**Our Top Pick for Australians: Heidi Health.** Every pick below is scored on the same five criteria.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Our pick: Heidi Health** (22/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) — Melbourne-built, onshore core data, native Best Practice and MedicalDirector, and a free tier you can run on real consults. **Runner-up: Lyrebird Health** (21/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) — also Melbourne-built, with the cleanest onshore data story in the category (AWS Sydney, end to end). **Budget pick: Heidi Health** — its free tier gives unlimited transcription and standard-template notes, so a solo clinician can run it at $0 indefinitely.

Australian clinicians have a real choice in AI scribes now. The catch is that most of the famous names were built for somewhere else. This roundup sorts the five biggest options by the one question that actually matters here: where does your patients' data live? On that test, the two Melbourne-built scribes win, and the global heavyweights lose.

## Why AI medical scribes matter for Australian clinicians

Documentation is the tax on a clinical day. A busy GP can lose an hour or more to typing notes, drafting referrals and writing care plans. That is time taken from patients, or from going home. An AI medical scribe — the category is called ambient clinical documentation — listens to the consult, drafts the structured note, and hands you a first draft to check rather than a blank screen to fill. The realistic saving is in the order of one to two minutes per consult once you trust the output. Across a 30-patient day, that adds up.

Adoption is climbing fast. Among Australian GPs, ambient scribe use reached roughly 18.7% in May 2026, up from about 8% in late 2024\. The Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service reported a 22% lift in outpatient throughput after rolling one out. The tools work. The question is which one is safe and sensible for an Australian practice.

That question is mostly about data. A clinical note is among the most sensitive personal information that exists under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). APP 8 governs cross-border disclosure: send health data offshore and you carry obligations — and risk — for where it lands and whose law it sits under. Many practices, and most hospitals and state health services, either require or strongly prefer onshore storage. So the headline feature in this category is not note quality or speed. It is residency. Where the data lives decides whether a tool is usable here at all.

That is why local fit, not raw product polish, decides our ranking. The two Australian-built scribes answer the residency question plainly. The three global names either store data offshore, or are not sold here yet, or both.

## How we assessed them

We scored each tool on our standard framework: five criteria, five points each, 25 total — Value for Money, Ease of Use, Feature Depth, Australian Fit, and Reliability & Support. Pricing is anchored to primary sources and shown in AUD with GST treatment noted. Every factual claim traces to a vendor page or a verified secondary source; the full citations sit in each tool's own review.

One rule decides this category. Under our Australian Fit gate, no tool can be rated Excellent (five stars) or named a category Top Pick unless it scores at least 4/5 on Australian Fit — regardless of its raw 25-point total. In Healthcare & Medical AI, that gate is not a formality. Health-data residency and Privacy Act compliance are the whole game. A scribe that cannot keep Australian patient data onshore, or cannot be bought in Australia at all, cannot be the local winner no matter how good the product is overseas. The two AU-built scribes clear the gate. The three global names fail it. See our [Methodology](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/) for the full framework.

## The picks, ranked

### 1\. Heidi Health — 22/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

**Verdict: the AI scribe most Australian clinicians should trial first.** Heidi is Melbourne-built, founded by former vascular surgical resident Dr Thomas Kelly, and it now supports more than two million consults a week across 116 countries. For Australians the appeal is that the things that trip up overseas tools — local clinical software, AU privacy law, AU spelling and terminology — were the starting point, not an afterthought.

It hosts Australian customer data onshore and says so plainly: "all our data is locally hosted within Australia." It adheres to the Privacy Act 1988 and all 13 APPs, holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type 2 certification, and deletes the consult audio once the note is generated. Those security credentials are about as strong as the category currently offers. Crucially, the note files natively into Best Practice and MedicalDirector — the two most common GP systems here — with synced connections to Cliniko, Genie, Halaxy and more. No copy-paste.

Pricing anchors to the US$150/month Clinician plan (≈ A$210/month at A$1.40/USD); the AU page renders in local currency, so the exact GST-inclusive figure only appears at sign-up. The free tier is genuinely usable: unlimited transcription and standard-template notes, with the paywall biting only at 10 advanced "actions" a month.

The one honest caveat, and the reason Australian Fit is 4/5 rather than 5/5: Heidi's privacy policy reserves the right to process some *optional* add-on features (Heidi Comms, Heidi Evidence) and certain third-party services offshore under data-processing agreements. Core consult data stays onshore; a practice with an absolute no-data-leaves-Australia mandate should check that clause against the features it plans to use. AUD pricing transparency is also poor until you sign up.

It still takes our Top Pick. Onshore core data, native AU clinical-software integration and a free tier you can prove on your own patients are the right combination for the most clinicians. Start on Free, run it for a fortnight, and see whether it gives back the hour a day it promises. [Read the full Heidi Health review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-heidi-health-australia-2026/).

### 2\. Lyrebird Health — 21/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

**Verdict: the strongest pure onshore data story in the category, and the first name to compare against Heidi.** Lyrebird is also Melbourne-built, founded in early 2023 by Kai Van Lieshout and Linus Talacko. It is used on around 30,000 consultations a day in Australia, and the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service reported a 22% throughput lift after deploying it.

On data residency, Lyrebird is the cleanest in this group — which is why it scores a perfect 5/5 on Australian Fit. Transcription and language-model processing both run on AWS Sydney servers, sensitive information is not transferred offshore, and no audio is stored. It states full compliance with the Privacy Act 1988 and the APPs, and confirms it does not use patient data to train AI. It runs natively inside Best Practice with patient context pre-loaded, with native links to Gentu, Meditech, Cubiko and Oracle Health (Cerner), Genie marked "coming soon," and FHIR/HL7 support for the rest.

Pricing is published openly in AUD: Pro is A$160/user/month on the annual plan (ex GST; budget roughly A$176 with GST), with a free Lite tier (50 actions/month, no integrations). The standout is an 80% registrar discount for the duration of a trainee's employment — unusually generous, and worth flagging to anyone supervising registrars.

Two caveats keep it just behind Heidi. First, Lyrebird publishes no current independent ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification — it cites Medical Defence Organisation approval and Privacy Act compliance, but no completed third-party certificate. For hospital procurement, that gap can be a blocker. Second, MedicalDirector, Cliniko and Halaxy are not native integrations, so allied health practices on those systems should confirm the FHIR/HL7 route works for them first. Support is business-hours chat and email with no published SLA.

If your single highest priority is onshore data with no asterisks, Lyrebird edges even Heidi. For most clinicians the two are close enough that note quality and integration fit decide it — so trial both. ### 3\. Microsoft Dragon Copilot — 17/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

**Verdict: the most credentialed scribe on the market — but you can't straightforwardly buy it in Australia yet.** Dragon Copilot merges Dragon Medical One's dictation pedigree with DAX's ambient listening, embeds deeply in Epic, and is trusted by hundreds of large US hospital systems. On feature depth it is best in class: ambient notes, dictation, summaries, referrals, coding, and role-based experiences for physicians, nurses and radiologists.

Here is the catch that drops it below the gate. As of June 2026, Microsoft's Dragon Copilot availability list runs to ten countries — the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Australia is not on it. There is no public AU price; the product is enterprise quote-only. And its documented integrations are hospital EHRs like Epic — nothing for Best Practice or MedicalDirector, the platforms Australian general practice actually runs on.

The cloud foundations are genuinely strong, which is the reason to watch it. Its predecessor, Dragon Medical One, is sold in Australia with regional Azure data residency, and Azure's Australian regions are IRAP-assessed to PROTECTED. So a compliant Australian Dragon Copilot is plausible. But Microsoft has not published Dragon Copilot-specific Australian compliance — no Privacy Act, no APP, no product-level IRAP — consistent with it not being sold here yet.

Australian Fit: 2/5\. The gate is decisive: a 17/25 raw total still cannot earn five stars or Top Pick status while the product isn't on Microsoft's AU availability list. If you run a large Australian hospital on Epic, put it on your watch list. If you're a solo GP in Tasmania, an Australian-built scribe will serve you sooner and cheaper. [Read the full Dragon Copilot review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-microsoft-dragon-copilot-australia-2026/).

### 4\. Nabla — 14/25 ⭐⭐⭐

**Verdict: a very good scribe sold to the wrong continent.** Nabla Copilot is fast, polished and well funded — roughly US$120 million raised, 85,000-plus clinicians, 150-plus health organisations, 50-plus specialties. Notes generate in under 20 seconds, audio is not stored by default, and the security posture is mature (SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR). On product merit it is genuinely strong.

For Australia, one fact ends the conversation: there is no Australian data-residency option. Non-US clients' clinical data is stored in EU Google Cloud data centres, with speech-to-text processed through US Azure regions. For an Australian GP weighing APP 8, that is the whole decision. There is no onshore region to choose.

It compounds from there. Nabla publishes no public pricing in any currency — you must book a sales call, which is itself a red flag when local rivals publish AUD openly. Its named integrations are all US systems (Epic, Oracle Health, Athenahealth, NextGen, Greenway); there is no Best Practice, MedicalDirector or Genie. The product lists English and French only, with no AU terminology, MBS context or My Health Record signal, and no stated Australian support hours.

Australian Fit: 2/5 — fails the gate. Good tool, wrong market. Until Nabla offers Australian hosting and local clinical-software integration, an Australian clinician is better served by a local scribe. [Read the full Nabla review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-nabla-australia-2026/).

### 5\. Abridge — 14/25 ⭐⭐⭐

**Verdict: a top-tier US scribe with no Australian door.** Abridge is one of the most credible scribes in the world — Epic's first "Pal" partner, backed by a US$300M Series E, supporting 50 million-plus conversations a year across 150-plus US health systems including Mayo Clinic, Kaiser Permanente and Johns Hopkins. For a US clinician on Epic, it is among the best available.

For an Australian, it is effectively unbuyable. There is no self-serve sign-up, no AU pricing, and no public price list — Abridge sells through negotiated US enterprise contracts only. A solo GP in Hobart or a clinic in Geelong simply cannot pick this up.

The data question is worse than offshore — it is unanswered. Abridge's trust centre publishes no data-hosting location and no AU region at all. Its compliance frame is entirely US (HIPAA, SOC 2, CCPA, TX-RAMP), with no stated Australian Privacy Act posture and no My Health Record consideration. Under APP 8, that silence is disqualifying for Australian health data until clarified. And its core advantage — native Epic embedding — does not map onto the Best Practice / MedicalDirector reality of Australian general practice.

Australian Fit: 1/5 — the lowest in this group, and a clear gate failure. Excellent product, no local fit. Revisit it only if Abridge announces an Australian data-residency option and an AU go-to-market. [Read the full Abridge review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-abridge-australia-2026/).

## How to choose: a simple framework

**I'm a solo GP and I want something free or cheap to start. What should I use?** Start with Heidi Health's free tier. Transcription and standard-template notes are unlimited at no cost, so a light-template solo clinician can genuinely run it at $0 — the paywall only bites at 10 advanced "actions" a month. Lyrebird's free Lite tier is also real but capped at 50 actions a month total, which a full-time clinician will exhaust quickly. For a free starting point, Heidi is the better genuine free option.

**I need patient data to stay in Australia for Privacy Act compliance. Which is safest?** Both Australian-built scribes keep data onshore, but Lyrebird Health has the cleanest story: transcription and language-model processing both run on AWS Sydney, with no offshore path for sensitive information. Heidi hosts core consult data onshore too, but reserves the right to process some optional add-on features offshore under its privacy policy. If your requirement is absolute, choose Lyrebird, or use Heidi while avoiding its offshore-processing add-ons. Avoid Nabla (EU/US storage) and Abridge (no published residency) entirely.

**I run a large practice or a hospital. What changes?** Procurement teams usually want a completed independent security certification. Heidi publishes ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2; Lyrebird does not yet, which can be a blocker at the hospital level. If you run Epic at scale, Microsoft Dragon Copilot is the most credentialed option — but it isn't on Microsoft's Australian availability list yet, so watch rather than buy.

**We're already deep in Microsoft and Azure. Should we wait for Dragon Copilot?** If you're a large health service standardised on Microsoft and Epic, it's reasonable to keep Dragon Copilot on the watch list — the Azure-Australia data residency foundation (via Dragon Medical One) is sound. But you can't buy Dragon Copilot in Australia today, so don't pause an active documentation problem waiting for it. Run an Australian-built scribe now and reassess when Microsoft confirms local availability.

**What about overseas tools like Nabla or Abridge?** For Australian clinical work today, skip them. Nabla has no Australian hosting and no AU clinical-software integration. Abridge has no Australian purchase path and publishes no data-hosting location at all. Both are strong products in their home markets; neither answers the residency question an Australian practice must answer.

## What we'd skip and why

The three global names are good software that fail the test that matters here.

- **Microsoft Dragon Copilot** — skip for now, not forever. It is the most capable scribe in this roundup, but it is not on Microsoft's Australian availability list as of June 2026, has no public AU price, and integrates with hospital EHRs rather than Australian primary-care software. A genuine option for large AU hospitals later; not buyable today.
- **Nabla** — skip for Australian clinical use. There is no Australian data-residency option: clinical notes sit in EU Google Cloud, processed through US speech-to-text. No AU pricing, no AU integrations, no AU support. The defining question — where does my patients' data live? — has the wrong answer.
- **Abridge** — skip. There is no way for an Australian practice to buy it, and its trust centre publishes no data-hosting location, so you cannot even confirm where the data would go. Its Epic-first design misses the Best Practice / MedicalDirector software most Australian clinicians use.

The pattern is consistent: the global tools win on funding and polish, and lose on the one criterion that decides this category for Australians.

## Bottom line

For most Australian clinicians, the practical choice is between two Melbourne-built scribes, and that is a good place to be. **Heidi Health is our default recommendation** — it hosts core consult data onshore, files notes natively into Best Practice and MedicalDirector, carries ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certification, and offers a free tier you can prove on real patients before paying. The only asterisk is the offshore-processing clause on a couple of optional add-ons, which matters only for practices with an absolute onshore mandate.

If that clause is a dealbreaker, or if onshore-with-no-exceptions is your single priority, **Lyrebird Health is the runner-up and the cleaner pure-residency story** — fully onshore on AWS Sydney, with native Best Practice and a standout registrar discount. The two are close enough that the honest advice is to trial both: each has a free tier, and a fortnight on your own consults will tell you which note style and integration fit your practice better. The three global names — Dragon Copilot, Nabla and Abridge — are strong products that, for now, an Australian clinician can't sensibly use.

One caveat applies to every tool here: an AI scribe drafts, it does not decide. It does not replace clinical judgement, and the treating clinician remains responsible for the accuracy and content of the medical record. Read and correct every note before it is saved, and confirm your position with your indemnity provider before adopting an ambient scribe. We last reviewed this category on 7 June 2026 and will refresh it as pricing, certifications and Australian availability change — especially if Dragon Copilot launches locally or the global tools add onshore hosting.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which AI medical scribe is best for Australian clinicians?

Heidi Health (our 22/25 Top Pick) for most GPs and allied health — Melbourne-built, onshore core data, native Best Practice and MedicalDirector, and a free tier you can run on real consults. Lyrebird Health (21/25) is the close runner-up with the cleanest pure-onshore data story.

### Are any of these scribes free?

Yes — the two Australian-built ones. Heidi's free tier gives unlimited transcription and standard-template notes (the better genuine free option). Lyrebird's free Lite tier is real but capped at 50 actions a month. The three global tools (Dragon Copilot, Nabla, Abridge) have no free tier.

### Which keeps patient data in Australia?

Both Melbourne-built scribes keep data onshore; Lyrebird has the cleanest story (AWS Sydney end to end, no offshore path). Heidi hosts core consult data onshore but reserves offshore processing for some optional add-ons. Nabla stores in EU/US and Abridge publishes no location — both fail APP 8 for Australian health data.

### Do they bill in AUD?

Lyrebird publishes AUD openly (A$160/user/month annual, ex GST). Heidi renders in local currency at sign-up (anchored to US$150/month). The three global names have no public AU price — Dragon Copilot and Abridge are enterprise quote-only, and Nabla publishes no price in any currency.

### Does an AI scribe replace clinical judgement?

No. An AI scribe drafts; it does not decide. The treating clinician remains responsible for the accuracy and content of the medical record — read and correct every note before saving, and confirm your position with your indemnity provider before adopting one.
