.

**The catch for Australians:** it's USD-only, there's no AU data residency (only EU residency and zero-retention modes are offered), and the credit system makes it genuinely hard to predict your monthly spend. Heavy months blow the budget.

**Verdict:** Get the **Starter (\~AUD$8)** to trial, jump to **Creator (\~AUD$31)** when you need professional cloning. Best quality in the category — just go in knowing the bill moves with usage and arrives in US dollars plus GST.

### 2\. Murf AI — predictable voiceovers without the credit anxiety

**Score: 17/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good**

[Murf](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/murf-ai-review-australia-2026/) is the tool we'd hand a non-technical small-business owner who just wants clean voiceovers for videos and presentations. Instead of an abstract credit meter, it sells you **hours of voice generation**, which makes budgeting sane. It's built around a proper studio editor with 200+ voices across 20+ languages and a timeline you can sync to slides or video ([Murf — Pricing](https://murf.ai/pricing?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).

Plans run Free, **Creator at USD$29/mo monthly or USD$19/mo billed annually (\~AUD$41 / \~AUD$27)**, and **Business at USD$99/mo monthly or USD$66/mo annually (\~AUD$139 / \~AUD$92)**, all with commercial rights. Watch one genuine quirk: Murf's monthly and annual billing don't grant the same hours, and monthly can deliver *more* generation capacity than annual — estimate your hours first, then pick the cycle. All paid plans include commercial rights — a genuine plus, as that's where some rivals get murky.

**The catch:** the very top-tier ElevenLabs realism isn't quite there on every voice, Australian-accent options are narrower, and — same story as the whole list — it's USD-billed with GST at checkout and no AU data residency.

**Verdict:** If you value a predictable bill and a real editor over squeezing out the last 5% of naturalness, **Murf Creator** is the safer, calmer buy than ElevenLabs for everyday Australian business video work.

### 3\. Speechify — for listening, not producing

**Score: 15/25 ⭐⭐⭐ Good**

[Speechify](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/speechify-review-australia-2026/) is a different animal. Its core product reads things *to you* — articles, PDFs, emails, textbooks — on your phone or in your browser, which makes it excellent for accessibility, commuting, and getting through a reading pile. Premium runs about **USD$139/year (\~USD$11.58/mo, \~AUD$16/mo)**, or up to USD$29/mo billed monthly, unlocking 200+ voices, 60+ languages and offline downloads ([Speechify — Pricing](https://speechify.com/pricing/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). There's also a separate Speechify Studio product (Starter USD$19, Creator USD$49/user/mo) for those who want to *produce* voiceovers with cloning and commercial rights ([Speechify — Studio Pricing](https://speechify.com/pricing-studio/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).

**The catch:** the consumer app isn't built for polished video voiceover, the two-product split (app vs Studio) confuses buyers, and the big annual-vs-monthly price gap pressures you into a yearly commitment. USD-billed, GST at checkout.

**Verdict:** If your goal is **consuming** content hands-free, Speechify Premium is the best buy here. If your goal is **producing** voiceovers, scroll back up to ElevenLabs or Murf.

### 4\. WellSaid Labs — corporate English, English only

**Score: 13/25 ⭐⭐⭐ Good**

[WellSaid](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/wellsaid-labs-review-australia-2026/) is the buttoned-up enterprise option: consistent, clean, professional English voices aimed at corporate training, e-learning and internal comms. The **Creative plan is USD$55/mo (\~AUD$77)** with commercial rights; Business and Enterprise are quote-based ([WellSaid — Pricing](https://www.wellsaid.io/ai-voice-pricing?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)).

**The catch:** the standard Starter, Pro and Business plans support **English only** — multilingual is gated behind a quote-based Enterprise tier. There's no Australian-accent specialisation to speak of, and it's USD-billed with GST at checkout and no AU data residency. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026: this named the Creative tier, withdrawn, and called the entry price “high relative to the value for a solo creator” — which was true of Creative at US$55 and is not true of Starter at US$10.)*

**Verdict:** Worth a look **only if** you're a team producing high volumes of English corporate voiceover and you value consistency over accent range. For everyone else, ElevenLabs or Murf does more for less.

### 5\. Resemble AI — for builders, not creators

**Score: 13/25 ⭐⭐⭐ Good**

[Resemble](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/resemble-ai-review-australia-2026/) has pivoted to a developer-and-enterprise posture, and in 2026 it went further. It dropped its consumer subscription tiers for a **pay-per-use Flex model** (load credits, pay for what you use, from US$0 to start) plus quote-based Enterprise. It still does rapid and professional voice cloning, full API access, and a deepfake-detection product.

**The catch, updated 20 September 2026:** the pricing page now covers **deepfake detection and security only**. The voice rates are gone from it. Resemble's TTS and cloning models are published as **Chatterbox** under an MIT open-source licence — free to self-host if you have the infrastructure — with a **Chatterbox Pro** enterprise tier sold through sales ([Resemble — TTS](https://www.resemble.ai/products/text-to-speech?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). For detection, Flex costs US$0.035 a second of audio, and Team is US$280 a month billed annually ([Resemble — Pricing](https://www.resemble.ai/pricing?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). There is no simple "sign up and make a voiceover" plan, and now no self-serve voice price either. Not the tool for a small-business owner making marketing clips.

**Verdict:** A strong pick **if you're a developer or product team** willing to self-host Chatterbox or negotiate an enterprise contract. Skip it if you just want to narrate a video — and note you can no longer look up what the voice product costs.

## How to choose (Q&A)

**I make marketing videos and I'm not technical. What do I get?** Murf AI Creator (\~AUD$41/mo). Predictable hours, real editor, commercial rights baked in.

**I want the absolute best voice quality and I'll manage the budget.** ElevenLabs Creator (\~AUD$31/mo) for professional cloning, or Starter (\~AUD$8/mo) to trial.

**I want to listen to articles and PDFs, not make voiceovers.** Speechify Premium (\~AUD$16/mo billed annually).

**I need an Australian accent specifically.** ElevenLabs has the strongest accent control with v3 audio tags. Test it on the free tier first.

**I'm a developer building a voice into a product.** Resemble AI (pay-per-use) or ElevenLabs' API.

**Does GST really get added?** Yes — assume it on all of these. Most display ex-GST USD and add \~10% at an Australian checkout. Check whether you get a tax invoice with an ABN reference if you're claiming it back.

## What we'd skip and why

- [**Play.ai / PlayHT**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-play-ht-australia-2026/) — once a strong contender, **acquired by Meta in July 2025 and permanently shut down on 31 December 2025**, with all accounts, voice clones and audio deleted and no export path ([ThePlanetTools — PlayHT shutdown](https://theplanettools.ai/tools/playht?ref=theaidirectory.com.au)). Do not start here; former users should migrate to ElevenLabs.
- **Free-tier-only workflows** — every free tier here is a trial, not a business tool. The 10-minute and watermark-adjacent limits run out fast.

## Bottom line

If you want the best voices and you can stomach a usage-based bill in US dollars plus GST, **ElevenLabs** is the pick — it wins on quality and Australian-accent control, and that's why it scores highest at 19/25\. But if you're a typical Australian small business that wants clean voiceovers without watching a credit meter, **Murf AI** is the calmer, more predictable buy, and we'd point most readers there first. **Speechify** is for listening, not producing. **WellSaid** is for English corporate volume. **Resemble** is for developers.

The honest caveat for the whole category: this is a US-priced market with no Australian data residency. Until that changes, factor the exchange rate, the GST, and the offshore-data question into every decision — especially if you're cloning a real person's voice.

Update history
- **21 Sep 2026** — **The “budget closer to AUD$34” rule of thumb removed.** The roundup told readers a USD$22/mo plan converts to AUD$31 and then to budget **AUD$34** because GST is “generally added at checkout”. That is the retired convention, and it is wrong for most of this publication's readers: under the ATO rule our GST treatment rests on, a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. The section now gives the ex-GST conversion at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026) and states the GST position in words, rather than adding 10% to every number. **No tool's price, ranking or score changed** — the AUD$31 figure and every per-tool figure in the table were already ex-GST. Superseded figure kept visible per our price-history rule.
- **20 Sep 2026** — **Resemble AI's pricing page now sells deepfake detection, not voice.** **Old, now unpublished: text-to-speech US$0.0005/sec, Rapid clone US$2/voice/mo, Pro clone US$5/voice/mo, team seat US$20/mo.** **New ladder: Flex US$0 pay-as-you-go · Team US$280/mo billed annually · Business US$800/mo · Enterprise custom**, with Detect for audio at US$0.035/sec on Flex. The voice models are now MIT open-source Chatterbox, with Chatterbox Pro sold through sales. Resemble's row and section 5 corrected. - **6 Sep 2026** — Pricing re-based to the current USD→AUD rate and shown ex-GST, per our AUD pricing rule and our GST rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which AI voice generator is best for Australians?

ElevenLabs (19/25) wins on raw voice quality and the widest Australian-accent control, with a convincing AU accent via its v3 audio tags. But if you want predictable voiceovers without a credit meter, Murf AI (17/25) is the calmer buy for everyday Australian business video.

### Are any of these tools free?

Most have a free tier worth trialling — ElevenLabs (10k credits/month, \~10 min), Murf (limited), Speechify (10 voices) and Resemble (free credits). WellSaid Labs offers only a 7-day trial with no commercial use. Treat every free tier as a trial, not a business tool.

### Do any bill in AUD or keep data in Australia?

No. None of these tools is Australian, none bills natively in AUD, and none offers Australian data residency. Every one is a US company pricing in USD, with GST generally added at an Australian checkout under the imported-digital-services rules — so budget above the headline US price.

### Is cloning a voice a privacy concern in Australia?

Yes — worth taking seriously. Your voice data sits offshore, so cloning your own or a staff member's voice is a privacy and consent question, especially under the Privacy Act reforms now in force. Check whether you get a GST tax invoice with an ABN reference if you're claiming the credit.
