Category verdict

**No single Top Pick.** The right tool depends on the job; our picks by need are below.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

## Why this matters

Automation is where AI stops being a chat window and starts doing actual work — moving a new Xero invoice into a HubSpot deal, enriching a lead and pinging Slack, all without you touching it. The tools have gotten good fast, and most now bundle real AI agents on top of the plumbing.

But for an Australian business, the headline feature isn't the AI. It's where your data lives. Run customer records, invoices and contracts through one of these and you're pushing that data through the vendor's servers — which, for most of the big names, sit in the United States with no Australian option. If you have a client contract or a privacy posture that says data stays onshore, that single fact rules tools in or out before you look at price.

So that's what we weighted heaviest: data residency and self-hosting first, then the metering trap (these tools meter cost very differently, and the wrong one bleeds budget), then whether it actually connects the Australian stack — Xero, MYOB, HubSpot. We tested five. Two cleared our Australian Fit bar — and which of the two is right for you comes down to one question: do you have technical capability (n8n), or do you already live in Microsoft 365 (Power Automate)?

## n8n

**Co-top pick — for technical teams, and the only tool here you can keep entirely onshore.** n8n ships a free, self-hostable Community Edition: stand it up in an Australian region (your own server, or an AU-region cloud host) and your automation data never leaves the country. That's something Zapier and Make structurally cannot offer. Read the [full n8n review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/n8n-review-australia-2026/).

On cost it's also the best value in the category for serious work. Cloud plans start around A$31/mo (EUR 20, billed annually), and crucially it meters per *execution* — one run of a workflow, however many steps — not per task or per action. Multi-step automations that would rack up tasks on Zapier cost you one execution here.

The catch is the catch you'd expect: it asks for some technical capability. Self-hosting means you (or someone you trust) manages a server, updates and backups. The builder is more powerful than the click-to-connect crowd, which is exactly why it scores well on depth — but a non-technical solo operator will feel it.

**Buy it if** you have some technical capability and need data onshore. **Skip it if** you want pure click-to-connect simplicity with AUD billing — n8n bills in EUR. Score: 21/25, Australian Fit 4/5.

## Microsoft Power Automate

**Co-top pick — the easy call if you already live in Microsoft 365.** Standard-connector flows are free with most M365 licences, so a lot of businesses already own this and don't realise it. And because it runs on Azure — including Australian regions — it has a genuine onshore data residency story, which is why it clears our Australian Fit bar. See the [full Power Automate review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/power-automate-review-australia-2026/).

Premium connectors and the heavier AI features cost US$15/user/month (\~A$21/user/mo ex-GST). Watch the per-action metering on Premium flows — high-volume automations add up per step, and it can bite.

The weak spot is the Australian finance stack. If your business runs on MYOB and a grab-bag of non-Microsoft tools, you'll be fighting the platform. Power Automate is happiest when the rest of your world is already Microsoft.

**Buy it if** you're in Microsoft 365 and care about onshore data. **Skip it if** you run MYOB and non-Microsoft tools — that's where it's weakest. Score: 21/25, Australian Fit 4/5.

## Zapier

**The easiest tool here to get live, and it connects more apps than anything else — 9,000+.** On top of that sits a genuinely deep, multi-model AI layer. If breadth of integrations is your priority, nothing matches it. Full detail in the [Zapier review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/zapier-review-australia-2026/).

Two things hold it back for Australian users, and together they cap its Australian Fit at 3/5\. First, cost: entry is A$28.46/mo before GST — a price Zapier quotes in Australian dollars, though it converts from a US list price at the rate on the day — and it climbs steeply as task volume grows. Second, it meters per *task*, which is a real budget trap on high-frequency, multi-step workflows: a single automation firing all day can chew through your allotment fast. And your data sits in AWS US with no self-host and no AU region.

**Buy it if** you run on Xero and/or HubSpot, want the widest app coverage, and your volumes are low-to-moderate or high-value per run. **Skip it if** you need onshore data, predictable cost at scale, or a native MYOB connector. Score: 20/25, Australian Fit 3/5.

## Make

**The most capable no-code automation you can buy cheaply.** One paid plan, priced by credit volume — US$9/mo for 5,000 credits, US$16 for 10,000 (\~A$13–22 ex-GST, billed annually; restructured September 2026, when the old Core/Pro/Teams tiers were merged). It still undercuts Zapier outright while still doing serious multi-step work with native AI agents built in. Read the [full Make review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/make-review-australia-2026/).

The trade-offs land in the same place as Zapier. There's no AU or Azure-AU region and no self-host, so if your data must stay in Australia, Make is out — that's what caps its Australian Fit at 2/5\. There's no native MYOB connector either. And watch the per-credit metering: chatty scenarios burn credits fast, and there's been a 25% overage markup since November 2025.

**Buy it if** you run on Xero and/or HubSpot, want serious multi-step automation cheaply, and don't have a hard onshore-data rule. **Skip it if** your data must stay onshore or you run MYOB — look at n8n self-host or Power Automate instead. Score: 18/25, Australian Fit 2/5.

## Gumloop

**The AI is the real deal — and that's almost the whole story.** Gumloop gives you first-class agents plus the latest OpenAI, Anthropic and Google models inside a no-code builder, with HubSpot, Slack, Salesforce and Google Workspace well covered. The [full Gumloop review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/gumloop-review-australia-2026/) goes deeper.

But it's built for a US SaaS stack, and the Australian gaps are everywhere: no native Xero or MYOB, no AUD billing, no confirmed ABN tax invoice, and onshore data residency locked behind Enterprise self-hosting. Pricing starts at USD $37/mo (\~A$52 ex-GST) for Pro, billed in credits — and that credit metric is the catch. A single enrichment or Claude Sonnet step run over a few hundred list rows can drain a whole month's allotment in one go.

**Buy it if** you run a US-style SaaS stack, bring your own model API key and can budget the credits. **Skip it if** your automations are anchored on Xero/MYOB, or you need AUD, GST and onshore data on a standard plan. Score: 16/25, Australian Fit 2/5.

---

## How to choose

**Start with data residency — it's the gate.** Before price, before features, ask: does this data have to stay in Australia? If a client contract or your privacy posture says yes, your list shrinks to two. n8n self-hosted in an AU region keeps everything onshore; Power Automate runs on Azure Australia regions. Zapier (AWS US), Make (no AU region) and Gumloop (onshore only on Enterprise self-host) can't make that promise on a standard plan — and that single fact is why none of them can clear our Australian Fit bar, no matter how good the rest is.

**Then read the metering label — they're all different, and that's the budget trap.** This is the single most expensive mistake people make. Zapier meters per *task* (each step counts). Make and Gumloop meter in *credits* (chatty AI steps drain them fast — Make added a 25% overage markup in November 2025). Power Automate meters Premium flows per *action*. n8n meters per *execution* (one whole workflow run, however many steps) — which is why it's the cheapest for genuinely multi-step automation. Match the metric to your workflow shape before you commit: a high-frequency, many-step automation that's cheap on n8n can be brutal on per-task billing.

**Then check AU-stack fit.** Xero and HubSpot are well covered across most of these. MYOB is the recurring blind spot — none here ships a strong native MYOB connector, so if MYOB is your ledger, budget for a workaround. AUD billing is rare: only Power Automate bills in a form most AU buyers will recognise; the rest are USD or EUR with GST added at checkout.

**If you need data onshore and have some technical capability:** Go with **n8n** — self-host it in an AU region and you get something the US-hosted tools simply can't offer.

**If you already live in Microsoft 365:** Go with **Power Automate** — it's free for standard flows you may already own, and Azure AU covers residency.

**If you want the widest app coverage and don't have a hard onshore rule:** Go with **Zapier** — 9,000+ integrations and the fastest path to live.

**If you want capable multi-step automation on the cheapest paid plan:** Go with **Make** — just mind the credits and the no-onshore-region limitation.

## Our top picks

**Top pick for technical teams: n8n (21/25, Australian Fit 4/5).** It's the only tool in this roundup you can run entirely onshore — self-host the free Community Edition in an Australian region and your data never leaves the country. It's also the best value for real multi-step work, metering per execution rather than per task, with Cloud plans from around A$31/mo (EUR 20, billed annually). The price of entry is some technical capability — you're managing a server if you self-host — but for an Australian team with an onshore-data requirement and someone technical in the building, nothing else here competes.

**Top pick for Microsoft 365 shops: Microsoft Power Automate (21/25, Australian Fit 4/5).** It ties n8n on total score and matches it on residency via Azure Australia regions, with confirmed AUD billing (A$22.40/user/month + GST) and GST tax invoices — the cleanest commercial setup here for a non-technical Australian buyer. Standard-connector flows are free with most M365 licences, so many businesses already own it. The catch is the Australian finance stack: if you run MYOB and non-Microsoft tools, this is where it struggles. But if your world is already Microsoft, it's the more sensible of the two picks — no server to run.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: Which of these can keep my data in Australia?** A: Two of the five. n8n self-hosted in an Australian region keeps everything onshore, and Power Automate runs on Microsoft's Azure Australia regions. Zapier (AWS US) and Make (no AU region) cannot offer onshore residency on a standard plan, and Gumloop only via Enterprise self-hosting.

**Q: Do any of them bill in AUD with an ABN tax invoice?** A: Native AUD billing is rare. Power Automate prices in a form most AU buyers will recognise (A$22.40/user/month + GST, billed yearly). Zapier, Make and Gumloop bill in USD and n8n in EUR, typically with GST added at checkout — check your invoice for ABN tax-invoice details before relying on it for a claim.

**Q: What's the "metering trap" everyone warns about?** A: These tools charge for usage differently — per task (Zapier), per credit (Make, Gumloop), per action (Power Automate Premium) or per execution (n8n). A workflow that's cheap under one metric can be expensive under another. High-frequency, multi-step automations are cheapest on n8n's per-execution model and most dangerous on per-task or per-credit billing.

**Q: I run my accounts on MYOB — what should I use?** A: None of these ships a strong native MYOB connector — it's the recurring weak spot across the category. You'll likely need a workaround (a middleware connector or a manual bridge). If MYOB is central, factor that effort in regardless of which platform you pick.

**Q: I'm non-technical and just want click-to-connect — which one?** A: Zapier is the easiest to get live and has the widest app coverage, with Make a cheaper alternative. Both bill in USD and host data in the US, so they're fine only if you don't have a hard onshore-data requirement. If you do, you'll need to accept some technical setup with n8n or move into the Microsoft 365 world with Power Automate.
